The effect of precursor powder on the properties of BSCCO 2223 Ag-sheathed tapes

  • The BSCCO 2223 Ag-sheathed tapes were prepared with spray dried precursor powders, which are of different starting condition. The J$_c$ in the short tapes varied from 24 kA/ cm$^2$ to 47 kA/ cm$^2$ at 77K and 0T. The largely improvement of J$_c$ in certain tape, which characterized with the large textured BSCCO 2223 grains, homogeneity of reactant and fewer tracks of second phases in final superconducting matrixes, could be due to optimization in the precursor powder.

  • We evaluated the degree of texture through depth of the superconductor core of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O(BSCCO) superconductor tape. The degree of texture was characterized by pole figure analysis, indicating that the degree of texture varied significantly with depth of the superconductor core. It was observed that the degree of texture was higher near the interface than inside the superconducting core. Based on the result of degree of texture, the region near the interface is thought to carry significant current compared to that inside the core.

  • A 1 MV A single phase high temperature superconducting (HTS) transformer was manufactured. In order to reduce AC loss generated in the HTS winding, winding was concentrically arranged. Operation temperature is set at 65K to increase the critical current and reduce the amount of HTS tape usage and the volume. The cryogenic system which consists of main cryostat with the windings and secondary cryostat with 2 GM coolers and cryopump on top and heat exchanger inside is also designed and the cooling performance is simulated with Fluent. Temperature distribution of the windings is investigated whether the windings are kept under designed operation temperature.

  • This paper describes the construction and test results of a 10kVA single phase HTS transformer. Double pancake windings with BSCCO-2223 HTS tape and G10-FRP cryostat with room temperature bore are used in the transformer. Two double pancake windings are connected in series to provide 188 turns and other two double pancake windings are connected in parallel to conduct the secondary current of 45.4[A]. Coefficients of the constructed transformer are obtained using the fundamental teats of the transformer. According to the test results, larger leakage reactance than expected is observed due to the bulky core which surrounds the sryostat.

  • Evaluation of the mechanical properties of Bi-2223/Ag HTS tapes was carried out by the tension and bending tests. Most of the Bi-2223/Ag tapes retained critical current up to 10 kgf/mm$_2$ axial tension stress, and 0.2% tension strain at room temperature. Applied tension strain exceeding 0.3% in superconducting tapes at 77 K leaded to rapid degradation of the critical current. It was observed that the more filaments, the better axial tension property at 77 K, self-field The influence of bending strain on critical current degradation was revealed to be less sensitive for Bi-2223/Ag HTS tapes with a more number of filaments and higher silver ratio.

Influence of end-joint methods on magnetization loss in striated helical conductors

  • To reduce the magnetization loss of a coated conductor, the striation and the transposition have to be accomplished for magnetic decoupling. The loss reduction effect in incomplete as well as complete striated YBCO CCs was reported in previous research. At the case of the incomplete striated sample, the end region of the sample is non-striated. So, it is not jointed with each other. In power applications, the joint is needed because current leads must be connected with HTS coils. In this research, the influence of end-joint methods with copper and superconducting joint on magnetization loss in striated YBCO CC and spiral winding samples are presented and compared with non-striated measured result.

  • AC loss is an important issue in the design of high-T$_{c}$ superconducting power cables which consist of a number of Bi-2223 tapes wound on a former. In the cables, the tapes have different critical currents intrinsically. And they are electrically connected to each other and current leads. These make loss measurements considerably complex, especially for short samples of laboratory size. So special cautions are required in the positioning of voltage leads for measuring the true loss voltage. In this work we have prepared a conductor composed of three Bi-2223 tapes with different critical currents. The ac loss characteristics in the conductor have experimentally investigated. The loss tests indicate that the ac loss is dependent on arrangements of voltage leads but not on their contact positions. The measured losses in the conductor also agree well with the sum of the transport losses measured in each Bi-2223 tape.e.
