In attempts to closely study the effect of high efficiency, friendly environment HTS(High Temperature Superconducting) cable and SFCL(Superconducting Fault Current Limiters) on power system, several projects were carried out around the world. Promising results have been achieved in terms of cable capacity and reliability. commercial HTS cable and SFCL, however, must not only be only be feasible, but meet practical requirements as well. To facilitate the transition of HTS cable technology from the Lab. to the Real Grid, a New project for applying 22.9kV HTS cables and SFCL to the commercial Power Grid supported by Government has just started in KEPCO. Target of this project is to operate two 22.9kV, 50MVA, 150MVA HTS cables and two 22.9kV 630A, 3000A SFCL in a KEPCO Grid in order to demonstrate its reliability and stable operation. This paper will present the technology for selecting appropriate site and its plan for installation & operating of 22.9kV HTS cables & SFCL in KEPCO Grid.

Temperature dependence of magnetic moment (m-T) and the magnetization (M-H) at 5 K and 20 K of the in situ processed $MgB_2$ bulk pellets with/without carbon (C) doping were examined. The superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$), the superconducting transition width (${\delta}T$) and the critical current density ($J_c$) were estimated for ten test samples taken from the $MgB_2$ bulk pellets. The reliable m-T characteristics associated with the uniform $MgB_2$ formation were obtained for both $MgB_2$ pellets. The $T_cs$ and ${\delta}Ts$ of all test samples of the undoped $MgB_2$ were the same each other as 37.5 K and 1.5 K, respectively. The $T_cs$ and ${\delta}Ts$ of the C-doped $MgB_2$ were 36.5 K and 2.5 K, respectively. Unlike the m-T characteristics, there existed the difference among the M-H curves of the test samples, which might be caused by the microstructure variation. In spite of the slight $T_c$ decrease, the C doping was effective in enhancing the $J_c$ at 5 K.

$REBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-d}$(REBCO) coated conductors(REBCO CCs) have been studied for electric power applications which require high current density wires. As long as the critical transition temperature(Tc) is concerned, REBCO CCs with large $RE^{3+}$ ions have been expected to have better current transport properties than those with smaller $RE^{3+}$ ions. For this reason, REBCO's with large $RE^{3+}$ ions which include GdBCO, NdBCO and SmBCO have been mainly considered as the superconducting layer of CCs. On the other hand, REBCO's with smaller $RE^{3+}$ions are expected to have advantages in the fabrication process of CCs because of the lower melting temperature. But it has not yet been made clear which REBCO is the most suitable for the superconducting layer of CCs. In this study, we investigated the current transport properties of REBCO CCs with small $RE^{3+}$ ion and advantages of using that in the CC fabrication process. Thin films of TmBCO, which has smaller $RE^{3+}$ion than most other $RE^{3+}$ ions, were fabricated on buffered metal substrate as the superconducting layer of CC by PLD process. TmBCO CC shows critical current density (Jc (77 K, sf) = $2.3\;MA/cm^2$) high enough to be utilized for application in electric power devices. Compared with previous experiments using the same PLD system, deposition temperature was approximately $20^{\circ}C$ lower than NdBCO thin films on buffered metal substrates.

$YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Y123) powders for the fabrication of bulk superconductors were synthesized by the powder reaction method using $Y_2O_3$ (99.9% purity), $BaCO_3$ (99.75%) and CuO (99.9%) powders. The raw powders were weighed to the cation ratio of Y:Ba:Cu=1:2:3, mixed and calcined at $880^{\circ}C-930^{\circ}C$ in air with intermediate repeated crushing steps. It was found that the formation of Y123 powder was more sensitive to reaction temperature than reaction time. The calcined Y123 powder and a mixture of (Y123 + 0.25 mole $Y_2O_3$ + 1 wt.% $CeO_2$, $Y_{1.5}Ba_2Cu_3O_x$ (Y1.5)) were used as raw powders for the fabrication of poly-grain or single grain superconductors. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_{c,onset}$) of the sintered Y123 sample was 91 K and the transition width was as large as 11 K, whereas the $T_{c,onset}$ of the melt-grown Y1.5 sample was 90.5 K and the transition width was 3.5 K. The critical current density ($J_c$) at 77 K and 0 T of the sintered Y123 was 700 $A/cm^2$, whereas the $J_c$ of the top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) processed Y1.5 sample was $3.2{\times}10^4\;A/cm^2$. The magnetic flux density (H) at 77 K of the TSMG-processed Y123 and Y1.5 sample showed the 0.53 kG and 2.45 kG, respectively, which are 15% and 71% of the applied magnetic field of 3.5 kG. The high H value of the TSMG-processed Y1.5 sample is attributed to the formation of the larger superconducting grain with fine Y211 dispersion.
The effects of Ta substitution on the superconducting and magnetic properties of the $(Ru_{1-x}Ta_x)Sr_2(Gd_{1.4}Ce_{0.6})Cu_2O_z(0{\leq}x{\leq}0.5)$ system have been investigated. The X-ray diffraction measurements indicate that the Ta ion replaces Ru sites up to x = 0.4. It is found that the Ta substitution for Ru significantly reduces the weak-ferromagnetic component of the field-cooled magnetic susceptibility without an appreciable change of room temperature thermopower at lower Ta doping level below x = 0.2. The resistive transition temperature tends to decrease monotonically from 27 K for the x = 0 sample to 16 K (9 K) for the x = 0.4 (x = 0.5) sample. These results suggest that superconductivity of the $(Ru_{1-x}Ta_x)Sr_2(Gd_{1.4}Ce_{0.6})Cu_2O_z$ compound is not significantly affected by the magnetic state of the Ru sublattice. The experimental results are discussed in connection with previous reports on the effects of Nb substitution.
We have investigated the effect of thickness of the MgB2 film on the grain growth direction as well as on their superconducting properties. $MgB_2$ films of various thicknesses were fabricated on c-cut $Al_2O_3$ substrates at a temperature of $540^{\circ}C$ by using hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD) technique. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) was found to increase with increase in the thickness of the $MgB_2$ film. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the orientation of grains changed from c-axis to a-axis upon increasing the thickness of the $MgB_2$ film from 0.6 to 2.0 ${\mu}m$. $MgB_2$ grains of various orientations were observed in the microstructures of the films examined by scanning electron microscopy. It is observed that at high magnetic fields the 2.0-${\mu}m$-thick film exhibit considerably larger critical current density ($J_c$) as compared to 0.6-${\mu}m$-thick film. The results are discussed in terms of an intrinsic-pinning in $MgB_2$ similarly as intrinsic-pinning occurring in high-Tc cuprate superconductors with layered structure.
Spin polarized tunneling studies were carried out with Al-Ga bilayer as a spin detector, by Meservey-Tedrow technique. The superconductor (SC)/Insulator (I)/Ferromagnet (FM) tunnel junctions were provided by ultra high vacuum molecular beam epitaxy (UHV-MBE) technique. The analysis of interfacial properties in the Al-Ga bilayer was also carried out by Auger electron spectroscopy. It was observed that the superconducting transition temperature and energy gap were raised in comparison with that of bulk Ga and pure ultrathin Al films. Current studies clearly show how one can modify the material properties at the interface just with a few monolayers.
High-Tc superconductor thick films of YBa2Cu$\chi$O7-y (X=3, 3.5, 4) of which thickness varies from 100 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 200 $\mu\textrm{m}$ were successfully prepared by plasma spraying method, and the characteristics of thick film depending on copper content and heat treatment conditions were investigated. Regardless of heat-treated temperature, the specimens with X=3 were composed of YBa2Cu$\chi$O7-y, Y2BaCuO5 and BaCuO3 phases. The specimens with X=4, however, were composed of YBa2Cu$\chi$O7-y phase at all heat treatment conditions. The specimens with X=4 composition showed the best superconducting characteristics after heat treatment at 925$^{\circ}C$, and the superconducting transition temperature with zero resistivity (Tc,zero) was 87K. The thick film lost superconductivity when the specimens were heat-treated at 950$^{\circ}C$ because of interdiffusion between superconductor elements and bond coating elements and Y2BaCuO5 phase was found was found to be main phase at the interface.
We performed Raman spectroscopy on two different over-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (BSCCO), of which superconducting transition temperatures are 89 K and 77 K. Line-shape analysis of the Raman-spectrum was done, focused on B1g bond buckling mode which have drawn a lot of attention, since photoemission studies showed an evidence for strong coupling between the mode and electron. The line-shapes show asymmetry and are well fitted by the Fano line-shape formula. Remarkably, we found that the peak line-widths from B1g bond buckling mode in BSCCO show much broader than those in YBa2Cu3O7-x. The broad line width can be attributed to the superstructure modulation of BSCCO. Our results imply that B1g bond buckling mode may have close relation to the origin of superconductivity or to boosting the superconducting transition temperature in BSCCO.
The effect of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) addition on the superconducting property of Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ ((Bi, Pb)-2223) polycrystalline samples was studied. LSMO (0.3 wt.% to 2.0 wt.%) added (Bi, Pb)-2223 samples were prepared by using a solid-state reaction method. The XRD analyses show that as the LSMO addition increases, the volume fraction of the Bi-2223 phase is gradually decreased. The critical temperature (Tc) exhibits a gradual decrease with a single transition as the LSMO amount increases up to 1.0 wt.%, but a further addition of LSMO induces an abrupt decrease of Tc with a dual transition. The analyses on the local structure of the CuO2 plane from the X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements showed that for the samples with low concentration of LSMO up to 1.0 wt.%, the Cu-O bond length and the CuO2 plane ordering do not degrade from the values of pure (Bi, Pb)-2223, while they get worsen with a further increase of LSMO addition. These results open up the possibility of LSMO as artificial pinning centers of the (Bi, Pb)-2223 system for power application.
