The substantial improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be achieved with small-size samples or low-field MRI system by high-temperature superconducting(HTS) RF coil. The typical HTS RF coil made of HTS thin film is expensive and is limited the coil geometry to planar surface coil. In this study, commercial Bi-2223 HTS tapes was used as RF coil for a 0.35T permanent MRI system. It has advantages of both much lower cost and easier fabrication over HTS thin film coil. SNR gain of the image obtained from the HTS RF coil over a conventional Cu RF coil at room temperature was about 2.4-fold and 1.9-fold using the spin echo pulse sequence and gradient echo pulse sequence respectively.
The critical current degradation behaviors of multifilamentary Bi-2223 superconducting tapes under pressurized liquid nitrogen were investigated using a r-shaped sample holder which gives a series of bending strains to tape. Three kinds of externally-reinforced Bi-2223 tapes with different hermeticity were used as samples. The tape with the thicker reinforcement layer had a better bending strain tolerance of $I_c$, but when the bending strain was calculated at the outermost filament, the $I_c$ degradation behavior became identical. For all samples, $I_{c0}$ decreased with the increase of applied pressure, but the $I_c$ degradation behavior with bending strain at each pressure level was similar. Furthermore, after depressurization from 1 MPa to atmospheric pressure, $I_c$ was completely recovered to its initial values. When the samples were warmed up to room temperature after pressurization tests, the ballooning damage occurred at lower bending strain regions. The region where ballooning was observed was identical to the one where the significant $I_c$ degradation occurred.
To be applied to electrical equipment HTSC tapes have to endure external stress and so on. The critical current density has been shown depending on the mechanical properties, strain and bending stress. AC loss reduction is primary concern in the development of such high-efficiency equipment. AC losses in Bi-2223 silver-sheathed tapes, both single and multi-filamentary, were investigated by means of AC magnetization techniques. The results were compared with the hysteresis loss equation based on Bean model and the eddy current loss equation. The AC loss of the mono-filamentary tape was the hysteresis. On the contrary, the AC loss of the multi-filamentary tape was substantially dominated by the eddy current loss in the Ag matrix.

Bi-2223 superconducting wires with 55 filaments were fabricated by stacking, drawing process with different heat-treatment histories. Two kinds of powders were prepared. One was pre-annealed at 760-820 $^{\circ}C$ and low oxygen partial pressure, and the other was only calcined state. Before rolling process, round wires were pre-annealed at 760 -820 $^{\circ}C$ and in a low oxygen partial pressure. We confirmed that pre-annealing step was to transform Bi-2212 orthorhombic structure from Bi-2212 tetragonal structure and to reduce the formation of second phases at superconducting wire. However Bi-2223 phases were formed at higher pre-annealing temperature. Bi-2223 conductor was needed frequently annealing at low temperature because pre-annealing at precursor powder brought about decrease in workability. We could achieve highest Je of 6500 A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at the tape using Bi-2212 orthorhombic phase by introduced slightly overheating at the 1st sintering process.
In this paper, the prototype of the HTS motor with an on-board cryocooler, is fabricated and tested. The overall system is composed of the stator with conventional copper winding, the rotor with superconductor, and the rotating cryocooler designed from the on-board concept. The rotor is fabricated as the race-track coil with 2G, YBCO tape and contacts with the on-board cryocooler while being rotated together. An inline-type pulse tube refrigerator is used as the on-board cryocooler. The cryocooler is fabricated from optimal process to satisfy the structure and thermal stability of the on-board system. Each component is integrated according to carefully defined sequence. Specially, a combining method of torque tubes is an important part for sustaining stability of the rotor and the cryocooler. In the rotating test, the HTS motor is successfully operated with 240 rpm of rotating speed when 75 A current is supplied to the superconducting rotor. In this paper, potential problems of the HTS motor system using the on-board cryocooler are proposed and solved, and realistic possibility of this concept is also confirmed.
