  • The demand for stainless steel is continuously increasing with the development in offshore industry due to its excellent corrosion resistance characteristics. However, it suffers cavitation-erosion in application of high rotating fluid and the damage accelerates in combination with electrochemical corrosion because of Cl-ion in sea water. This paper investigated the complex damage behavior for 431 stainless steel, that is one of martensite stainless steels, through the hybrid test in sea water. Various experiments were carried out, including potential measurement, anodic/cathodic polarization experiment and Tafel analysis. Surface morphology was observed and damage depth was analyzed by SEM and 3D microscope after each experiment, respectively. The results revealed that more active potential was observed under cavitation condition than static condition due to breakdown of passive film and activation of charge transfer, and that higher corrosion current density was obtained under cavitation condition due to synergistic effect of corrosion and erosion.

  • We investigated the influence of the properties of substrate material on the separation efficiency in microchip electrophoresis. We fabricated the various microchips and studied separation efficiency in microchannels composed of a single material such as quartz, glass, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and polymethylmetha crylate (PMMA), as well as hybrid micro channels composed of different materials. New fabrication process for glass chip was suggested and some treatment is added to improve fabrication process in other chip. Separation efficiency was compared by measuring migration times and bandwidths of EOF and analytes in each microchip. The efficiency is the function of migration time, which is affected by the electroosmotic flow (EOF), and bandwidth of an analyte. EOF is highly dependent upon the characteristics of a microchannel wall surface. Migration time was more reproducible in silica chips than that of PDMS chip and more band broadening was observed in the microchip composed of hybrid material due to non-uniformity of surface charge density at the walls of the channel.

  • The results of numerous studies in III-V semiconductors show that sulfur treatment improves the electrical parameters of III-V compound devices. In this article, we examine the effects of sulfidation of HgCdTe surface on the interfacial characteristics of metal-ZnS-HgCdTe structures. Different from sulfidation in III-V material, S can not be act as an impurity because II-S compounds (ZnS, CdS) generally used as passivant for HgCdTe. Our studies of sulfur-treatment on HgCdTe surface show that sulfur agent forms the S- S, II-S bonds at the surface layer. These bonds are very effective to improve the electrical properties of ZnS layer on HgCdTe by reducing the possibility of native oxides formation. After the sulfidation process, MIS capacitors of HgCdTe show great improvement in electrical properties, such as low density of fixed charge and reduced hystereisis width.

  • A water treatment agent with antimicrobial activity(Ag-Os) was created by exchanging silver ion($Ag^{+}$) on calcined oyster shell powder. The desorption of the exchanged silver ion was negligible, thereby indicating a stable antimicrobial water treatment agent. The sterilization effect of Ag-Os on underwater microorganisms was then investigated. An MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) test result indicated that Ag-Os had an excellent sterilization effect on G-germs, such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Most germs were annihilated with an Ag-Os concentration of 200 ppm and contact time of 60 minutes. The sterilization effect was mainly dependent on the contact time. The zeta potential of the Ag-Os powder adsorbed on sand was measured relative to the concentration of exchanged silver ion. As the concentration of the exchanged silver ion increased, the surface charge density of the anions on the surface of the Ag-Os powder adsorbed on sand also increased. Accordingly, this result indicated that a higher silver ion than ion exchange capacity was present on the particle surface due to adsorption. Consequently, this increased concentration of exchanged silver ion would appear to significantly enhance the sterilization power.

  • Silicon dioxide (SiO$_2$) is widely used as a gate dielectric material for thin film transistors (TFT) and semiconductor devices. In this paper, SiO$_2$ films were grown by APCVD(Atmospheric Pressure chemical vapor deposition) at the high temperature. Experimental investigations were carried out as a function of $O_2$ gas flow ratios from 0 to 200 1pm. This article presents the SiO$_2$ gate dielectric studies in terms of deposition rate, refrative index, FT-IR, C-V for the gate dielectric layer of thin film transistor applications. We also study defect passivation technique for improvement interface or surface properties in thin films. Our passivation technique is Forming Gas Annealing treatment. FGA acts passivation of interface and surface impurity or defects in SiO$_2$ film. We used RTP system for FGA and gained results that reduced surface fixed charge and trap density of midgap value.

  • The pseudocapacitor has a high energy density characteristic because it accumulates charges through a paradic redox reaction. However, due to its strong insulation properties, metal hydroxides should be designed as structural systems optimized for charge transfer to support fast electron transport. Also, Nickel material is weak to heat and is easily deformed when used as a cathode material, so stability must be secured. In this study, nickel hydroxide was produced by electrodeposition to secure the stability of nickel. Electrodeposition is a synthetic method suitable for growing optimized nickel hydroxide because it allows fine control. Nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2) is a metal hydroxide used as a pseudocapacitor anode due to its high capacitance, electrical conductivity and resistance. Therefore, in order to determine how Ni(OH)2 nanosheets are formed and what are the optimization conditions, various measurement methods were used to focus on structural growth of nanosheets produced by electrodeposition.

