Gold catalysts supported on TiO2 have shown a unique catalytic behavior on CO oxidation, depending on surface effects. Particle size has an influence on the surface activity. To make monodisperse Au nanoparticles, organic capping ligands, such as alkylthiols, were used by a "greener" synthesis method [1,2] and Au nanoparticles were deposited on TiO2. However, organic capping ligands must be removed for high catalytic activities by the Au nanoparticles without changing the Au size [3]. We used UV ozone treatment to decompose thiol ligands. The samples have been characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to examine the surface modification by UV ozone treatment. We show the size distribution of the gold nanoparticles by light scattering analysis and transmission electron microscopy. Au/TiO2 have been prepared using the wetness impregnation method. The catalytic performance of CO oxidation over Au supported on TiO2 under oxidizing reaction conditions (40 Torr CO and 100 Torr O2) were tested. The results show that the catalytic activity depends on particle size and the time of UV ozone exposure, which suggests the role of sulfur bonding in determining the catalytic activity of Au/TiO2 catalysts.

Heteropoly acid(HPW) catalysts supported on three different carriers, an amorphous silica, MCM-41 and MCM-48, with different loadings and calcination temperatures have been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen physorption, infrared spectroscopy, and $^{31}P$ magic angle spinning NMR. From the result of IR and NMR, it was shown that HPW retains the Keggin structure on the supported catalysts. No HPW crystal phase was developed even at HPW loadings as high as 35 wt % on the MCM-41 and 65 wt % MCM-48. Thus, HPW appeared to form finely dispersed species. In the hydrolysis reaction of di, bis, tri-pentaerythritol, HPW/MCM-41, 48 exhibited higher catalytic activity than $HPW/SiO_2$ or HPW.
Carbon nanotube supported molybdenum carbide catalysts were prepared as a function of various preparation conditions and characterized, and their catalytic activities were compared through electrochemical oxidation of methanol. To overcome the low activity of a transition metal catalyst, carbon nanotube was used as a support, and the amount and the kind of precursors, acid treatment method, and carburization temperature were varied for the catalyst preparation. ICP-AES, XRD and TEM were used for the catalyst characterization. Based on the various preparation methods of carbon nanotube supported molybdenum carbide catalysts ($Mo_2C/CNT$), the size and the amount of supported catalysts could be controlled, and their effects on the electrochemical oxidation could be explained.
Esterification of methacrylic acid with ethylene glycol was carried out over Heteropolyacids [HPA: $H_4SiW_{12}O_{40}$ (STA) and $H_3PW_{12}O_{40}$ (PTA)] supported on ZSM-5. For comparison, the same reaction was carried out over unsupported HPA, $H_2SO_4$, $BF_3$ and PTSA. Among the catalysts studied, HPA showed better activity compared to $H_2SO_4$, $BF_3$ and PTSA. Catalytic activity was compared with HPA supported ZSM-5 catalysts. Typical results indicated that 30 wt% PTA supported on ZSM-5 showed nearly the same activity as that of bulk PTA. It was found that the reaction follows first order kinetics with respect to methacrylic acid. The reaction products were identified by $^1H$-NMR and FT-IR.
Heterogeneous metallocene catalysts supported on montmorillonite (MMT), [$Cp_2ZrCl_2$/MMT, $Cp_2ZrCl_2$/MAO/MMT, and $Cp_2ZrCl_2$ + MAO/MMT], were prepared with three different methods of immobilization and tested for ethylene polymerization. The heterogeneous catalysts immobilized on organo clay (30B-MMT) showed the higher metal loading and polymerization activity than those immobilized on natural clay $Na^+-MMT$. These results suggest that the hydroxyl groups of organo clay interlayers react with the MAO and catalyst through the chemical bond. The metallocene catalyst supported directly on MMT showed lower activity for ethylene polymerization compared to the homogeneous systems, while MMT/MAO/$Cp_2ZrCl_2$, catalysts treated with MAO before impregnation, showed a higher activity. The polymers obtained from MMT-supported catalysts have higher melting point, molecular weight and molecular weight distributions than those of homogeneous catalysts. The polymer particles with increasing significant size. Ethylene polymerization over 30B-MMT/MAO/$Cp_2ZrCl_2$ catalyst was also performed varying the process variables to optimize the process conditions.
WGS reaction over Mo2C and ceria based catalysts was investigated to develop an alternative commercial Cu-Zn/Al2O3 catalyst for fuel processor and hydrogen station. The Mo2C catalysts were prepared by a temperature programmed method and the various metal supported cerium oxide catalysts were prepared by an Impregnation method. The catalysts were characterized by the N2 physisorption, Co chemisorption, XRD, TEM and TPR. It was found that Mo2C and 0.2wt% Pt-40wt%, Ni/CeO2 catalysts had higher activity and stability than the Cu-Zn/Al203 above $260^{\circ}C$. Moreover, CO conversion of more than 85% was observed at $280{\sim}300^{\circ}C$. But all catalysts were deactivated during the thermal cycling runs. The results suggest that these catalysts are an attractive candidate for the alternative Cu-Zn/Al2O3 catalyst for fuel processor and hydrogen station applications.
The Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts were prepared from conventional chloride precursors by adsorption or precipitation-deposition methods. Their activities for hydrogenation reactions of cyclohexene and acetophenone were compared with those of commercial catalysts. The Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts obtained from the adsorption procedure reveal higher hydrogenation activity than commercial catalysts and the catalysts prepared by the precipitation-deposition method. Their improved performances are attributed to the decreased metal crystallite sizes of Pt or Pd formed on the active carbon support upon the adsorption of the precursors probably due to the same negative charges of the chloride precursor and the carbon support. Under the preparation conditions studied, the reduction of the supported catalysts using borohydrides in liquid phase is superior to a gas phase reduction by using hydrogen in the viewpoint of particle size, hydrogenation activity and convenience.

The hydrodesulfurization (DBT) were Peformed over NiPtMo catalysts supported on HZSM-5, LaY and ${\gamma}$- $Al_2$O$_3$under high H$_2$ pressure. And the acidities of these catalysts were characterized by using TGA and DSC. The result showed that the order of the acid strength for prepared supports was HZSM -5>LaY>${\gamma}$- A1$_2$O$_3$. For the acid amount we obtained the same result for the acid strength The acid strength and the acid amount mainly depended on the kinds of supports whose acid site were strong or not The activity of the hydrodesulfurization decreased for catalysts which had strong acid sites. The origin of acid site was Bronsted in NH50 and NY catalysts And it was Lewis in NA catalyst The order of desorption activation energy for Pyridine was NH50>NY>NA. And the result was the same for thiophene. The activity of the hydrodesulfurization decreased for catalysts which had strong acid sites. The conversion of DBT over NA catalyst was higher than NH and NY catalysts.
Poly(4-vinylpyridine)-supported $Br{\phi}nsted$ acids (P4VP-HX) were prepared by wet impregnation technique. These supported acids were found as efficient heterogeneous green catalysts for acetylation of alcohol, amine and phenol with different catalytic activities. The wide application of P4VP-HX as reusable solid acid catalyst in organic reactions is possible because of its simple preparation and handling, stability, simple work up procedure.
