Environmental and health concerns over the lead have led to investigation of the alternative Pb-free solders to replace commonly used Pb-Sn solders in microelectronic packaging application. The leading candidates for lead-free solder alloys are presently the near eutectic Sn-Ag-Cu alloys. Therefore, extensive studies on reliability related with the composition have been reported. However, the insufficient drop property of the near eutectic Sn-Ag-Cu alloys has demanded solder compositions of low Ag content. In addition, the solder interconnections in automobile applications like a smart box require significantly improved vibration resistance. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of alloying elements (Ag, Bi, In) on the vibration fatigue strength. The vibration fatigue was conducted in 10~1000Hz frequency and 20Grms. The interface of the as-soldered cross section close to the Cu pad indicated the intermetallic compound ($Cu_6Sn_5$) regardless of solder composition. The type and thickness of IMC was not significantly changed after the vibration test. It indicates that no thermal activities occurred significantly during vibration. Furthermore, as a function of alloying composition, the vibration crack path was investigated with a focus on the IMCs. Vibration crack was initiated from the fillet surface of the heel for QFP parts and from the plating layer of chip parts. Regardless of the solder composition, the crack during a vibration test was propagated as same as that during a thermal fatigue test.
The microstructural changes of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy containing Sc during hot extrusion and post heat treatment were investigated. Two kinds of Al-Sc alloys with different alloying elements (B1, B2) were hot extruded to make T-shape bars at extrusion temperature of $380^{\circ}C$, then the bars were solution treated at $480^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs followed by artificial aging at $120^{\circ}C$ for 24hrs. The interior microstructure of as extruded bar consisted of elongated grains, however, fine equiaxed grains were also observed around surface. The microstructural gradient suggested that different restoration process could proceed during the hot extrusion. For B1 and B2, different grain growth behaviors were found around the surface during the post heat treatment. Rapid grain growth behavior was observed for B1 around the surface, however, it was not observed for B2. Orientation pinning, which was related with the evolution of preferred orientation, and precipitation were thought to be responsible for the rapid grain growth.

Electrophoretic paint (E-paint) was investigated on four different magnesium substrates: as-extruded AZ61 (AZ61), heat-treated AZ61 (AZ61-H), as-extruded TZ61 (TZ61) and heat-treated TZ61 (TZ61-H), to elucidate the effect of heat treatment and alloying elements on the deposition and corrosion resistance of E-paint. It was found that, a rapid increase of voltage, indicating that the deposition of E-paint had started, was observed after an induction time of 0.39 min for AZ61-H, 0.43 min for AZ61, 0.51 min for TZ61-H and 0.58 min for TZ61. The amount of E-paint deposited on the four samples was approximately similar, but the electrical charge used for the deposition process on the heat-treated samples was smaller than that on the as-extruded samples. The current efficiencies of E-paint on AZ samples (AZ61 and AZ61-H) were higher than those of TZ samples (TZ61 and TZ61-H), and on the heat-treated samples were higher than on as-extruded samples. All E-paintings on the four magnesium substrates had an excellent adhesion without any paint detached by tape peel-test. However, many large blisters were formed on the surface of AZ samples, and none, or very small blisters were observed on TZ samples after immersion test in DI-water for 500 h at $40^{\circ}C$. Under salt spray test (SST) conditions, E-paint on AZ samples showed blistering adjacent to scribes, while blistering of E-paint occurred on intact areas of TZ samples. The E-paint on heat-treated samples showed much better corrosion resistance than that on as-extruded samples. The ranking of greater to lesser corrosion resistance of the E-paint on these four different magnesium substrates is indicated by the order: AZ61-H > AZ61 > TZ61-H > TZ61.
In this study, the effect of Nb alloying element on the corrosion fatigue properties of high strength steel is investigated by conducting fatigue experiments under corrosive condition and hydrogen induced condition, potentiodynamic polarization test, tensile test and surface analyses. Nb element is added to enhance the mechanical property of medium carbon steel. This element forms MX-type phases such as carbides and nitrides which are playing an important role in the grain refinement. The grain refinement is one of the effective way to improve mechanical property because both tensile strength and toughness can be improved at the same time. However, MX-type phase precipitates can be a susceptible site to localized corrosion in corrosive environment due to the potential difference between matrix and precipitate. The obtained results showed that Nb-added steel improved corrosion fatigue property by grain refinement. However, it is degraded for hydrogen-induced fatigue property due to Nb, Ti-inclusions acting as a stronger trap.

Effect of applying a DC voltage on the interfacial reaction at the metal to zirconia interface was investigated utilizing an oxygen ionic conductivity of partially stabilized zirconia. The joining of copper rod and zirconia tube was carried out in Ar gas atmosphere at $1000^{\circ}C$. There are two type of the joining. The one is the reaction bond consisting of copper and zirconia was dominated by surface reaction with a undetectable very thin layer. It was found that copper elements were diffused to zirconia side, but that Zr ions were not diffused to copper side. These results mean application of a DC voltage to migrate oxygen to the copper-zirconia interface can oxidize metal at the copper-zirconia interface and the bonding reaction between zirconia and copper oxide may occur. The other is the reaction bonding was dominated by interdiffusion with a very thick interface layer. This result mean application of a DC voltage can reduce zirconia at the interface. The bonding reaction is to be an alloying between Zr and Cu.
This study has been performed to investigate into the internal oxidation characteristics of low carbon steel with respect to the added amount of air in nitrogen-propane atmosphere after gas carburizing for various times at $930^{\circ}C$. The results obtained from the experiment are as follows ; (1) Optical micrographs have shown that the internal oxidation is unlikely to occur in the gas atmosphere without air and that oxidized zone in the outer surface layer is formed in the gas atmosphere with air revealing that the depth of oxidized zone increases with increasing the added amount of air. (2) The formation of internally oxidized zone in the outer surface layer has been found to be inhibited as Ni content increases, i. e, the amount of alloying element increases. (3) The depth of oxidation has been measured to increase with almost parabolically gas carburizing time of up to 6 hours.

