This paper presents the construction and test results of an HTS induction motor. End rings and short bars were made of HTS tapes, To increase the efficiency and starting torque, HTS tapes can be used as the rotor bars. Because large current is induced in the rotor circuit, HTS tapes quench and high starting torque can be obtained. As the speed of rotor builds up. HTS tapes which are used as short bars become superconducting state again. After the HTS tapes recover from quench, resistance of the rotor circuit is nearly zero. In that case, power loss in rotor circuit is eliminated. Stator of the conventional induction motor was used as the stator of the HTS motor. Rated capacity of the conventional motor was 0.75 kW. Performances of the HTS induction motor were compared with those of the conventional motor with same volume and specification. Test result showed that the speeds of the HTS induction motor were the same with synchronous speed up to 2.6 Nm and 1.788 rpm at 9.7 Nm. It guarantees the high efficiency of the HTS motor. Starting torque of the HTS motor was more than twice of the conventional motor.
A study on the engineering design and numerical thermo-hydraulic analysis for KSTAR TF coil structure cooling system has been conducted. The numerical analyses have been done to verify the engineering design of cooling using the commercial code, FLUENT and in-house code for calculating helium properties which varies with cooling tube's heat transfer. Through the engineering design process based on the steady heat balance concepts, the circular stainless steel tube with inner diameter of 4 mm for TF coil has been selected as cooling tube. From normal operation mode analysis results, total 28 cooling tubes were finally chosen. Also, three dimensional cool down analysis for TF coil with designed cooling tube was satisfied with next three design criteria. First is cooling work termination within a month, second is maximum temperature difference within 50 K in TF coil structure and third is exit helium pressure above 2 bar. Consequently, these cool down scenario results can afford to adopt as operating scenario data when KSTAR facilities operate.
The Cu - $Nb_3Sn$ composites wire as a superconducting material was prepared by in situ method as follow: Cu - 15wt.% Nb alloys which were melted in a high -frequency induction furnace and casted in bar were cold-worked up to the final diameter of 0.24 mm, electroplated with Sn, pre-treated in two steps and then diffused at $550{\sim}650^{\circ}C$ for 24 ~ 96 hrs. The overall $J_c$ and $T_c$ of the specimens were measured by the four point-probe method at 10 K in the magnetic field of 0 Tesla. The overall $J_c$ of the composites wire which diffused at $550^{\circ}C$ after pre-treating in two steps were generally higher than those of the wire at either $600^{\circ}C$ or $650^{\circ}C$. For the specimens diffused at $550^{\circ}C$, the overall $J_c$ were increased until 72 hrs. of diffusion time and then decreased. However, in case of diffusion at $600^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$, the overall $J_c$ were gradually decreased from the beginning. The maximum overall $J_c$ obtained in this experiment was $1.3{\times}10^4\;A/cm^2$, which was measured for the specimen diffused at $550^{\circ}C$ for 72 hrs. When the specimens were diffused at $550^{\circ}C$ for 72 hrs, after pre-treating, the measured critical temperature, $T_c$ was 16.19 K. Similar $T_c$ value were obtained in other specimens regardless of diffusion time and temperature.
Melt spun YbBa2Cu3Agx(x=0, 5, 12, 16 and 53) precursor alloy ribbons were oxidized at 263-330$^{\circ}C$ and treated at 820$^{\circ}C$, 855$^{\circ}C$ and 885$^{\circ}C$ under 1.0 atm oxygen pressure. In the ribbons treated at 820$^{\circ}C$, 855$^{\circ}C$and 885$^{\circ}C$ 1-2-4 phase (YbBa2Cu4O8) and 1-2-3 phase (YbBa2Cu3O{{{{ OMICRON _7-$\delta$ }})were formed respectively. The shape of 1-2-4 phase was distorted or ellipsoid. The 2-4-7 and 1-2-3 phases tooked the shape of bar. All the ribbons showed zero critical current density Jc at 77K in zero magnetic field. By considering the shape and the highest critical temperature (among the three phases) of the 1-2-3 phase we tried to increase the critical current density of the ribbons treated at 885$^{\circ}C$ by press deformation. About tenribbons were stacked and coupled by press deformation and then treated at 885$^{\circ}C$ These 1-2-3 phase did not show any texture in any of the ribbons. However they exhibited weak texture in the multilayered specimens. Among the multilayered specimens YbBa2Cu3Ag16 exhibited a Jc of 180 A/cm2 Among the above ribbons YbBa2Cu3Ag16 ribbon has the optimum composition to produce textured superconducting oxide with improved Jc by press deformation. Onset critical temperatures Ton of the multilayered YbBa2Cu3Agx(x=5, 12, 16 and 53) were measured as 88-90 K.
