The Status of Dietary Supplements Intake in Korean Preschool Children: Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2012

  • Purpose: The use of dietary supplements (DS) has increased in most nations. We investigated the amount of DS intake in the Korean population by analyzing a national survey, to support the preparation of a national institutional strategy regarding DS intake and marketing. Methods: The data of the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (a year between 2010 and 2012) were investigated, analyzing the rate of DS intake, and the characteristics of the intake group and non-intake group in Korean preschool children. Results: The intake rate of DS was 49.0-54.2% (1,313,874-1,491,240) and 19.6-30.3% (250,603-421,922) in children from 1 to 6 years old and in those less than 1 year, respectively, from 2010 to 2012. The highest intake rate was observed in the age group of five. The mean age was significantly higher in the DS intake group than in the non-intake group. Intake of essential nutrients, minerals, and vitamins were also higher in the DS intake group. The level of family income was significantly associated with the intake rate (p<0.001). In children less than 1 year, probiotics accounted for the highest intake of DS. Conclusion: Korean preschool children have high consumption of DS. Therefore, problems may arise from the waste of money purchasing unnecessary DS, and from the overuse of DS in preschoolers who do not require DS intake. We hope these results can be used to produce an appropriate national institutional strategy regarding DS intake and marketing.

  • Objectives: This study was undertaken to evaluate the intake of vitamins and minerals from dietary supplements (DSs) in Korean adults and elderly. Methods: Data for this study was generated from the 2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). We analyzed 4,204 individuals aged 19 years and older (2,579 users and 1,625 non-users). The survey included 24-h recall questions on food and DS intakes, as well as questions on DS use over the past year. The nutrient DSs evaluated were calcium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin C. Total nutrient intakes were obtained by combining nutrient intakes of foods and DSs consumed by each subject. Results: Most micronutrient intakes from food (except for thiamin) in adult users, and the four micronutrient intakes (iron, vitamin A, vitamin B2 and vitamin C) in elderly users, were significantly higher than values obtained in non-users. For total intake of nutrients and DSs, both adult and elderly users had a significantly higher intake than non-users. While proportions below Estimated Average Requirements for all micronutrients by adding respective DSs in users were significantly reduced in adults and elderly as compared to non-users, the proportions of above Tolerable Upper Intake Levels for calcium and vitamin A in adults, and vitamin A in elderly, were significantly increased. In the total subjects examined, consumption of DSs was associated with lower odds ratios of undernutrition of micronutrients, and with higher odds ratios of overnutrition of calcium, iron, and vitamin A, as compared to non-users of DSs. Conclusions: Although DSs consumption by adults and the elderly improves the micronutrient status, it also increases the risk of excessive intake of certain vitamins and minerals.

양이온 리포좀을 이용한 유전자 전달 및 발현서 첨가제의 효과 (The Effects of Supplements on the Plasmid Delivery and Expression in the Transfection Using Cationic Liposomes)

  • Cellular transfections with cationic liposomes are widely empolyed for gene and oligonucleotide transfer in vitro because of their safety and ease of use. However, they still suffer from the low transfection efficiency comparing with viral vectors. Substantial effort shave been focused on increasing transfection efficiency by supplementing the liposome/DNA complexes(lipoplex) with various components. In this work, we tired three kinds of supplements, Poly-L-lysine(PLL), transferrin and a mixture of anionic lipids(PS/PE/PC), to study their effects on gene transfer yield and gene expression efficiency. PLL, a polycationic polymer, enhanced gene transfer yield by 3 times but the gene expression efficiency was increased only by 1.5 times. this result implies that PLL can enhance the transfection efficiency mainly by increasing the rate of outermembrane transport of lipoplex into the cells. On the other hand, transferrin which can facilitate the gene transfer via ligand-receptor interaction gave not only increased gene transfer yield but also enhanced gen expression efficiency by 2.8 times. Transferrin seems to contribute to the escape of plasmid from endosomes through ligand-receptor recycle mechanism. When the cells were treated with a mixture of anionic lipids for 3 hours before the transfection, gene transfer yield was slightly decreased but the gene expression efficiency was enhanced by 1.9 times. This is presumably due to the accelerated liposome-plasmid dissociation by the anionic lipids, and the increased delivery of plasmid to the nucleus. According to these results, it is clear that the supplementation to ameliorate transfection efficiency with cationic liposomes should be contrived in the direction of increasing delivery of plasmid.

Anti-stress Effects of Nelumbo nucifera in ICR Mice

  • The aim of this study is to investigate anti-stress effect of Nelumbo nucifera extract (NNE) inimmobilization - stressed ICR mice. Stress exposure has induced adrenal gland weight, plasma glucose and level in NNE. The experiments were performed with the use of 9 weeks of age male ICR mice (20-25g) at the time of first treatment with NNE. Animals of the normal group were not exposed to any stress and the control group were exposed to stress. The rats of NNE and Diazepam (BZ) supplementary group were orally administered once a day, 100 mg of NNE, 5 mg of BZ extract/kg body weight and they were exposed to stress. Animals were given supplements for 7 days without stress, and then were given supplements for 5 days with restraining. NNE was effective in decreasing scopolamine induced deficit in passive avoidance test and levels of blood corticosterone which was increased by stress in the mice.

