  • The peformence tests of zinc-based desulfurization sorbents using the yellow earth as support for the hot gas clean up were carried out. The zinc-based sorbent with 25 wt% yellow earth was prepared, and their properties such as the reaction rate, the sulfur capacity and the attrition resistance, were investigated. The reactivity tests for hot gas desulfurization was performed at middle temperatures (sulfidation/regeneration:480$^{\circ}C$/580$^{\circ}C$). During multi-cyclic desulfurization, the deactivation of zinc-based sorbent was decreased by the addition of yellow earth, and their efficiency was enhanced. The ZnO/yellow earth sorbent had high reactivity, good regenerability, long-term durability (about 19 gS/100 g sorbent for 10-cycles) and high attrition resistance (AI=19.1%). It was concluded that the peroperties of zinc-based sorbent were improved by metal oxides (Fe$_2$O$_3$, Na$_2$O, MnO$_2$, etc) in the yellow earth. From these results, it was confirmed that the desulfurization properties of zinc-based sorbents at middle temperatures could be improved by the yellow earth using as support.

  • This study explored a direct SET-photochemical strategy to construct a new family of thioene conjugated-naphthalamide fluorophore based lariat-crown ethers which show strong binding properties towards heavy metal ions. Irradiations of designed nitrogen branched (trimethylsilyl)methylthio-terminated polyethylenoxy-tethered naphthalimides in acidic methanol solutions have led to highly efficient photocyclization reactions to generate naphthalamide based lariat type thiadiazacrown ethers directly in chemo- and regio-selective manners which undergo very facile secondary dehydration reactions during separation processes to produce their corresponding amidoenethio ether cyclic products tethered with electron donating diethyleneoxy- and diethyenethio-side arm chains. Fluorescence and metal cation binding properties of the lariat type enamidothio products were examined. The photocyclized amidoenethio products, thioene conjugated naphthalamide fluorophore containing lariat-thiadiazacrowns exhibited strong fluorescence emissions in region of 330-450 nm along with intramolecular exciplex emissions in region of 450-560 nm with their maxima at 508 nm. Divalent cation $Hg^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ showed strong binding to sulfur atom(s) in side arm chain and atoms in enethiadiazacrown ether rings which led to significant enhancement of fluorescence from its chromophore singlet excited state and concomitant quenching of exciplex emission. The dual fluorescence emission responses towards divalent cations might provide a new guide for design and development of fluorescence sensors for detecting those metals.

  • Lead (II) ion selective poly(aniline) solid contact electrode based on Tetramethylthiuram monosulfide ionophore as a sulfur containing sensing material is successfully developed. The electrode exhibits good linear response of 25.6 mV / decade (at $20{\pm}0.2^{\circ}C$, r2=0.995) within the concentration range of $1.0{\times}10^{-1}{\sim}4.0{\times}10^{-7}$ M Pb (II). The composition of this electrode was Ionophore : PVC : dioctylphthalate : potassiumtetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)borate : Oleic acid = 5.0 : 20.0 : 25.0 : 4.0 : 5.0. When we consider the results of using different composition electrodes based on only one potassiumtetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)borate or Oleic acid liphophlic additive, poly(aniline) solid contact electrode based on Tetramethylthiuram monosulfide ionophore with potassiumtetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)borate and Oleic acid liphophlic additive had the best result in response characteristics. The electrode shows good selectivity for lead (II) ion in comparison with alkali, alkaline earth, transition and heavy metal ions. This electrode is suitable for use with aqueous solutions of pH 3.0 ~ 7.0 and their standard deviation in the measured emf differences was ${\pm}2.94$ mV at Tris buffered lead sample solution of $1.0{\times}10^{-2}$ M and ${\pm}2.82$ mV at Tris buffered lead sample solution of $1.0{\times}10^{-3}$ M. Their stabilization time was less than 710 s. and response time was less than 16 s.

  • The zinc(II) complex, $Zn(NCS)_2(C_3H_4N_2S)_2$, I, has been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The complex I crystallizes in the triclinic system, $P\bar{1}$ space group with a = 7.587(1), b = 8.815(1), $c=12.432(2){\AA}$, ${\alpha}=75.584(8)$, ${\beta}=83.533(9)$, ${\gamma}=68.686(8)^{\circ}$, $V=750.0(2){\AA}^3$, Z = 2, $R_1=0.036$ and ${\omega}R_2=0.101$. The central Zn(II) atom has a tetrahedral coordination geometry, with the heterocyclic nitrogen atoms of 2-aminothiazole ligands and the nitrogen atoms of isothiocyanate ligands. The crystal structure is stabilized by one-dimensional networks of the intermolecular $N-H{\cdots}S$ hydrogen bonds between the amino group of 2-aminothiazole ligands and the sulfur atom of isothiocyanate ligands. Based on the results of thermal analysis, the thermal decomposition reaction of complex I was analyzed to have three distinctive stages such as the loss of 2-aminothiazole, the decomposition of isothiocyanate and the formation of metal oxide.

