  • Proposed is improved compact self-mixing type semiconductor-laser range finder, which measures mode-hop time interval (MHI). Measurement error caused by the fluctuation of MHI is greatly reduced by averaging many contiguous MHI's. The main cause of measurement error 1.5% at ranges from 0.1m to 0.8m is attributed to the optical phase change of a returned light from a focusing lens. Accuracy improvement by stabilization of the returned light is suggested.

  • This paper introduces a way to realize biquadratic transfer functions using Operational Amplifiers (OAs) and Operational Transconductance Amplifiers (OTAs). The basic circuit configuration is constructed with two OAs and five OTAs. It is shown that low-pass, band-pass, high-pass, band-stop and all-pass transfer functions can be realized by suitably choosing the input terminals. And the circuit parameters can also be set by the transconductance gains of the OTAs independently. An example is given together with simulated results by PSPICE.

  • The measurable speed range of the self-mixing type semiconductor laser range finder has been greatly improved by employing a new processing circuit. Using this range finder as an external finder of a single lens reflex (SLR) autofocus (AF) camera, some clear photographs of an object moving at a medium speed of 20 mm/s is obtained.

  • A new laser diode range-finding speedometer is proposed, which is modulated by a pair of positive and negative triangular pulse current superimposed on a dc current. Since a target velocity is directly obtained form a pure Doppler beat frequency measured during the non-modulation period, the new sensor is free from the difficulties due to the critical velocity encountered in the previous sensor. Furthermore, the different amplitude of the two triangular pluses are so adjusted that the measurable range using only one laser head is greatly expanded to 10cm through 150cm, which is about two times that of the previous sensor. The measurement accuracy for velocity of .+-.6mm/s through .+-.20mm/s and for range is about 1%, and 2%, respectively. Because the new sensor can be operated automatically using a microcomputer, it will be useful for application of a 3-D range image measurement of a slowly moving object.

  • Recently, we proposed a 3-D range-image measuring system for a slowly moving object by mechanically scanning a laser light beam emitted from a self mixing laser diode. In this paper, we introduced that every object moves along a straight line course, which is set diagonally against the semiconductor laser beam so that we can recognize each shape and size parameters of objects separately from the acquired 3-D range-image. We measured a square mesa on a square plane as an object. The measured velocity was 4.44mm/s and 4.63mm/s with an error of 0.56mm/s to 0.37mm/s. And thickness error of the mesa was 0.5mm to 0.6mm, which was obtained from the 3-D range-image of the standstill or moving object with thickness of 17.Omm.

  • Recently, we proposed a compact digital vibrometer using a self-mixing laser Doppler velocimeter (SM-LDV). In this paper, we theoretically obtained formulas giving lower and upper limit of measurable velocity. In the prototype digital vibrometer, the theoretical value was 6.7mm/s and 162.8mm/s, respectively, which agreed well with the measured value. The upper limit of measurable displacement amplitude was 12OO.mu.m at 10Hz, and 250.mu.m at 100Hz. Furthermore, the measurement accuracy the displacement amplitude was within -3% and average error -1.3%, when the shape of the sawtooth contained in the Doppler beat signal is clear and sharp. The measurement accuracy is found to depend on a degree of sawtooth asymmetry (DSA).

  • Accuracy improvement of a self-mixing semiconductor laser range finder is predicted by simulation, in which the laser modulation current is reshaped to give an ideal triangular waveform of the optical frequency change. The maximum range measurement error of less than 0.1% in a wide range of O.1m to 1m is expected by the reshaping of the modulation current. Experimental verification of the effect of current reshaping on the linearization of the derivative of the optical frequency change curve is given.

  • The accuracy of training-based activity recognition depends on the training procedure and the extent to which the training dataset comprehensively represents the activity and its varieties. Additionally, training incurs substantial cost and effort in the process of collecting training data. To address these limitations, we have developed a training-free activity recognition approach based on a fuzzy logic algorithm that utilizes a generic activity model and an associated activity semantic knowledge. The approach is validated through experimentation with real activity datasets. Results show that the fuzzy logic based algorithms exhibit comparable or better accuracy than other training-based approaches.

  • Wave breaking and breaking wave-induced hydrodynamics are very important subjects in the field of coastal and ocean hydrodynamics and engineering. In the coastal zone, a submerged breakwater has been increasingly popular, since it is one of nature-matching structures with multi- functions such as (1) wave energy dissipation by wave breaking and friction, (2) oxygen supply to sea by wave breaking and breaking wave, (3) water purification by entrained air bubbles, (4) keeping. good seascape. and (5) good habitat for sea livings. Recently, the breaking wave-induced high frequency pressure over a submerged breakwater is said to have a function of gathering sea livings around the structure, which has encouraged the construction of the submerged breakwater in coastal zone. • Anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) is successfully applied in mM level detection of mercury ion in an electroplating bath which is currently used in preparing a cathodic electrolyzer. Glassy carbon electrode is used for the detection and the optimum condition obtained is 10 s deposition at −1.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl and stripping by scanning from −1.4 to +0.4 V vs Ag/AgCl at 50 mV/s. By applying the method, the mercury ion concentration in the electroplating bath could be successfully monitored during the plating.
