This study was initiated to evaluate the growth characteristics of seven creeping bentgrass cultivars in summer, 'Penncross' showed the worst visual quality, whereas 'Penn A-4' and 'Crenshaw' the best quality. 'Putter', which was maintained a fair quality during the test period, was regarded as a good cultivar because of no significant variation in summer as compared to the other caltivars. 'Crenshaw',' L-93' and 'Penn A-4' were greater in chlorophyll content and 'Penncross' lowest during the summer. Also, 'SR1020' had a low content of chlorophyll. 'Putter' greatly increased in chlorophyll content after fertilization. The highest shoot density($19.3/cm^2$) was found with 'L-93' in early August, followed by 'Crenshaw', 'Penn A-4', 'Putter', 'Dominant', and 'SR1020' in that order. However, 'Penncross' was lowest($15.7/cm^2$). As for a root length, 'L-93' was longest, being over an average 5.5cm. 'Penn A-4' and 'Putter' also showed good result in root growth. However, the root length considerably decreased with 'SR1020', 'Penncross' and 'Dominant' in summer. Brown patch was a serious disease for the most cultivars, except 'Penncross'. 'Dominant' had the most serious damage. 'Putter', 'L-93', 'Crenshaw', 'SR1020', and 'Penn A-4' were also greater in damage over the others. In regards of algae occurrence in summer, 'Penn A-4' had the least damage, while 'Dominant' the greatest. In conclusion, 'Crenshaw', 'Penn A-4' and 'L-93' were the best cultivars in terms of summer growth. Conversely, 'Penncross' was the poorest one. However, this study was conducted under the conditions of one-year old green. Accordingly, in-depth experiment should be done over several years to elucidate the characteristics of growth for the wide range of creeping bentgrass cultivars during the summer.
Landscape crops have decorated its surrounding landscape by being cultivated from spring to late fall. Recently, landscape crops are starting to get the limelight as crops that can be cultivated in large area farmlands. Therefore, we examined the growth characteristics of landscape crops, green manure yield and nitrogen production of crops that are cultivated during summer, which are sunflower, cosmos, sunnhemp and sesbania, in order to select crops that can be utilized as landscape crops and green manure crops. The height of landscape crops increased when the harvest time was later. Especially, sunnhemp, cosmos, sunflower and sorghum grew over 100cm. The days to flowering of sunnhemp and cosmos were 50 and 53 days each, and their flowering period of more than 50 days were long. The days to flowering of sunflower, which was 52 days, was short, and its flowering period, which was 21 days, was also short. When the harvest time was later, the green manure yield and nitrogen production of all crops increased. Individually, the green manure yield was higher in sunnhemp, sorghum, sunflower, with $7.2{\sim}7.5Mg\;ha^{-1}$, and was lowest in sesbania. The nitrogen production was higher in sunnhemp, with $168.1kg\;ha^{-1}$ Therefore, as seen in its flowering characteristics, green manure yield and nitrogen production, sunnhemp had the best green manure and landscape effects among the landscape crops for summer.
This study was performed to find an efficient method to overcome extremely high temperature in greenhouses during summer season. The actual utilization of greenhouses during hot summer season showed that about 21.6% of the investigated greenhouse farms were in fallow state, and most of greenhouse farms were cultivated under the very inferior environment. Thermal environment of greenhouses according to the evaporative cooling method and several assistant cooling methods such as ventilation, shading screen, roof sprinkling were examined. As the each assistant cooling method was used, about 74.8%, 25.9%, and 58.2% of temperatures measured at intervals of ten minutes between ten and seventeen o'clock were above 35$^{\circ}C$. When shading screen and evaporative cooling system were operated, most greenhouse air temperatures were maintained below 35$^{\circ}C$, and showed a drop of 3.8~4.2$^{\circ}C$ as compared with naturally ventilated greenhouse.

Species composition and seasonal variation of aquatic organism in the coastal waters off Taean, Korea were investigated using catches by commercial fishing of the pot and gill net from April 2010 to January 2011. A total of 58 species, 10,602 individuals and 547,569g of aquatic organism were collected during the study. Aquatic organism were composed of 22 species of Pisces, 20 species of Crustacea, 8 species of Gastropoda, 3 species of Echinodea, 2 species of Cephalopoda and Bivalvia, and 1 species of Holothuroidea. 41 species in 9 orders and 22 families were collected by the pot, and 28 species in 15 orders and 22 families were collected by the gill net. Volutharpa ampullacea was the most dominant in the pot, while Okamejei kenojei was the most dominant in the gill net. These two species accounted for 73.9% in the number of individuals, and 64.4% in biomass. The number of species was high in spring in the pot, and autumn in the gill net. The number of individuals and biomass were highest in winter and summer respectively in the pot, and summer in the gill net. The number of species of the consignment quantity caught by commercial fishery of the pot and gill net in Mohang was 12 and 14 respectively. Cluster analysis based on species composition of the 18 most common species showed that the species were separated into 3 different group. Group A was composed of species which were abundant in spring, group B was composed of species which were abundant in summer and autumn, and group C was composed of year-round residents.
