The use of Supercritical Fluids(SCF) has been proposed for numerous power cycle designs as part of the Generation IV advanced reactor designs, and can provide for higher thermal efficiency. One particular area of interest involves the behavior of SCF during a blowdown or depressurization process. Currently, no data are available in the open literature at supercritical conditions to characterize this phenomenon. A preliminary computational analysis, using a homogeneous equilibrium model when a second phase appears in the process, has shown the complexity of behavior that can occur. Depending on the initial thermodynamic state of the SCF, critical flow phenomena can be characterized in three different ways; the flow can remain in single phase(high temperature), a second phase can appear through vaporization(high pressure low temperature) or condensation(high pressure, intermediate temperature). An experimental facility has been built at the University of Wisconsin to study SCF depressurization through several diameter breaks. The preliminary results obtained show that the experimental data can be predicted with good agreement by the model for all the different initial conditions.

The Rapid Expansion of supercritical fluid Solutions (RESS) process was applied to particles coating. Experiments were conducted in a fluidized bed with an internal nozzle in the center of the reaction tube. Microcapsules (mean particle size : 49$\mu\textrm{m}$) prepared by spray drying method were used as the core particles. Supercritical CO2 solutions of paraffin were expanded through the nozzle in to the bed that was fluidized by air. Surface morphology prepared particles was observed by SEM. For the inspection of particle size change, particle size distributions were measured before and after coating. The releasing behavior of Mg2+ ions inspected by AA.
Fatty alcohol ethers, nonionic surfactants which are used as general purpose emulsifiers were separated by use of water-modified carbon dioxide mobile phase in capillary supercritical fluid chromatography. Much greater peak intensities and improved separation were observed in the chromatogram with on-line modified mobile phase than with pure CO2. A simple method for the preparation of on-line modified mobile phase is also introduced.
Using glycidyl methacrylate-linked poly(dimethylsiloxane), methyl methacrylate was polymerized in supercritical $CO_2$. The effects of $CO_2$ pressure, reaction time, and mixing on the yield, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution (MWD) of the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) products were investigated. The shape, number average particle diameter, and particle size distribution (PSD) of the PMMA were characterized. Between 69 and 483 bar, the yield and molar mass of the PMMA products showed a trend of increasing with increasing $CO_2$ pressure. However, the yield leveled off at around 345 bar and the particle diameter of the PMMA increased until the pressure reached 345 bar and decreased thereafter. With increasing pressure, MWD became more uniform while PSD was unaffected. As the reaction time was extended at 207 bar, the particle diameter of PMMA decreased at $0.48{\pm}0.03%$ AIBN, but increased at 0.25% AIBN. Mixing the reactant mixture increased the PMMA yield by 18.6% and 9.3% at 138 and 207 bar, respectively.
During the international effort to develop the next generation nuclear reactor technologies, many new power cycle concepts were derived to improve efficiency and reduce the capital cost. Among many innovative power cycles, it was identified that the supercritical $CO_2$ (S-$CO_2$) Brayton cycle technology has a big potential to outperform the existing steam cycle and eventually replace it. The S-$CO_2$ cycle achieves high efficiency with very compact size, which is the ultimate advantage for a power cycle to have. The S-$CO_2$ cycle has a great potential not only for the future nuclear applications but also for general heat sources such as coal, natural gas, and concentrated solar. In this paper, a brief introduction to the S-$CO_2$ power cycle technologies will be first provided, and a short summary of current research and development status of the power cycle technology around the world will be followed. Especially the research works performed by KAIST, KAERI and several related research institutions in Korea will be reviewed in more detail, since they have recently developing a strong infrastructure to test these ideas by constructing a demonstration facility while producing many innovative ideas to improve and realize the concept.
