  • In the process of grinding a long slender type workpiece, such as ballscrew, by the external cylindrical grinding machine, the cylindricity of the workpiece depends on the distance of rests, the stiffness of supports, the diameter and material of workpiece. Conventionally the process needs to be supported by one or more rests to prevent static deflection and vibration. In this paper, the optimal position of the rests was investigated in order to minimize the cylindricity due to the static deflection, by taking compliance of the workpiece and structure into account. In order to obtain the optimal position of rests, a new modeling that is considering the spring effect of all support elements was established. Since it is so complicated to obtain the optimal position analytically for various conditions due to discontinuity, a genetic algorithm u as utilized.

  • Recently, the structural design code has been changed and every buildings, which have more than three floors or wider area than 1,000m2, should be designed to be able to resist earthquakes. However, most structural engineers are working in some big cities and this physical distance would set a barrier between structural engineers and architects. As a result, most row-rise buildings in small cities are designed and constructed without structural design or the consulting by structural engineers. The purpose of this research is to develop an web-based structural design environment in which structural design and consulting can be performed efficiently through on-line communication without off-line meetings or documents. In addition to the on-line communication, the system has a integrated structural design module which supports all the process of structural design and can increases the productivity of structural design work.

  • In this paper, learning capabilities of two types of Arterial Neural Networks, namely hierarchical neural networks and Generalized Regression Neural Network were used in a two-stage approach to develop a method for generating spatial varying accelerograms from acceleration response spectra and a distance parameter in which generated accelerogram is desired. Data collected from closely spaced arrays of seismographs in SMART-1 array were used to train neural networks. The generated accelerograms from the proposed method can be used for multiple support excitations analysis of structures that their supports undergo different motions during an earthquake.

  • An interaction between Legumes and Rhizobia establishes a symbiotic new organ, the nodule that supports atmospheric nitrogen fIxation. The specific communications between the microbes and legume plants are necessary for both nodulation and nitrogen fixation. Through genetic and biochemical analyses several genes playing pivotal roles in nodulation had been identified to be a receptor kinase like CALVATAl involved signal transduction for development. This emphasizes peptides as signals to be transmitted for a short or long distance transport for nodulation. In addition, a quorum sensing in rhizobia has become a focus as counterpart signal. In an attempt to reveal proteins factors and signaling molecules acting on nodulation, proteome analyses of nodule and the proteins in apoplast upon communication between Legumes and Rhizobia were performed.

  • In oceanic flight routes, HF radio and satellite data links have weather restrictions, long propagation delay and low data throughput. In this paper, we propose oceanic aeronautical communications scheme in the VHF band based on ad-hoc communication. The proposed scheme organizes autonomously a multi-hop network that is divided into multiple local network using aircraft to fly long-distance communication and supports a hybrid type of multiple access, which consists of random access and TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) scheme. In addition, several algorithms to apply spatial reuse of transmission to multi-hop long range communication environments have been proposed. The proposed system proves performance improvement on delay time as an effective solution to communicate end-to-end on the oceanic flight routes and strengthens the reliability of oceanic aeronautical communication.

  • Using bi-direction SOA based Extension system, FTTH can enhance PON system by increasing both the upstream and downstream link budget. This increased link budget can be used to extend the distance, increase the split ratio or both. The bi-direction SOA regenerates signals using all-optical amplification, and is therefore transparent to data rate or protocol. The bi-direction SOA supports legacy as well as future FTTx standards. This is based on SOA's proprietary technology platform for the manufacturing of advanced discrete photonics and photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Because the bi-direction SOA uses the same InP semiconductor technology used in virtually all telecom lasers, it is able to amplify signals at 1310 and 1490 nm, wavelengths not accessible with commercial fiber-amplifier (EDFA) technology. Due to the extremely fast response time of the InP semiconductor optical amplifiers inside, the SOA can accommodate both continuous (downstream) and bursty (upstream) traffic.

  • The dinuclear complex 1 with cooperative hydrogen bonds can be prepared by the metal-directed reaction of Eq. (2). This work shows that the coordinated hydroxyl group trans to the secondary amino group is deprotonated more readily than that trans to the tertiary amino group and acts as the hydrogen-bond accepter. The lattice water molecules in 1 act as bridges between the two mononuclear units through hydrogen bonds. The complex is quite stable as the dimeric form even in various polar solvents. The complex exhibits a weak antiferromagnetic interaction between the metal ions in spite of relatively long Cu$\cdots$Cu distance. This strongly supports the suggestion that the antiferromagnetic behavior is closely related to the cooperative hydrogen bonds.

  • When communication such as light, radio wave, or magnetic field is used underwater, the communication distance is very short, so sound waves are mainly used. However, by combining the strengths of each medium and communicating, stable communication may be possible. Underwater multi-media communication requires a protocol stack that supports it, which is very complex. To this end, this paper proposes a standard protocol stack and modeling technique to enable easy protocol stack modeling for the purpose. In fact, in this paper, a random model was created and analyzed through the proposal of modeling elements and similarity measurement methods, and as a result, it was analyzed that it was very helpful in creating a new model based on a standard model.

  • Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV), is one of well-designed routing protocols in mobile ad hoc networks. It supports the functionality of node mobility modules through multiple control messages to create and maintain paths for data transfer. Even though a number of studies have been conducted to achieve rapid discovery of paths across the network, but few have focused on impact of control messages. This paper proposes a method to adjust the transmission time of messages used in path recovery according to their individual characteristics. Simulation results show the improved performance of the proposed algorithm rather than traditional AODV routing protocol.