A Study on Dietary Patterns, Dietary Behaviors and Life Styles before and after Breast Cancer Surgery

  • The purpose of this study was to compare dietary patterns, dietary behaviors and life styles before and after breast cancer surgery in Korea. The subjects were 220 females who underwent surgery for stage I-III breast cancer at general hospitals. Food intake, eating habits, snacks, eating-out, use of nutritional supplements and healthy foods, and drinking and smoking habits were studied using a questionnaire. SAS program was used for statistical analysis of the data. The results are as follows : 1) Most subjects were housewives aged more than 40 years. 2) After breast cancer surgery, intakes of fruits and vegetables were increased and those of meat, salty and spicy foods were decreased. 3) There was a significant difference in takes of caffeine beverages, snacks, fast foods and instant foods before and after breast cancer surgery. 4) There was a significant difference in meal regularity and skipping breakfast before and after breast cancer surgery. 5) The frequency of eating-out was decreased and low-fat foods, such as Japanese foods, were preferred after breast cancer surgery. 6) Nutritional supplements and natural healthy foods were used more after breast cancer surgery. 7) Most subjects were non-smokers and drank little alcohol and the rate of regular drinking significantly decreased after breast cancer surgery. Therefore, there was a significant difference in dietary patterns and behaviors resulting form breast cancer. Further more, dietary factors may be a contributing factor in the incidence at breast cancer in Korea.

소갈병(消渴病) 기전(機轉)에 관한 이론의 변천 (The Transition of Theory on the Outbreak and Transmission of Wasting-Thirst)

  • Unsatisfied with the modern medicine's treatment of diabetes, patients diagnosed with the disease turn to alternative medicine for treatment. A look at the percentage of people using alternative medicine marked 72.8% in the United States and more than 60% in Korea in 2006. The most preferred form of alternative medicine turned out to be usage of dietary supplements and herbal medicine. Most of the dietary supplements and herbs that diabetic patients use largely originated from their usage in East Asian Traditional Medicine. As Western Medicine made its way into East Asia in late 18th century, excessive efforts were made to translate Western medical terminology into traditional medical terminology equivalents. In the process of doing so, wasting-thirst became a concept equivalent to diabetes. Theories regarding the pathogenic outbreak and transmission of wasting-thirst has been supplemented and progressed according to needs and even showed new tendencies. Profound understanding of wasting-thirst achieved through historical research is expected to lead to proper application of wasting-thirst treatment methods in treating modern diabetes.

Combinations of Natural Products: Opportunities and Dangers

  • The use of medicinal food, food supplements and nutraceuticals is steadily increasing worldwide. These products are derived from a variety of sources of ethnic traditions and new research findings. They are being utilised in a diverse range of preventive and therapeutic situations. Because of this increased interest there is greater use of multiple natural products simultaneously. The use of combinations needs to be treated with circumspection. Mixing may have no unexpected consequences or it may have rather unanticipated beneficial outcomes. Just as likely are deleterious effects from combining the intake of natural products. Recent research has been quite useful in the characterisation of the consequences of some of these combinations and examples will be presented.

건강 관련 요인이 건강기능식품의 이용에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Health-related Factors on the Use of Health Functional Foods)

  • Many Koreans have been interested in health functional foods(HHFs). Use of health functional foods is growing rapidly. This study aims to identify the determinants of HFFs use focusing on health related factors. The subjects were 24,626 samples from Korea Health Panel in 2008. The subjects were divided into two group: under the 20 years old and 20 old and over. The logistic regression model was used to examine influence of health-related factors on use of HFFs for each group. About thirty percent of the subjects have used HFFs. The larger family size, higher education level of parents, more stable economic status and chronic diseases were positively related to use more HFFs in younger 20 years old. Higher education level, more stable economic status, chronic diseases were more likely to use HFFs in 20 years of age and over. Health related factors such as disability, chronic diseases, admission, and physician visit affect the use of HFFs in both groups. We confirmed that health related factors as well as socio-demographic and economic factors affect use of HFFs. In-depth knowledge about relationship between health related factors and HFFs is required.

Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine among Breast Cancer Survivors

  • Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use is prevalent among individuals with cancer, especially breast cancer survivors. This study was conducted among 394 breast cancer survivors in selected regions of Peninsular Malaysia to identify the pattern and factors associated with CAM use. About 51% of the respondents reported CAM use as complementary treatment. Vitamins (47.2%), spiritual activities (33.2%) and other dietary supplements (30.7%) were the most commonly used CAM therapies. Common reasons for CAM use were to increase the body's ability to perform daily activities (70.9%), enhance immune function (58.3%) and improve emotional well-being (31.7%). Users obtained CAM information mainly from friends and family members (62.5%), physicians (25.0%) and mass media (13.9%). Ethnicity and years of education were significantly associated with CAM use. Although no adverse effects of CAM were reported, breast cancer survivors should discuss their CAM use with health professionals to prevent potential adverse effects of these therapies.

Complementary Alternative Medicine Use Amongst Breast Cancer Patients in the Northern Region of Peninsular Malaysia

  • Background: Breast cancer is a common cancer affecting women in Malaysia and the use of complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) has been associated with delays in getting treatment. The aim of the study was to explore the use of CAM and the influencing factors in the Northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study on a convenience sample of 100 Malaysian breast cancer survivors. Findings: The reported use of CAM among the breast cancer survivors was lower than in other studies but the types of CAM used had a similar pattern with nutrition supplements/vitamins being the most common. The factors that positively influenced the use of complimentary/traditional therapy were income and getting information from television or radio. Survivors with access to internet/blogs appear to have lower odds of using complimentary/traditional therapy compared to the respondents who reported no such access. Conclusions: Information transmitted via television and radio appears to have a positive influence on CAM use by breast cancer patients compared to other information sources and it is important to ensure that such information is accurate and impartial.