This study has observed 12 parks (20 spots) in Seoul to know the number of users, gender, age groups for the units of 30 minutes from 06:00AM till 10:00PM. According to the systematic characteristic of the surveyed outdoor exercise place, the details of their users during the summer time were analyzed from the objective viewpoint. Major results of analysis are as follows: Firstly, in case of the riverside of the Han River 07:00AM marked a mini peak and 21:00PM reached the peak, and in case of sub-stream neighborhoods, 21:00PM showed only one peak. On the other hand, in case of neighborhood parks (including pocket park) no peak time was noticeable. Secondly, in case of the riverside of the Han River and the neighborhoods of sub-streams, people used the exercise equipment remarkably at night, and in case of neighborhood parks people used the exercise equipment a little bit more in the morning than in the afternoon. Thirdly, in case of nights in summer the riverside of the Han River was preferred by men, while the neighborhoods of sub-streams were preferred by women and the neighborhood parks showed no difference in the number of users among men and women. Fourthly, differently from men, women do not regard the exercise so seriously as men and their purpose of using outdoor exercise place is to use their leisure time mostly with their family members or neighbors, and women prefer light and comfortable exercises. Fifthly, in summer even those who like to exercise a lot like to exercise in the morning to avoid summer heat. Therefore, provision of shades in summer is very important.
Hot environments can affect feed intake and lactation, and the subsequent unavailability of important micronutrients to the newborn piglet can impair piglet growth, reduce the viability of newborn piglets and limit their subsequent performance. This work addresses the effects of hot environments (summer season) upon the reproductive performance of sows during gestation and lactation as well as on the serum levels of vitamins and the concentration of immunoglobulins in their litters in comparison with the winter season. Fourteen sows were evaluated over 100 ± 2 days of gestation in each season. The temperature and humidity index (THI) was used as an indirect measure of heat stress during gestation. The reproductive performance, milk yield, and body condition of the sows were recorded. The concentrations of vitamin E and vitamin A in piglets and in sow serum, colostrum, milk and feed were determined by HPLC; immunoglobulins were assessed by an ELISA. The THI index indicated that animals were subject to heat stress only in during the summer. Although the effect was not significant, there were a lower number of piglets at birth and at weaning and the milk yield in summer compared with winter. There was no difference (p > 0.05) in the body condition of sows between seasons. Season had an effect (p < 0.05) on the vitamin A concentration of postpartum sow serum (0.29 ㎍/mL in winter vs 0.21 ㎍/mL in summer) and on the vitamin E concentration before birth (2.00 ㎍/mL in winter vs 0.90 ㎍/mL in summer). Vitamin E in milk was higher (p < 0.05) in winter than in summer (2.23 vs 1.81 ㎍/mL). Serum levels of vitamins A and E in piglets at birth were lower (p < 0.05) in winter than in summer. The concentrations of immunoglobulins (IgG and IgA) in colostrum and milk were similar between seasons (p > 0.05), but the IgA in piglet serum was higher in winter than in summer (p < 0.05). High temperatures produced heat stress in sows, which affected certain aspects of production that can be translated into economic losses for this sector.
This study aimed to compare the dynamics of air temperature and velocity under two different ventilation and housing systems during summer and winter in Korea. The $NH_3$ concentration of both housing systems was also investigated in relation to the pig's growth. The ventilation systems used were; negative pressure type for the enclosed pig house (EPH) and natural airflow for the conventional pig house (CPH). Against a highly fluctuating outdoor temperature, the EPH was able to maintain a stable temperature at 24.8 to $29.1^{\circ}C$ during summer and 17.9 to $23.1^{\circ}C$ during winter whilst the CPH had a wider temperature variance during summer at 24.7 to $32.3^{\circ}C$. However, the temperature fluctuation of the CPH during winter was almost the same with that of EPH at 14.5 to $18.2^{\circ}C$. The NH3 levels in the CPH ranged from 9.31 to 16.9 mg/L during summer and 5.1 to 19.7 mg/L during winter whilst that of the EPH pig house was 7.9 to 16.1 mg/L and 3.7 to 9.6 mg/L during summer and winter, respectively. These values were less than the critical ammonia level for pigs with the EPH maintaining a lower level than the CPH in both winter and summer. The air velocity at pig nose level in the EPH during summer was 0.23 m/s, enough to provide comfort because of the unique design of the inlet feature. However, no air movement was observed in almost all the lower portions of the CPH during winter because of the absence of an inlet feature. There was a significant improvement in weight gain and feed intake of pigs reared in the EPH compared to the CPH (p<0.05). These findings proved that despite the difference in the housing systems, a stable indoor temperature was necessary to minimize the impact of an avoidable and highly fluctuating outdoor temperature. The EPH consistently maintained an effective indoor airspeed irrespective of season; however the CPH had defective and stagnant air at pig nose level during winter. Characteristics of airflow direction and pattern were consistent relative to housing system during both summer and winter but not of airspeed. The ideal air velocity measurement favored the EPH and therefore can be appropriate for the Korean environment. Further emphasis on its cost effectiveness will be the subject of future investigations.
