This experimental study was carried out to examine the utilization of the anthracite ash as a fertizer. It was found that the ash had very small amount of the soluble matters in 2% citric acid solution therefore it is proved ineffective as a fertilizer. When the small amount of calcinated dolomite was added to the anthracite, it was observed that the resulting ash showed much increased solubility of magnesium, calcium, sulfur and silica etc in the citric acid solution. So it is concluded that the ash of the mixture of anthracite and calcinated dolomite would be one of the useful soil-conditioner and supplyer of nutrients.
The purpose of this study was to elucidate the chemical changes and formation of sulfur minerals following reduction and subsequent oxidation of the acid sulfate soils derived from the fluvio-marine plains in Gimhae area. Changes in pH, Eh and water soluble $SO_4$, Fe, Al, K, na and Ca were determined in the soil under the reduced and oxidized conditions. These chemical properties were related to the formation of the pyrite and jarosite, the major sulfur minerals in the acid sulfate soils. On incubation, suspension pH tended to increase with decreaseing Eh in the reduction periods. Jarosite formation was favored by maintaining continuous low pH(below 4.0) and high Eh(above 400mV) during the oxidation periods, however, the conditions were not favorable for the soils with $Ca(OH)_2$. Water soluble K increased by reduction but decreased by oxidation, while the jarosite of the soil with $Ca(OH)_2$ was dissolved even under the oxidation conditon, resulting in rapid increase of water soluble K. The water soluble Ca decreased rapidly, indicating that gypsum was formed with $Ca(OH)_2$ during the oxidation periods. The formation of jarosite was favored by the oxidation condition, and hindered by the reduction condition. But the formation of pyrite was favored by reduction and hindered by oxidation. When the troll was treated with $Ca(OH)_2$, Jarosite was dissolved in both oxidized and reduced conditions.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the changing patterns of the available elements by the control of lime addition amount and temperature in Acid Sulfate Soils under the submerged condition. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. pH and contents of available phosphate, soluble silicate, $NH_4-N$, and exchangeable iron in soils were decreased but exchangeable aluminium and manganese, and water soluble sulfur in soils increased after submergence. 2. Lime treatment increased pH, available phosphate, soluble silicate, $NH_4-N$, and water soluble sulfur, but that decreased exchangeable aluminium, iron, and manganese in soils. 3. Treatment with 12me/100gr of Ca as $CaCO_3$, showed the marked effect in increasing the exchangeable aluminium and iron, and increasing pH value to about 6.5 as well as available phosphate and $NH_4-N$. 4. Increases in available phosphate, $NH_4-N$, and exchangeable iron with aging of the soil flooded and lime treated were higher at $35^{\circ}C$ than those at $25^{\circ}C$. 5. Throughout submerged period a significant positive correlation was observed between pH and soluble silicate while the pH has negative correlation with exchangeable elements such as aluminium, iron, and manganese etc.
Sulfate adsorption in forest soils is a process of sulfur dynamics playing an important role in plant uptake, cation movement, acid neutralization capacity and so on. The relationship between sulfate adsorption and some physicochemical properties of four forest soils was investigated. Extractable sulfate contents and sulfate adsorption capacity (SAC) in the forest soils varied much among study sites. Extractable sulfate contents were more in sub-surface soils with lower organic matter and greater Al and Fe oxides than in surface soils. The average contents of $Al_d$ and $Fe_d$ in the sub-surface soils were 8.49 and $12.45g\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. Soil pH, cation exchange capacity and clay content were positively correlated with the extractable sulfate contents and SAC. Organic carbon content, however, was negatively correlated with the extractable sulfate contents, implying the competitive adsorption of sulfate with soil organic matter. Considerably significant correlation was found between inorganic + amorphous Al and Fe oxides and the sulfate adsorption, but crystalline Al and other fractions of Fe oxide showed no correlation. Relatively close relationship between the adsorbed sulfates and soil pH, cation exchange capacity, or amorphous Al oxides indicates that the accelerated soil acidification may substantially reduce the potential for sulfate adsorption contributing to sulfur flux in forest ecosystems.
In order to find out the cause of plant injury, the symptom of plant injury, and contents of element concerned in the plant were analysed. Also, a case study was conducted to find out the factor of plant injury at a agriculture and industry complex in Gyeongsang province in 2004. The distribution of isomeric curve was made with meteorological data, toxic gas concentration exhausted from pollution source. The general symptom of plant injury by ammonia gas was dry and dead of leaves with white color. At low concentration of ammonia gas, plant leaf showed spots of reddish brown. The characteristic of plant injury symptom by hydrogen fluoride gas was that the symptom was appeared at the edge of leaf. The isomeric curve of sulfur dioxide at the region, where the plant was damaged, showed that the area was affected by exhausted gas from the pollution source. Especially, this area was affected more deeply at summer than any other season.
Arsenic and its compounds which is one of the most toxic elements that can be found naturally on earth in small concentrations are used in the production of pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides. Most arsenic that cannot be mobilized easily when it is immobile is also found in conjunction with sulfur in minerals such as arsenopyrite (AsFeS), realgar, orpiment and enargite. In this investigation we observed the leaching of arsenic in soils amended with several levels of gravel size of arsenopyrite collected from a road construction site. Soil and gravel size of arsenopyrite were characterized by chemical and mineralogical analyses. Results of XRF analysis of arsenopyrite indicated that the proportion of arsenate was 0.075% (wt $wt^{-1}$) while the maximum amount of arsenic in soil samples was 251.3 mg $kg^{-1}$. Cumulative amounts of effluent collected from the bottom of the soil column for different mixing rate of the gravel were gradually increased where proportion of the gravel mixed was greater than 70% whereas the effluent was stabilized to the maximum after approximately 45 pore volumes of effluent or greater were collected. The arsenic in the effluent was recovered from the soil columns in which the proportion of arsenopyrite gravel was 60% or greater. The total amount of arsenic recovered as effluent was increased with increasing proportion of gravel in a soil, indicating that the arsenic in the effluent was closely related with gravel fraction of arsenopyrite.
