A new method of laser remote sensing is proposed, based on sensing the sea surface by a narrow laser beam (2-3cm) and analyzing statistically specular reflections. Construction of the angular dependency of the average density of specks versus the aircraft flight horizontal azimuth allows calculation of both intensity and azimuthal properties of the sea surface spectrum. The paper contains the experimental setup and technique, the field measurement data taken onboard an aircraft and the examples of calculated main statistical parameters of sea waves. Their energy-carrying component velocity is found by the mean velocity of an ensemble of specular points at the random sea surface. The surface wave nonlinearity is shown to affect substantially the statistical characteristics measured: mean numbers of specular areas with th given elevation and given slope, arranged along the line of crossing the sea surface by the scanning laser beam. Experimental measurement of a variance in the number of these areas yields a principal possibility to calculate the correlation function of the sea surface without its preliminary modeling.
In this study, we evaluated the surface roughness of mold and injected parts manufactured by polycarbonate (PC) injection molding. The mold surface was polished to produce six differentiated roughnesses with 12 areas using stones (#800, #1200), sandpapers (#800, #1200), and diamond compounds (#8000, #14000). Injected parts were created using 20mm/s injection speed, 80 bar holding pressure for 5 seconds, and $70^{\circ}C$ cooling water. Injected parts surface roughness (Sa) was measured randomly in 10 of 30 using an interferometer (NewView8000, zygo, USA). In the same way, mold surface was measured randomly 10 times on 12 polished areas. Surface roughness of molds and injected parts were compared, and a regression equation to predict mold surface roughness was proposed for specific injection molding parameters.
In mountainous area with high relief, topography may cause cast shadows due to the blocking of direct solar radiation. Remote sensing images of these landscapes display reduced values of reflectance for shadowed areas compared to non-shadowed areas with similar surface cover characteristics. A variety of approaches are possible, though a common step in various active approaches is first to delineate the shadows using automated algorithm and digital surface model (or digital elevation model). This articles demonstrates a common confusion caused by cast shadows
Surface site and areas of particles are geometrically calculated for the cubic structures to investigate how the surface sites vary with the variation of morphology and particle size. The numbers of surface site and area become smaller when the particles become equi-dimensional shape. The ratios of surface site to surface area are almost constant except the case of anion of fluorite structure. The ratios of the number of surface site to area are almost constant regardless of particle size except the size of up to 5 to 10 times of the unit cell dimension. This quantification method can be used to obtain data related to the surface reaction.
There are variations in the temperature Held due to urban heat island and anthropogenic heating so that regional scale meteorological field is changed. Therefore we simulate and predict the regional climate change according to surface characteristics through regional meteorological model. This study investigates the regional meteorological field by urbanization that influences in local circulation system using CSU-RAMS and simulates dry deposition velocity (V$_{d}$) using PNU/DEM which includes surface characteristics (such as albedo, surface hydrology and rough-ness length etc.) with calculated meteorological field. During the summer, horizontal distributions of V$_{d}$ were simulated using CSU-RAMS and PNU/DEM at Busan metropolitan area. The estimated values of V$_{d}$ were larger in forest and agricultural areas than water areas since ozone with low water solubility is destroyed slowly at wet surface or water.water.
A series of micro- and mesoporous activated carbons were prepared from two kinds of phenolic resin using a metal treated chemical activation methodology. $N_2$-adsorption data were used to characterize the surface properties of the produced activated carbons. Results of the surface properties and pore distribution analysis showed that phenolic resin can be successfully converted to micro- and mesoporous activated carbons with specific surface areas higher than 973 $m^2/g$. Activated carbons with porous structure were produced by controlling the amount of metal chlorides ($CuCl_2$). Pore evolvement depends on the amount of additional metal chloride and precursors used. From the SEM and EDX data, copper contents were shown to be most effected by the incremental addition of metal chloride.
Intensity of solar radiation on a horizontal surface at 12 areas in South Korea was indicated in the last report, Vol. 5, No.3 Journal of the S. A. R. E. K. In this report, area of South Korea was devided into 4 zones in latitude, and calculated intensity of total mean solar radiation on horizontal surface, normal surface to sun rays, and vertical surface of south, north, west and east. For the 4 areas, the following data have been obtained and are indicated in each table. Intensity of total mean solar radiation for Seoul, Gimcheon, Jinju and Jeju$\cdots$Table2 thru Table 5.
The present article discusses the effect of the ratio of bridge surface to total shear surface, number of bridge areas and normal stress on the failure behavior of the planar non-persistent open joints. Totally, 38 models were prepared using plaster and dimensions of $15cm{\times}15cm{\times}15cm$. The bridge area occupied $45cm^2$, $90cm^2$ and $135cm^2$ out of the shear surface. The number of rock bridges increase in fixed area. Two similar samples were prepared on every variation in the rock bridges and tested for direct shear strength under two high and low normal loads. The results indicated that the failure pattern and the failure mechanism is mostly influenced by the ratio of bridge surface to total shear surface and normal stress so that the tensile failure mode change to shear failure mode by increasing in the value of introduced parameters. Furthermore, the shear strength and shear stiffness are closely related to the ratio of bridge surface to total shear surface, number of bridge areas and normal stress.
In order to analyze the surface temperature in accordance with the surface material, surface temperatures between Thermal InfraRed Image (TIRI) and Landsat 8 satellite observed at the commercial area (Gwanghwamun) and residential area (Jungnang) are compared. The surface temperature from TIRI had applied atmospheric correction and compared with that from Landsat 8. The surface temperatures from Landsat 8 at Gwanghwamun and Jungnang are underestimated in comparison with that from TIRI. The difference of surface temperature between the two methods is greater in summer than in winter. When the analysis area was divided into detailed regions, depending on the material and the position of the surface, correlation of surface temperature between TIRI with Landsat 8 is as low as 0.29 (Gwanghwamun) and 0.18 (Jungnang), respectively. The results were caused from the resolution difference between the two methods. While the surface temperatures of each zone from Landsat 8 were observed almost constant, high-resolution TIRI observed relatively precise surface temperatures. When the each area was averaged as one space, correlation of surface temperature between TIRIs and Landsat 8 is more than 0.95. The spatially averaged surface temperature is higher at Jungnang, representing residential areas, than at Gwanghwamun, representing commercial areas. As a result, the observation of high resolution is required in order to observe the precise surface temperature. This is because it appears that the spatial distribution of the various surface temperature in the range of micro-scale according to the conditions of the ground surface.