This study was to investigate phytoplankton communities and to evaluate the effects of hydrological and physical-chemical environmental factors in major five dam reservoirs in the Han River water system. Annual average of chlorophyll a concentration in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong and Lake Doam was higher than that of Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong. The opposite seasonal variation patterns of phytoplankton growth were observed in dam reservoirs; the highest biomass in spring of dry season in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong which are the river-type reservoirs and Lake Doam where turbidity was high throughout the year, and in summer and autumn of rainy season in Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong which are the lake-type reservoirs, indicating that the seasonal pattern for growth of phytoplankton in on-river reservoirs is mainly determined by hydrologic characteristics. The dominant species of phytoplankton in Lake Paldang, Lake Cheongpyeong and Lake Doam, where the concentration of nutrients was relatively high, were Bacillariophyceae such as Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Aulacoseira granulata var. angustissima in Lake Paldang and Lake Cyeongpyeong and Nitzschia spp. in Lake Doam throughout all season. The dominant species of phytoplankton in Lake Chungju and Lake Hoengseong which showed the oligo-mesotrophic state, were Bacillariophyceae such as Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Cyclotella pseudostelligera in spring and winter, but Cyanophyceae such as Microcystis spp. in summer.

This study compares the summer monsoon circulations during a heavy rainfall period over the Korean peninsular from 11 to 18 July 2004, simulated by three widely used regional models; WRF, MM5, and RSM. An identical model setup is carried out for all the experiments, except for the physical option differences in the RSM. The three models with a nominal resolution of about 50 km over Korea are nested by NCEP-DOE reanalysis data. Another RSM experiment with the same cumulus parameterization scheme as in the WRF and MM5 is designed to investigate the importance of the representation of subgrid-scale parameterized convection in reproducing monsoonal circulations in East Asia. All thee models are found to be capable of reproducing the general distribution of monsoonal precipitation, extending northeastward from south China across the Korean peninsula, to northern Japan. The results from the WRF and MM5 are similar in terms of accumulated precipitation, but a slightly better performance in the WRF than in the MM5. The RSM improves the bias for precipitation as compared to those from the WRF and MM5, but the pattern correlation is degraded due to overestimation of precipitation in northern China. In the comparison of simulated synoptic scale features, the RSM is found to reproduce the large-scale features well compared to the results from the MM5 and WRF. On the other hand, the simulated precipitation from the RSM with the convection scheme used in the MM5 and WRF is closer to that from the WRF and MM5 simulations, indicating the significant dependency of simulated precipitation in East Asia on the cumulus parameterization scheme.

This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of fourteen odor compounds from a total of 10 sampling sites in residential areas around Banwol-Sihwa industrial complex. The measurement data are analyzed and compared with sensation of odor unit. Only a hydrogen sulfide out of four sulfur compounds was quantified above the detection limit (0.06 ppb) in the residential area around Banwol industrial complex with leather companies and a sewage treatment plant. The concentrations of VOCs were higher than those measured from a big city, and styrene showed the relatively high concentration from all sampling sites ($2.1{\sim}37.8\;ppb$). In the case of carbonyl compounds, acetaldehyde was found most frequently with the mean of 3.97 ppb, and its concentration difference was not significant between Banwol and Sihwa industrial complex. Of the nitrogen compounds, ammonia was measured at the relatively high concentration from all the sampling sites ($12{\sim}707\;ppb$), and a trimethylamine was found at the odor threshold level (0.1 ppb). The concentrations of styrene and ammonia showed relatively seasonal variation, the concentration of styrene in summer was five times higher than that in autumn, the concentration of ammonia in autumn was two times higher than that in summer. However other odorous compounds did not show such strong seasonal variation. Odor-concentration relationship between odor unit and $H_{2}S$ concentrations from industrial sources was examined and used as odor sensation evaluation, and thus the neighbourhood odor complaints maybe caused during the four seasons from the results.
