The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of a cosolvent-modified supercritical $CO_2\;(scCO_2)$ extraction technique for the production of licorice extracts with high levels of glabridin. The effects of various parameters such as the type and amount of modifiers, extraction temperature ($40{\sim}80^{\circ}C$) and pressure ($10{\sim}50.0\;MPa$) on the extraction efficiency were examined at a fixed flow rate of 1 mL/min. The organic solvent extraction with pure methanol was also conducted for a quantitative comparison with the $scCO_2$ extraction. The recovery of glabridin from licorice was found to be extremely small for pure $scCO_2$. However, the addition of modifiers such as ethanol and acetone to $scCO_2$ resulted in a significant improvement in the recovery of glabridin. The recovery of glabridin was observed to increase with pressure at a constant temperature. Furthermore, the purity of the glabridin obtained from the $scCO_2$ extraction was higher compared with the organic solvent extraction.

The objective of this study was to determine the antioxidant activities of rice bran extracts by three different extraction methods. Rice bran was extracted by solvent extraction, saponification extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction. The antioxidant activities of the rice bran extracts were determined based on ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities, reducing power, and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity. The unsaponifiable matter (USM) extracted by the saponification method showed higher ABTS (671.7 mg Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC)/g) and DPPH (330.7 mg TEAC/g) radical scavenging activities as well as reducing power ($A_{700}=1.14$) than those of the solvent extract (ME) and supercritical fluid extract (SFE). Inhibitory effect on lipid peroxidation was higher in USM (68.7%) and SFE (75.4%) compared to ME (47.8%). USM indicated relatively higher antioxidant activities compared with those of SFE and ME. These results show that the saponification method for extraction of USM from rice bran extracted was the most effective method for enhancement of antioxidant activity. In addition, these extracts from rice bran could be used as functional ingredients in the food industry.