  • To understand the effects of acclimation schemes on the formation of anode biofilms, different electrical performances are characterized in this study, with the roles of suspended and attached bacteria in single-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The results show that the generation of current in single-chamber MFCs is significantly affected by the development of a biofilm matrix on the anode surface containing abundant immobilized microorganisms. The long-term operation with suspended microorganisms was demonstrated to form a dense biofilm matrix that was able to reduce the activation loss in MFCs. Also, a Pt-coated anode was not favorable for the initial or long-term bacterial attachment due to its high hydrophobicity (contact angle = $124^{\circ}$), which promotes easy detachment of the biofilm from the anode surface. Maximum power ($655.0\;mW/m^2$) was obtained at a current density of $3,358.8\;mA/m^2$ in the MFCs with longer acclimation periods. It was found that a dense biofilm was able to enhance the charge transfer rates due to the complex development of a biofilm matrix anchoring the electrochemically active microorganisms together on the anode surface. Among the major components of the extracellular polymeric substance, carbohydrates ($85.7\;mg/m^2_{anode}$) and proteins ($81.0\;mg/m^2_{anode}$) in the dense anode biofilm accounted for 17 and 19%, respectively, which are greater than those in the sparse anode biofilm.

  • Recently, many state-of-art spectroscopy techniques are used to unravel the mysteries of condensed matters. And numerous heterostructures have provided a new avenue to search for new emergent phenomena. Especially, near the interface, various forms of symmetry-breaking can appear, which induces many novel phenomena. Although these intriguing phenomena can be emerged at the interface, by using conventional measurement techniques, the experimental investigations have been limited due to the buried nature of interface. One of the ways to overcome this limitation is in situ investigation of the layer-by-layer evolution of the electronic structure with increasing of the thickness. Namely, with very thin layer, we can measure the electronic structure strongly affected by the interface effect, but with thick layer, the bulk property becomes strong. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is powerful tool to directly obtain electronic structure, and it is very surface sensitive. Thus, the layer-by-layer evolution of the electronic structure in oxide heterostructure can be investigated by using in situ ARPES. LaNiO3 (LNO) heterostructures have recently attracted much attention due to theoretical predictions for many intriguing quantum phenomena. The theories suggest that, by tuning external parameters such as misfit strain and dimensionality in LNO heterostructure, the latent orders, which is absent in bulk, including charge disproportionation, spin-density-wave order and Mott insulator, could be emerged in LNO heterostructure. Here, we performed in situ ARPES studies on LNO films with varying the misfit strain and thickness. (1) By using LaAlO3 (-1.3%), NdGaO3 (+0.3%), and SrTiO3 (+1.7%) substrates, we could obtain LNO films under compressive strain, nearly strain-free, and tensile strain, respectively. As strain state changes from compressive to tensile, the Ni eg bands are rearranged and cross the Fermi level, which induces a change of Fermi surface (FS) topology. Additionally, two different FS superstructures are observed depending on strain states, which are attributed to signatures of latent charge and spin orderings in LNO films. (2) We also deposited LNO ultrathin films under tensile strain with thickness between 1 and 10 unit-cells. We found that the Fermi surface nesting effect becomes strong in two-dimensions and significantly enhances spin-density-wave order. The further details are discussed more in presentation. • The increased effective impurity due to the pocket ion implantation is well blown to give rise to a reduction of the effective mobility of halo MOSFETs. However, further decrease of the effective mobility can be observed in pocket implanted MOSFETs above the mobility reduction due to the Coulomb impurity scattering and the gate bias dependency of the effective mobility can also differ from the simple model describing the mobility behavior in terms of the effective impurity. Phonon scattering and surface scattering as well as impurity Coulomb scattering are also shown to be effective in the degradation of the carrier mobility of pocket implanted MOSFETs. Using the 1-D regional approximation the effect of the distribution of the inversion charge density along the channel on the drain current is investigated. The inhomogeneous channel charge distribution due to pocket implantation is also shown to contribute to the further reduction of the effective mobility in halo MOSFETs.

  • Mesoporous silica allows proper hydration of an ion exchange membrane under low relative humidity due to its strong hydrophilicity and structural characteristic. A mesoporous silica and Nafion composite membrane shows good proton conductivity under low relative humidity. An understanding of ion-channel formation and proton transfer through an ion-channel network in mesoporous silica and Nafion composite membranes is essential for the development and the optimization of ion exchange membranes. In this study, a mesoporous cellular foam $SiO_2/Nafion$ composite membrane is fabricated, and its proton conductivity and performance are measured. Also, the ion-channel distribution is analyzed by using electrostatic force microscopy to measure the surface charge density of the mesoporous cellular foam $SiO_2/Nafion$ composite membrane. The research reveals a few remarkable results. First, the composite membrane shows excellent proton conductivity and performance under low relative humidity. Second, the composite membrane is observed to form ion-channel-rich and ion-channel-poor region locally.
