Two kinds of multifilament Bi-2223/Ag tapes, which are different in the precursor calcination temperatures, were heat treated for different time (12, 20, 30, 50, 70, or 100 h) firstly to obtain varied B2223 contents, and then followed by the same pressing and sintering cycles. The relation of the 2223 phase contents after the first sintering and the transport property of the fully processed tapes was studied. The results show that 75-80% 2223 phase formed in tapes before the first cold pressing is beneficial to get a high $I_{c}$ in the final tapes. Compensating the total heat treatment time of the tapes first sintered for 20 h to the same length as that first sintered for 50 h in the subsequent sintering stages, different $I_{c}$ enhancements were observed in these two tapes. No improvement on $I_{c}$ was found in the tape made from the powder calcined at higher temperature, whereas for the tape prepared with the lower temperature calcined powder, the $I_{c}$ was increased to the same level as that first sintered for 50 h. The 2223 contents before the intermediate mechanical work is related to the residual reactants, especially to the liquid phase, which is of vital importance to the phase conversion and healing microcracks, meanwhile, to the size and distribution of the non-superconducting secondary phases. The lower temperature calcined powder resulted in slow formation of 2223 phase, but also provided more reactants and liquid phase for the further phase conversion, as a consequence, for the Improvement of $I_{c}$. c/.
A multifilamentary Bi-2223 HTS tape for superconducting power applications was studied through the fabrication of 250-meter long tapes by the PIT(powder in tube) process. To fabricate continuous long wire, a drawing machine, a two-drum bull block and a rolled tape winding machine were developed. Especially, 250-meter long tapes were heat treated in the shape of pancake coil to reduce the heat affect zone and to achieve the high critical current. Engineering critical current density was improved through both the enhancements of critical current density by control of thermal process and the increase of filling factor by using thin Ag alloy sheath tubes less than 1.5 mm in thickness. We have made successfully 250-meter long 37 filamentary tapes with high filling factor up to 31 % employing the modified drawing and rolling technique. The critical current of 250-meter long tapes with pancake coil type was measured by transport method at self-field up to 250 gauss of center field. The measured values, based on the transport critical current at self-field, $I_{c}$ -B characteristics and magnetic field analysis, are 34 A of I$_{c}$ and 4.0 $kA/\textrm{cm}^2$ of $J_{e}$ at 250 m, 77 K, and 0 T. We also have achieved the 56 A of I$_{c}$ and 7.0 $0 kA/\textrm{cm}^2$ of$ J_{e}$ in short tapes at 77K, self-field, and 1$mutextrm{V}$/cm.
In this study we investigated ac transport current losses in the face to face stack for the anti-parallel current flow, and compared the electromagnetic properties with those of the single SC tape as well as those of the same stack for the parallel current path. The gap between the SC tapes in the stack varied in order to verify the electromagnetic influence of the neighbors when current flows in opposite direction, and the model was implemented in the finite element method program by the commercial software, COMSOL Multiphysics 4.2a. Conclusively speaking, the loss was remarkably decreased for the anti-parallel current case, which is attributed the magnetic flux compensation between the SC layers due to the opposite direction of the current flows. As the gap between SC tapes was increased, the loss mitigation became less effective. Besides, the current density distribution is very flat cross the sample width for the narrower gap case, which is believed to be benefit for the power electric system. These results are all in good agreement with those predicted theoretically for an infinite bifilar stack.