The flexible and superhydrophobic properties of silica aerogels are extremely important material for thermal insulation and oil spill cleanup applications for their long-term use. Flexible silica aerogels were synthesized by using a two-step sol-gel process with precursors, methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) followed by supercritical drying. Silica aerogels were prepared at different molar ratio of methanol to MTMS (M). It was observed that the silica aerogels prepared at M=28 were monolithic but inelastic in nature, however, for M=35, the obtained aerogels were monolithic, elastic in nature with less shrinkage. The microstructural studies were carried out using scanning electron microscopy and surface area measurements. The hydrophobicity was confirmed by Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy and water contact angle measurements. The detailed insight mechanism for flexible nature of silica aerogels and hydrophobic behavior were studied.
The volume change of an ionic liquid and the phase separation behavior of room temperature ionic liquid(RTIL)/organic compound mixture in supercritical carbon dioxide were measured in a high pressure view cell. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][$PF_6$]) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][$BF_4$]) was used as ionic liquid(IL). and methanol and dimethyl carbonate were used as organic compound. For a fixed amount of [bmim][$PF_6$] the lower critical endpoint (LCEP) pressure, where the liquid phase is split, decreased as increasing the amount of organic compound. The LCEP pressure became higher as the water content of ionic liquid was higher. However, for water contents above a certain value, no LCEP was formed. LCEP appeared 1.0 MPa higher for a mixture with [bmim][$BF_4$] than with [bmim][$PF_6$]. There was almost no difference in the K-point pressures for different types of ionic liquid and for different amounts of organic liquid. When the concentration of ionic liquid([bmim][$PF_6$]) (IL/(IL+MeOH)) in the initial liquid mixture was larger than 5.9 mol% at the LCEP of the mixture, the volume of $L_1$ because larger than the volume of $L_2$. When it was smaller, however, the volume became smaller, too. The volume change of ionic liquid in the presence of carbon dioxide decreased as increasing the temperature, while it increased as increasing the pressure. For temperatures between 313.15 to 343.15K at 300 bar, it was about 123~125 % of the original volume.
A new analytical method of cyanobacterial toxins, i, e, microcysins was deveeloped using supercritical fluid extraction(SFE). The microcystins mcluded in the study are sparsely soluble in neat supercritical fluid CO$_2$ However, the microcystins were successfully extracted with a temary mixture(90% CO$_2$,9.0% methanol 1.0% water) at 40$^{\circ}$C and 250 atm. The SFE method developed in this study has several advantages over solid-phase extraction(SPE) sample preparation for the analysis of microcystins. Sample handling steps are minimized thus reducing possible losses of analytes and saving analysis time. No clean-up steps are employed in this SFE method. Althouhgh many methods have been described for microcystim RR and LR, the method using solid-phase extraction with ODS cartridges is the most commonly used. However, the adsorbing power of ODS caridges for microcystins is weak, so we have attempted to use a more polar CN cartridge, to increase the adsorbing power for microcystins. Lyophilized cells(100mg) were wxtracted with 5% (v/v) acetic acid. The extract was centrifuged and then the supernatant was applied to a CN cartridge. The cartridge which contained microcystins was rinsed with 5 ml of water and 5 ml of 0.5 M acetic acid. followed by 5 ml of 5% acetonitrile in water , and were determined by HPLC. Better recoveries and chromatogram were observed than with ODS cartridge.
Phospholipids were recovered from squid viscera residues by ethanol extraction after supercritical carbon dioxide($SCO_2$) extraction and from squid viscera was not processed $SCO_2$ by various organic solvent extraction. $SCO_2$ extraction were performed at $45^{\circ}C$ and 20 MPa for removal of non polar lipid molecules from freeze dried squid viscera sample. Phospholipids were extracted from freeze dried squid viscera sample by chloroform, hexane, methanol, and ethanol and from $SCO_2$extracted squid viscera sample by ethanol. The pH was fixed at 5.7 for all phospholipids extraction conditions. Phospholipid classes were analyzed by HPLC equipped with evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD). Phosphatidyl choline(PC) extracted by ethanol from $SCO_2$ extracted residues was higher than that of extracted by ethanol from squid viscera. But phosphatidyl ethanolamine(PE) and phosphatidic acid(PA) were extracted higher percentage in raw squid viscera. The fatty acid compositions in phospholipids extract by ethanol extract from $SCO_2$ extracted residues were analyzed by gas chromatography(GC). Docosahexanoic acid(DHA) was found in highest percentage in phospholipid extract.
The based-catalyzed depolymerization (BCD) of kraft lignin isolated from black liquor which the chemical pulping of a mixture of various Southeast Asia hardwood chips was carried out in a batch reactor in the presence of different NaOH concentrations with supercritical methanol. The S:G ratio of the kraft lignin determined by pyrolysis-GC/MS analysis turned out roughly 1.4:1 and main products were vanillic acid, syringol and 3-methoxy catechol. The diethyl ether extracts as phenolic monomers from BCD reaction were produced similar yield among different NaOH concentrations. The 21 compounds were identified by GC/MS analysis in all experiments and major products were catechol, 3-methoxycatechol, 4-methylcatechol, syringol and isovanillic acid. However, it had been shown to be different monomer contents depending on the dosage of NaOH. Catechol, 4-methylcatechol and 3-methoxycatechol were shown to be the dominant monomer from BCD reaction using 7.5 and 3.25% of NaOH concentration whereas syringol, isovanillic acid, 3-methoxycatechol and 4-methylcatechol were determined to be the most typical products under the condition of 1.63% NaOH.

This study was conducted to find a solvent, a extraction method and optimized conditions for Artemisia iwayomogi extract. which is effective to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. A. iwayomogi extract by distilled water, ethanol, methanol, hexane and ethyl acetate using ultrasonic, high-pressure and supercritical extraction was investigated for NO inhibitory and DPPH radical scavenging activity. Extract obtained by ethanol and ultrasonic extraction method showed high NO production inhibitory activity, DPPH free radical scavenging activity and yield. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to find a optimized ultrasonic extraction conditions. Results showed that the optimum conditions for the higher yield were ethanol solvent of 45.71% concentration with extraction time and ultrasonic power of 63.33min and 308.84 W, respectively. This condition predicted 15.85% yield, but real yield was $16.40{\pm}0.28%$. The optimum conditions for simultaneous anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity were established as ethanol concentration (80.81%), extraction time (90.00 min) and ultrasonic power (400.00 W). NO production inhibitory and antioxidant activity were $89.77{\pm}1.37%$ and $60.12{\pm}0.39%$, respectively. These results showed similar to the predicted values of 94.54%, 58.03% respectively.