Y-Ba-Cu-O thin films were in-situ fabricated on LaAlO3(100) substrates using the second harmonics of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser. Thin films were deposited under 200 (mtorr) of oxygen atmosphere, when the substrate temperature was changed between 67$0^{\circ}C$ and 82$0^{\circ}C$. After deposition, the films were in-situ annealed at 50$0^{\circ}C$ under 2/3 bar of oxygen pressure. We showed that the deposition temperature affects the formation of superconducting phase, the resistance, and the surface morphology. The Y-Ba-Cu-O thin films deposited at 76$0^{\circ}C$ show the zero resistance critical temperature of 85 K.
The characteristic of the superconducting magnetic energy storage(SMES) system is faster response, longer life time, more economical, and environment friendly than other uninterruptible power supply(UPS) using battery. So, the SMES system can be used to develop methods for improving power quality where a short interruption of power could lead to a long and costly shutdown. Recently, cryogen free SMES has developed using BSCCO(Bismuth Strontium Calcium Copper Oxide) wire. We fabricated and tested the conduction cooling system for the 600 kJ class HTS SMES. The experiment was accomplished for the simulation coils. The simulation coils were made of aluminium, it is equivalent to thermal mass of 600 kJ HTS SMES coil. The coil is cooled with two GM coolers through the copper conduction bar. In this paper, we report that the test results of cool-down and heat loads characteristics of the simulation coils. The developed conduction cooling system adapted to 600 kJ HTS SMES system and cope with the unexpected sudden heat impact, too.
Recently, the development of superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) has been required as power demands increase in the power system. A distribution-level prototype resistive SFCL using coated conductor (CC) has been developed by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. and Yonsei University for the first time in the world. The ratings of the SFCL are 13.2kV/630A at normal operating condition. A novel non-inductive winding method is used in fabricating coils so there is almost zero impedance during normal operation. The distribution SFCL is cooled by sub-cooled liquid nitrogen $(LN_2)$ of 65K and 3 bar to enhance cryo-dielectric performance, critical current density, and thermal conductivity. In order to make reliable operation of an SFCL in real power systems, we monitored and controled its operation conditions by using supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) method. Thus, a monitoring system for the SFCL employing information technology (IT) is proposed and developed to be on the lookout for the operation conditions such as inside temperature, inside pressure, $LN_2$ level, voltage and current. Since operation temperature should be kept constant, bang-bang control for temperature feedback with a heater attached to the cold head of cryo-cooler is applied to the system. Short-circuit tests with prospective fault current of 10kA and AC dielectric withstand voltage tests up to 143kV for 1 minute were successfully performed at Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute. This paper deals with the development of a distribution level SFCL and its monitoring system for reliable operation.
The characteristics of the Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) system are faster response, longer life time, more economical, and environment friendly than other Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) using battery. Fast charge and discharge time of SMES system can provide powerful performance of improving power quality in the grid. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of SMES, the authors make a 10kJ SMES system for connection with RTDS (Real Time Digital Simulator). Because the characteristics of superconducting magnet are very important in SMES system, the necessary items such as thermal characteristic, mechanical stress and protection circuit should be considered. In this paper, the authors experimented thermal characteristics of the 10kJ SMES system. The experiment was accomplished using a simulation coils made of aluminium. It has same dimension of the 10kJ class HTS SMES coil. The coil was cooled with GM (Gifford -McMahon) cryocooler through the OFHC (Oxgen Free High thermal Conductivity) conduction bar. The test results of cool down and heat loads characteristics of the simulation coils are described in detail.

To keep the superconducting (SC) magnet coils of KSTAR at proper operating conditions, not only the coils but also other cold components, such as thermal shields (TS), magnet structures, SC bus-lines (BL), and current leads (CL) must be maintained at their respective cryogenic temperatures. A helium refrigeration system (RRS) with an exergetic equivalent cooling power of 9 kW at 4.5 K without liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) pre-cooling has been manufactured and installed. The main components of the KST AR helium refrigeration system (HRS) can be classified into the warm compression system (WCS) and the cryogenic devices according to the operating temperature levels. The process helium is compressed from 1 bar to 22 bar passing through the WCS and is supplied to cryogenic devices. The main components of cryogenic devices are consist of cold box (C/B) and distribution box (D/B). The C/B cool-down and make the various cryogenic helium for the KSTAR Tokamak and the various cryogenic helium is distributed by the D/B as per the KSTAR requirement. In this proceeding, we will present the commissioning results of the KSTAR HRS. Circuits which can simulate the thermal loads and pressure drops corresponding to the cooling channels of each cold component of KSTAR have been integrated into the helium distribution system of the HRS. Using those circuits, the performance and the capability of the HRS, to fulfill the mission of establishing the appropriate operating condition for the KSTAR SC magnet coils, have been successfully demonstrated.