  • The high temperature pleated filter bags which were used during this study were made of pleated nonwoven fabric of heat and acid resistant polysulfonate fibers which can withstand the heat up to $300^{\circ}C$ and have a filtration area which is 3 to 5 times larger than the conventional round filter bags. Cartridge module packed with 3 kind of the sulfur impregnated activated-carbon based sorbents were inserted in the inner of the pleated filter bag. This type of pleated filter bag was designed to remove not only the particulate matter but also the gaseous elemental mercury. The electrostatic precipitator part can enhance the particulate removal efficiency and reduce the pressure drop of the pleated filter bag by agglomerated particles to form a more porous dust layer on the surface of the pleated bag which is increased the filter bag cleaning efficiency. In addition, the most of particles are separated from the flue gas stream through the cyclone and the electrostatic precipitator part which were installed at the lower part and main body part of the convergence particulate collector, respectively. Thus reduce particulate loading of the high temperature pleated filter bags were applied in this study to analyze the removal characteristics of particulate matter and gaseous elemental mercury.

  • Hunter's color value "a" in dried-persimmon of table and full ripe fruit was higher than that in unripe fruit. In case of soluble solid content, full ripe fruit was $50^{\circ}Brix$, the highest degree, while unripe fruit was $40^{\circ}Brix$, the lowest degree. PPO activation of unripe fruit was 4.7, which was higher than table-ripe fruit (0.7) and full ripe (1.0). Polyphenol oxidase activation remained even while drying, but there was no difference in PPO activation degree as drying period increased. Total phenol content of unripe fruit was 101.4, which was higher than table-ripe fruit (57.5) and full ripe fruit (67.4). Total phenol content level increased as drying period increased, which was based on fresh weight. Hardness of unripe and table ripe fruit continued to decrease until three weeks during softening. After that, hardness was high and it started drying. However, in full ripe fruit, hardness increased after two weeks and softening was fast during the drying period, and its weight reduction rate was lower than that of unripe and table ripe fruit.

  • Traditional investigation procedures of soil and groundwater contamination are followed by soil gas sampling, soil sampling, groundwater sampling, establishment of monitoring wells, and groundwater monitoring. It often takes several weeks to obtain the analysis reports, and sometimes, it needs supplemental sampling and analysis to delineate the polluted area. Laser induced fluorescence (LIF) system is designed for the detection of free-phase petroleum pollutants, and it is suitable for on-site real-time site investigation when coupling with a direct push testing tool. Petroleum products always contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds possessing fluorescence characteristics that make them detectable through LIF detection. In this study, LIF spectroscopy of 5 major fuel products was conducted to establish the databank of LIF fluorescence characteristic spectra, including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, marine fuel and low-sulfur fuel. Multivariate statistical tools were also applied to distinguish LIF fluorescence characteristic spectra among the mixtures of selected fuel products. This study successfully demonstrated the feasibility of identifying fuel species based on LIF characteristic fluorescence spectra, also LIF seemed to be uncovered its powerful ability of tracing underground petroleum leakages.

  • The Bobae sericite deposit occurs in rhyodacite of the Cretaceous volcanogenic sedimentary rocks, Upper Yucheon Group, in the western part of Pusan. The alteration zones are divided into the phyllie and prophylitic zone based on the mineral assemblages. The phyllic zone is subdivided into three subzones; Andalusite-Pyrophyllite, Sericite and Albite subzones. Oxides vs. $Al_2O_3$ contents show variations corresponding to mineral assemblage in each alteration zone. On the basis of bulk chemical compositions, it was found that $SiO_2$ increases in the Andalusite-Pyrophyllite subzone and $K_2O$ in the Sericite subzone. The oxygen, hydrogen and sulfur isotope analysis indicates that the fluids were originally derived from the residual magmatic solution. It has been mixed with abundant meteoric water later. The ore-forming temperatures obtained from sericite (illite) geothermometer are about $250{\sim}350^{\circ}C$. Considering the phase stability relation, PoT conditions of the andalusite-pyrophyllite subzone were estimated to be less than 0.5 kb and almost $400^{\circ}C$, respectively. The K-Ar ages of sericites indicate that the clay deposit is genetically related to the Cretaceous-Paleogene Masan Hornblende-Biotite Granite.

  • In the regeneratively cooled combustion chambers using hydrocarbon fuels, coking occurs as the wall temperature increases which generates compounds deposition on the wall. This phenomenon reduces cooling capability of the coolant, finally it can cause damage to combustor by overheating of chamber wall. In this paper electrical heating equipment which is used for the coking experiments and the test results are introduced. The compatibilities of copper alloy with let A-1 were assessed at each condition based on the test results.