It is very important to choose optimal material having good corrosion resistance and capabilities for the part materials such as the automotive exhaust system under a hot salt corrosion atmosphere. Generally, two types of corrosion come into the automotive exhaust system. One is 'Condensate Corrosion', which is occurred by exhaust gas condensate formed at the inner surface of exhaust system heated up during driving, which results in the acid condensate pitting. The other is 'High Temperature Salt Corrosion' occurring from the interaction between the chloride ion coming from salt at the seaside district or snow salt and the outer surface of exhaust system. By the corrosion attack, the main muffler is firstly damaged and the life cycle of an automobile is significantly decreased. It has been investigated that the hot salt corrosion properties of a STS 409L and 436L ferritic stainless steels which are well-known for the materials of the automotive exhaust system. In addition, the corrosion properties of hot dip aluminum coated STS 409L have been compared with uncoated steels. Aluminum coated STS 409L showed a superior corrosion resistance than uncoated STS 409L, and futhermore showed a better corrosion resistance than a STS 436L, which is an expensive ferritic stainless steel having a excellent corrosion resistance caused from more chromium content of an alloying element.
Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT)/$SnO_2$ nano-composite (MSC) for the anode electrode of a Li-ion battery was prepared using a homogeneous precipitation method with $SnCl_2$ precursors in the presence of MWNT. XRD results indicate that when annealed in Ar at $400^{\circ}C$, $Sn_6O_4(OH)_4$ was fully converted to $SnO_2$ phases. TEM observations showed that most of the $SnO_2$ nanoparticles were deposited directly on the outside surface of the MWNT. The electrochemical performance of the MSC electrode showed higher specific capacities than a MWNT and better cycleability than a nano-$SnO_2$ electrode. The electrochemical performance of the MSC electrode improved because the MWNT in the MSC electrode absorbed the mechanical stress induced from a volume change during alloying and de-alloying reactions with lithium, leading to an increase in the electrical conductivity of the composite material.

The aim of this review is to communicate some essential knowledge of the underlying mechanism of the corrosion of structural containment alloys during molten salt reactor operation in the context of prospective online monitoring in future MSR installations. The formation of metal halide species and the progression of their concentration in the molten salt do reflect containment corrosion, tracing the depletion of alloying metals at the alloy salt interface will assure safe conditions during reactor operation. Even though the progress of alloying metal halides concentrations in the molten salt do strongly understate actual corrosion rates, their prospective 1st order kinetics followed by near-linearly increase is attributed to homogeneous matrix corrosion. The service life of the structural containment alloy is derived from homogeneous matrix corrosion and near-surface void formation but less so from intergranular cracking (IGC) and pitting corrosion. Online monitoring of corrosion species is of particular interest for molten chloride systems since besides the expected formation of chromium chloride species CrCl2 and CrCl3, other metal chloride species such as FeCl2, FeCl3, MoCl2, MnCl2 and NiCl2 will form, depending on the selected structural alloy. The metal chloride concentrations should follow, after an incubation period of about 10,000 hours, a linear projection with a positive slope and a steady increase of < 1 ppm per day. During the incubation period, metal concentration show 1st order kinetics and increasing linearly with time1/2. Ideally, a linear increase reflects homogeneous matrix corrosion, while a sharp increase in the metal chloride concentration could set a warning flag for potential material failure within the projected service life, e.g. as result of intergranular cracking or pitting corrosion. Continuous monitoring of metal chloride concentrations can therefore provide direct information about the mechanism of the ongoing corrosion scenario and offer valuable information for a timely warning of prospective material failure.
In this study, Pt/Pd (1.1), PtPd (2:1) and PtPd (3:1) binary catalysts and Pt/Ru/Pd (5:4:1) ternary catalyst were designed. The catalysts were synthesized by impregnation method using $NaBH_4$ as a reducing agent. A good catalyst for methanol oxidation requires low on-set potential, stable durability and low activation energy. In order to investigate the catalytic activity for the methanol oxidation, electrochemical measurements such as cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were peformed in sulfuric acid with/without methanol solution. In order to calculate the activation energy of the reaction, electrochemical measurements were also tested at different temperatures. For investigation of the structural analysis such as particle size and alloying, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analysis were used. In order to identify the role of the Pd and to determine the composition of the surface of the Pt/Pd nanoparticles, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was investigated. The XPS spectra of Pd showed that Pd appears only as a metallic state in the binary catalysts. The chemical states of Pt in PtPd catalysts are both metallic and oxidative. Polarization curves and power density data were obtained by testing the DMFC unit cell performance of PtPd and PtRuPd catalysts. These data showed that Pt/Pd (2:1) and Pt/Ru/Pd (5:4:1) have better performance than Pt and Pt/Ru, respectively.