A lot of efforts have been focused on the optimization of PIT parameters for Bi-2223/Ag wire. Bi-2223 superconducting wires with 55 filaments were fabricated by stacking, drawing process. Before rolling process, round wires were pre -annealed at 760 - 820 $^{\circ}C$ and low oxygen partial pressure. We confirmed that pre-annealing step was to transform Bi-2212 orthorhombic structure from Bi-2212 tetragonal structure and to reduce the formation of second phases. However Bi-2223 phases also were formed at higher than 76$0^{\circ}C$ of pre-annealing temperature. The engineering critical current densities (Je) of Bi-22231Ag tapes were sintered at low oxygen partial pressure were higher than t hat of the wires sintered at air. We could achieve 6500 A/${cm}^2$ of Je for the tape that was initially kept at slightly higher temperature than that of normal heat treatment.
Persistent current switch (PCS) system in NMR, MRI, MAGLEV and SMES has many advantages, such as uniformity and durability of magnetic field and reducing a thermal loss, which enable many superconducting application to operate effectively. This paper deals with fabrication and test of heater trigger persistent current switch using coated conductor (CC) which has high n-index, critical current independency from external magnetic field and adaptable selectivity of stabilizer. PCS system consists of magnet power supply for energizing current to a magnet, heater, switch and magnet using coated conductor tape. Finite element method (FEM) is used to simulate thermal quench (switching) characteristic and design heater trigger. With FEM simulation, optimal length of heater is calculated by temperature and time analysis. Fabrication of PCS system and test of heater trigger characteristic were performed and compared with simulation result. This paper would be the foundation of researches of superconducting switching application.
This paper describes a model flux pump experiment recently performed at the MIT Francis Bitter Magnet Laboratory. The results of the model flux pump will be used in the development of a prototype flux pump that will be couple to a high-temperature superconductor (HTS) insert coil of a high-field NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) magnet, Such an HTS insert is unlikely to operate in persistent model because of the conductors low index(n) The flux pump can compensate fro field decay in the HTS insert coil and make the insert operate effectively in persistent mode . The flux pump, comprised essentially of a transformer an two switches. all made of superconductor, transfers into the insert coil a fraction of a magnetic energy that is first introduced in the secondary circuit of the transformer by a current supplied to the primary circuit. A model flux pump has been designed. fabricated, and operated to demonstrate that a flux pump can indeed supply a small metered current into a load superconducting magnet. A current increment in the range of microamperes has been measured in the magnet after each pumping action. The superconducting model flux pump is made of Nb$_3$ Sn tape, The pump is placed in a gaseous environment above the liquid helium level to keep its heat dissipation from directly discharged in the liquid: the effluent helium vapor maintains the thermal stability of the flux pump.
For practical applications, the evaluation of reliability or endurance of HTS conductors is necessary. The mechanical properties and the critical current, $I_c$, of multifilamentary Bi-2223 superconducting tapes, externally reinforced with stainless steel foils, subjected to high cycle fatigue loading in the longitudinal direction were investigated at 77K. The S-N curves were obtained and its transport property was evaluated with the increase of repeated cycles at different stress amplitudes. The effect of the stress ratio, R, on the $I_c$ degradation behavior under fatigue loading was also examined considering the practical application situation of HTS tapes. Microstructure observation was conducted in order to understand the L degradation mechanism in fatigued Bi-2223 tapes.

When high temperature superconducting tapes is fabricated using the PIT (Powder In Tube) method, the length of HTS tapes is increased more than 500 ${\sim}$ 1,000 times of initial powder packed billet. On mechanical processing, heterogeneous properties between the ceramic superconducting core and Ag/Ag alloy sheath occur the non-uniformity deformation as like sausaging that deteriorate the critical current properties of HTS tapes. In this study, we investigated the workability of Bi-2223/Ag/Ag alloy sheath tapes fabricated by the PIT method involving a number of different mechanical processes, multi drawing and rolling. In order to obtain the high critical current density and high uniformity of Bi-2223/Ag sheath tapes, the influences of powder packing density, drawing die angle and rolling parameters were studied. We found that the roll diameter is an important variable in the rolling process, as critical current of tapes rolled using 250 mm rolls was higher than that using 150 mm rolls.