This paper presents the analysis and experiment results on the electrical and thermal characteristics of metal insulation (MI) REBCO racetrack coil, which was wound with stainless steel (SS) tape between turn-to-turn layers, under rotating magnetic field and conduction cooling system. Although the field windings of superconducting rotating machine are designed to operate on a direct current, they may be subjected to external magnetic field due to the unsynchronized armature windings during electrical or mechanical load fluctuations. The field windings show the voltage and magnetic field fluctuations and the critical current reduction when they are exposed to an external magnetic field. Moreover, the cryogenic cooling conditions are also identified as the factors that affect the electrical and thermal characteristics of the HTS coil because the characteristic resistance changes according to the cryogenic cooling conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effect of external magnetic field on the electrical and thermal characteristics of MI-SS racetrack coil for further development reliable HTS field windings of superconducting rotating machine. First, the major components of the experiment test (i.e., HTS racetrack coil construction, armature winding of 75 kW class induction motor, and conduction cooling system) were fabricated and assembled. Then, the MI racetrack coil was performed under liquid nitrogen bath and conduction cooling conditions to estimate the key parameters (i.e., critical current, time constant, and characteristic resistance) for the test coil in the steady state operation. Further, the test coil was charged to the target value under conduction cooling of 35 K then exposed to the rotating magnetic field, which was generated by three phrase armature windings of 75 kW class induction motor, to investigate the electrical and thermal characteristics during the transient state.
The superconducting properties of high temperature superconducting (HTS) GdBCO coated conductor (CC) tape (Ag/GdBCO/Buffer-layers/Stainless Steel) were investigated, specifically a series of samples prepared by vacuum heat treatment (200℃ to 600℃), using a Quantum Design PPMS-14. The critical current density Jc value was obtained by applying the modified Bean model to the irreversible magnetization ∆Mirr(H) data which was estimated from the magnetization M(H) loop. The reduction rates of lnJc and Tc values according to the increase of the vacuum annealing temperature Tan were d(lnJc)/dTan = - 0.016 A/(cm2∙℃) and dTc/dTan = - 0.24, respectively. We examined the effect of recovery temperature Tre (475℃ to 700℃) and recovery duration time t (0.5 h to 24 h) on the restoration of previously completely lost superconductivity in samples that subsequently received heat treatment in an O2 gas flow space. All samples were fully restored to superconductivity by heat treatment in an O2 gas flow space. The recovery temperatures Tre (475℃ to 700℃) and recovery duration times t (0.5 h to 24 h) were both independent of the superconductivity recovery characteristics.
This study presents the experiment and simulation results on the magnetic field response and electrical stability behaviors of no-insulation (NI) and metal insulation with stainless steel tape (MI-SS) which wound in form of racetrack type coils. First of all, the structural design of the racetrack type bobbin was shown along with its parameters. Then, the current-voltage tests were carried out to measure the critical current of both test coils. Also, the sudden discharging and charging tests were performed in the steady state to estimate the decay field time and magnetic field response, respectively. Finally, the overcurrent tests were conducted in the transient state to investigate the electrical stability of these test coils. Based on the experimental results, the contact surface resistances were calculated and applied to the field coils (FCs) of 10-MW-class second generation high temperature superconducting generator (2G HTSG) used in wind offshore environment. The charging delay time and electrical stability for NI and MI-SS HTS FCs of 10-MW-class 2G HTSG are analyzed by the equivalent circuit model and the key parameters which were obtained from the electromagnetic finite element analysis results.

When applying superconducting wire to power machines, an investigation needs to be carried out on the characteristics of wire phase changes in connection with the insulating layer. This study examined trends in the increase of the wire's resistance and the characteristics of its recovery from quenching by a current-applied cycle at temperatures of 90 K, 180 K, and 250 K. The procedure was conducted based on the thickness and presence (or absence) of the insulating wire layers. To achieve this, YBCO thin-film wires with the same critical temperatures were prepared with copper and stainless steel stabilizing layers. At levels (-one, three, and five-), with superior performance, polyimide pressure-sensitive adhesive tape was attached to the wires at a very low temperature. The eight prepared test samples were wound around the linear frames. The wire's voltage and current created from the phase change characteristics were measured at the wire's prescribed temperature, using the four-point probe method. The wire's resistance and recovery characteristics were examined for each cycle at temperatures of 90 K, 180 K, and 250 K.
HTS tape is developed for the purpose of being applied to the power cable, motor and generator, etc. The resistance of conventional power cables is not changed a lot by over current condition. But HTS(High temperature superconductor)power cable has some different properties. The impedance of superconductor is changed due to the magnitude of current, temperature, and magnetic field. And the characteristics analysis of HTS power cable under many kind of fault conditions are important to apply real system. In addition the magnitude of over current is 10 times larger than rated current. In this paper, the characteristics of HTS power cable are analyzed when over current flows. Model cable used 2G wires was made and experimented. The results will be helpful to manufacture real HTS power cable.

The value of I$_c$(critical current) in HTS (High Temperature Superconductor) tape has a great influence on B${\bot}$(vertical field). Therefore, in shape design of field coil for the HTSG(High Temperature Superconducting Generator), a method to reduce the B${\bot}$ should be considered in order to maintain the stability and substantial improvement on the performance. On the basis of the magnetic field analysis, this paper deals with various field coil shape according to the iron plate to obtain small B${\bot}$ by using Biot-Savart's law, image method and 2D FEA(2 Dimensional Finite Element Analysis) considering the stress condition of HTS. Moreover, the analysis is verified by comparison with experimental results. And also this paper presents the advanced model by using 3D FEA, in which flux density at armature is calculated in 5kVA class HTSG.
This paper reviews recent progress in research and development (R&D) of reactive co-evaporation for high performance REBCO coated conductors in Korea. Two types of reactive co-evaporation methods were developed for the deposition of SmBCO and GdBCO superconducting layers respectively on the IBAD (Ion Beam Assisted Deposition)-MgO template in the Korean coated conductor project. Batch type reactive co-evaporation equipment and its processing were developed for SmBCO coated conductors at Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) in conjunction with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and a very high critical current exceeding 1,000 A/cm at 77 K in the self field was achieved through the optimization of deposition parameters. Reel-to-reel type reactive co-evaporation processing with a high conversion rate was also developed, while long length GdBCO coated conductors have been routinely produced by SuNAM Co. The minimum critical current of 422 A/cm-w at 77 K in self field was confirmed for 1 km-long GdBCO tape.