The presence of thiosulfate oxidizing bacteria was examined in rhizosphere soils of 19 economically important plant species belonging to 10 different families. The results showed that the thiosulfate oxidizing bacteria were present in all the tested rhizosphere soils, and the total 32 thiosulfate oxidizing bacteria were recovered. Furthermore, the biochemical characterization revealed that 56% and 44% of the isolates belonged to the obligate chemolithoautotrophs and facultative heterotrophs, respectively. The isolates ATSR15P utilized 19.17 mM of thiosulfate and accumulated 11.65 mM of sulfate in the medium. Concurrently, the decrease in pH of the medium was observed. This study comprehensively demonstrates that the active sulfur oxidation is a ubiquitous phenomenon in the rhizosphere of crop plants in Korea.
Effects of three slow-release nitrogen fertilizers (Sulfur-coated urea, (SCU) Jin Hae Chemical Co. Korea(JHC); Tennessee Valley Authority. U.S.A(TVA); METAP, Japan) on the yield and nitrogen uptake of IR667 (Suwon 213) were investigated comparing with urea split application under the field condition with early and usual saeson cultivation. 1. SCU(JHC) was not superior than urea split application in yield and nitrogen nutrition due to early release of nitrogen. 2. SCU(TVA) outyielded urea split by 10% showed always highest nitrogen content in straw and most balanced relative cumulative curve of nitrogen uptake or dry matter yield. 3. At ear formation stage SCU(TVA) showed specially high nitrogen content which was highly correlated with number of grain per $m^2$ of field. 4. Only SCU(TVA) showed one peak curve of nitrogen uptake rate at ear formation stage while others showed two peak pattern. 5. nitrogen fertilizer recovery of slow-release fertilizers was higher than urea split in early season cultivation and SCU (TVA) (46.0) was higher but SCU(JHC) (38.9) was similar in compare with urea split(37.1) in usual season cultivation. 6. Most promising slow-release nitrogen to match plant requirement seems to be one mixed of various slow-release fertilizers having different release pattern.
For the purpose of investigating the effect of chemical composition of nitrogenous fertilizers such as urea, ammonium sulfate, ammonium phosphate(dibasic) and aqua-ammonia on growth, yield, efficiency and chemical properties of paddy soil this study was carried out at the same nitrogen concentration through field experiment. The results obtained was summarized as follows. 1. Nitrogenous fertilizers had an effect on plant height at heading stage, plant weight at harvest and No. of spikelet per panicle of rice plants in decreasing order: Ammonium sulfate > Diammonium phosphate > Urea > Ammonia water. But they didn't effect on culm length, spike length, dry matter weight, No. of grain per spike, ripening ratio and weight of 1000 grains of rice plants. 2. The absorbed amount of nitrogen and that of sulfur and nitrogen availability were highest in ammonium sulfate application and lowest in ammonia water application and these were positively correlated with yield. 3. The influence of nitrogenous fertilizers on nitrogen and sulfur efficiency and translocation efficiency was insignificant but that of ammonium sulfate on nitrogen efficiency was higher than that of the others. 4. The effect of nitrogenous fertilizers on a basic chemical properties of paddy soil experimented such as pH, C.E.C, exchangeable cation and organic matter was insignificant. But the sulfur content of ammonium sulfate application and phosphorous content of diammonium phosphate application were higher than that of the others.
The study on physico-chemical characteristics of the acid sulfate soil present in Kimhae plain was carried out with 28 surface and subsoils from lower and higher produtive area and two representative profile samples from the areas reclaimed a few decades ago and around 10 years ago respectively. 1. There are no differences in soil texture between lower and higher productive soils being mostly silty clay loam and silty clay. 2. Very significant differences in pH, degree of base saturation and extractable aluminium content are observed; lower pH, lower degree of base saturation and higher aluminium in the lower productive soils and subsoils. The pH and degree of base saturation of these soils are extremely low whereas aluminium content is very high compared to ordinary paddy soil. 3. Cation exchange capacity of these soils are slightly higher than ordinary paddy soils. In higher productive soils, exchangeable calcium and magnesium are of same order, whereas in lower productive soils magnesium content is appreciably higher than calcium. 4. Though the soil is derived from marine and estuarine sediment, the soluble salt content is not high. There are only few lower productive surface soils and subsoils having Ec values of the saturation extracts higher than 4 mmhos but lower than 9 mmhos/cm. 5. Organic matter content of these soils is a bit higher compared to ordinary paddy soils, but, nitrogen content is comparatively low. C/N ratio of these soils is around 12. 6. Sulfur content is considerably higher but oxidizable sulfur is found to be very low. Total sulfur is generally high in subsoils and lower productive soils. 7. Active iron and available silica are slightly higher than ordinary paddy soils but easily reducible manganese is very low. Almost no differences are also observed between lower and higher productive soils. 8. Available phosphorus content is extremely low in particular, regardless of higher or lower productive soils. 9. The two representative profiles from the area of earlier reclamation and recent one show that samples from earlier reclaimed area contain less amount of free acids, sulfur compounds, toxic aluminium and soluble salts etc. than the other. This indicate greater leaching and possible addition of lime for a longer period of time. 10. From the results obtained, it can be concluded the higher productivity of group I soils is due to the greater leaching and neutralisation of acidity by liming materials, It can also be concluded that the productivity of both types can be increased by addition of liming materials and improvement of drainage facilities.
