  • The super-resolution near-field structure (super-RENS) disc system is the most promising one for next-generation optical data storage systems to succeed the Blu-ray disc (BD). In this paper, we apply the simplicial canonical piecewise-linear (SCPWL) model to modeling super-RENS read-out signals since reliable and accurate channel modeling is essential for performance analysis and development of equalizers for super-RENS systems. The validity of this model is verified using radio frequency (RF) signal samples obtained from a super-RENS disc, The experiment results on modeling indicate that the SCPWL model can be efficiently utilized for the nonlinear modeling of the super-RENS systems.

  • In this paper, we investigate the compressed sensing (CS) algorithms for modeling a super-resolution near-field structure (super-RENS) disc system with a sparse Volterra filter. It is well known that the super-RENS disc system has severe nonlinear inter-symbol interference (ISI). A nonlinear system with memory can be well described with the Volterra series. Furthermore, CS can restore sparse or compressed signals from measurements. For these reasons, we employ the CS algorithms to estimate a sparse super-RENS read-out channel. The evaluation results show that the CS algorithms can efficiently construct a sparse Volterra model for the super-RENS read-out channel.

  • The research topic of super-RENS technology is shifting from the signal intensity (CNR; Carrier to Noise Ratio) to the signal uniformity (Jitter or bER). To achieve an uniform signal characteristics, it is important to reduce signal fluctuation in a super-RENS disc. In this study, we investigated the relation between signal fluctuation and low frequency noise (LFN), and analyzed LFN increase in recording and readout processes. It was found that signal fluctuation had a close relationship with the LFN. Also, it was found that the recorded mark shape such a bubble type and high readout power increased the LFN in recording and readout process of a super-RENS disc. So, using non-bubble type recording material and low super-resolution readout material, we markedly improved the LFN in a super-RENS disc.

  • Recently, various recording technologies are studied for optical data storage. After standardization of BD (Blue-ray Disc) and HD-DVD (High-Definition Digital Versatile Disc), the industry is looking for a suitable technology for next generation optical data storage. Super-RENS (Super-resolution near field structure) technique, which is capable of compatibility with other systems, is one of next optical data storage. In this paper, we analyze the nonlinearity of Super-RENS read-out signal through the bicoherence test, which uses HOS (Higher-Order Statistics) and apply neural networks for nonlinear modeling. The model structure considered in this paper is the NARX (Nonlinear AutoRegressive eXogenous) model. The experiment results indicate that the read-out signals have nonlinear characteristics. In addition, it verified the possibility that neural networks can be utilized for nonlinear modeling of Super-RENS systems.

  • A correct and accurate model of optical data storage systems is very important in development and performance evaluation of various data detection algorithms. In this paper, we present an nonlinear modeling scheme of a super-resolution near-field structure (Super-RENS) read-out signal using the canonical piecewise-linear (PWL) and the second-order Volterra models. Nonlinear equalizers may be developed on the basis of the information obtained from this nonlinear modeling. To mitigate the nonlinear inter-symbol interference (ISI), we proposed a new nonlinear equalizer for Super-RENS discs. Its validity is tested with the RF signal samples obtained from a Super-RENS disc. The experiment results verified the possibility that the canonical PWL and the second-older Volterra models can be utilized for nonlinear modeling of Super-RENS systems. The proposed equalizers are superior to the one without equalization in terms of bit error rate (BER).

  • Super-resolution near-field structure (super-RENS) read-out samples are affected by a nonlinear and noncausal channel, which results in inter-symbol interference (ISI). In this study, we investigate asymmetry or domain bloom in super-RENS in terms of equalization. Domain bloom is caused by writing process in optical recording. We assume in this work that the asymmetry symbol conversion scheme is to generate asymmetric symbols, and then a linear finite impulse response filter can model the read-out channel. For equalizing this overall nonlinear channel, the read-out signals are deconvolved with the finite impulse response filter and its output is decided based on the decision rule table that is developed from the asymmetry symbol conversion scheme. The proposed equalizer is investigated with the simulations and the real super-RENS samples in terms of raw bit error rate.

  • It is widely accepted that the reading mechanism of Super-RENS(super-resolution near field structure) and Super-ROM(super-resolution read only memory) is closely related with non-linear temperature dependent material properties such as refractive indices, phase change. Furthermore, the dynamic change of the temperature distribution also an essential part of reading mechanism of Super-RENS/ROM. Therefore, the knowledge of the temperature distribution as a function a time is one of the important keys to reveal the physics of reading mechanism in Super-RENS/ROM. We calculated time-dependent temperature distribution in a 3-dimensional Super-ROM disk structure when moving laser beam is irradiated. With a help of commercial software FEMLAB which employed finite element method, we simulated the temperature distribution of ROM structure whose pit diameter is 120-nm with 50-nm depth. Energy absorption by moving laser irradiation, time variations of heat transfer processes, heat fluxes, heat transfer ratios, and temperature distributions of the complicate 3-dimensional ROM structure have been obtained.

  • We report the random pattern characteristics of the super resolution near field structure(Super-RENS) write once read-many(WORM) disc at a blue laser optical system(laser wavelength 405nm, numerical aperture 0.85) and the Super-RENS read only memory(ROM) disc at a blue laser optical system(laser wavelength 659nm, numerical aperture 0.65). We used the WORM disc of which carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) of 75nm is 47dB and ROM disc of which carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) of 173nm is 45dB. We controlled the equalization (EQ) characteristics and used advanced partial-response maximum likelihood (PRML) technique. We obtained bit error rate (bER) of 10-3 level at 50GB WORM disc and bite error rate of 10-4 level at 50GB level ROM disc. This result shows high feasibility of Super-RENS technology for practical use.
