  • The study thus examined and analyzed 1,478 people aged 65 or older in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 2010 to investigate the effects of differences in the elderly's general characteristics and depression & suicide ideation and in their subjective health perceptions and quality of life on their depression and suicide ideation. As a result, Significant differences in their suicide ideation were also caused by such quality of life variables as ill in bed, exercise capacity, self-management, daily activity, pain and uncomfortableness, and anxiety. The logistic analysis results of depression and suicide ideation according to the degree of subjective health perception show a significant finding that the better health perception they had compared with their very poor subjective health perception, the lower the odds ratio became. In the category of quality of life, only experience of uncomfortableness caused significant results on suicide ideation and depression. The results of the study will be of great use as basic data to intervene in the suicide route of the elderly and take measures to prevent suicide.

  • This study addresses a number of issues related to suicide among older persons in Korea. The study investigates various aspects of elderly's suicide ideation, and how this quality of life and self-esteem impacts on their suicide ideation through depression. For the purpose of the study, the survey was conducted and 8,135 elderly 65 years old and over who reside in Gyeonggi-do participated. The result of the study indicated that quality of life, self-esteem and depression of the elderly showed statistically significant suicide ideation of the elderly. Participants were divided into two groups according to their physical health status. That is, to find out how quality of life and self-esteem of the elderly impact on the suicide ideation directly and indirectly through depression among elderly people with physical disease and no disease. The results showed that depression of the elderly people with physical disease was the most highly significant factors in explaining the elderly's suicidal ideation directly a comparison of elderly people with no physical disease. Therefore, depression is a major mental health problem associated with suicide. Finally, these findings of the study can improve the elderly people's quality of life and reduce suicide ideation.

For these purposes, 1,110 elderly in Chonbuk province were interviewed using structured questionaire. Logistic regression analyses were used to test the association among factors. Major finding of this study are as follow : First, the prevalence of the suicide ideation, plan and attempt was 20.2%, 5.7%, 3.6%. Second, factors for suicide attempt were male sex, the living alone aged, loss of role as a worker, emotional abuse and neglect from family. On the basis of these results, implications for policy and practice are suggested for prevention the suicide of the elderly.

We collected information on 220 elderly individuals(aging over 60), 171 of whom were living alone and 49 of whom were living with their families. The results showed that; 1) number of children, health status, level of stress, and depressive symptoms were all related to the suicide ideation among both groups, and 2) individuals living alone had lower sense of control, were more stressed, and more likely to suffer from depression. Based on these results, various implications were discussed and practical suggestions provided.

Methods: Participants were 201 elderly people living at home in two cities who were receiving home health services from public health centers. Face-to-face interviews were conducted from October in 2013 to April in 2014. Data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 21.0. Results: Subjects' perceived health status had a direct effect on increasing self-esteem and reducing depression. Subjects' self-esteem and depression had a direct effect on suicide ideation. Perceived health status had an indirect effect on suicide ideation that was mediated by self-esteem and depression. Conclusion: Results of this study indicate that to prevent suicide of the elderly, it is critical to increase their health status. Additionally, there is a need to construct and implement strategies to strengthen self-esteem of low-income elderly in order to decrease depression.

  • Using data from 2011 Elderly Living Condition Survey database, this study analyzed risk factors for suicide ideation of Korean elderly persons. The analysis sample consists of 10,003 cases. The main purpose of this research was to explore the effects of social quality factor on suicide ideation of Korean elderly persons. Analysis results show that gender, age, area of residence, living alone, subjective standard of living, activities of daily living(ADLs), and geriatric depression are significant predictors of suicide ideation. Key findings are that social quality factor such as experiencing feeling hurt from others' words and actions like avoiding conversations, disregarding one's opinions, pretending to be not heard, getting irritated, grumbling, etc. has the largest effects on suicide ideation. Analysis results imply that without improving social quality, it would not be possible to lower elderly suicide rate.

  • Elderly suicide problem has become worse in South Korea. With a rapid aging of the population, the trend of suicide among the elderly is expected to accelerate, preventing elderly suicide has been considered an important societal problem. Thus, we aim to investigate various factors that explain suicidal ideation and to develop a predictive model for suicidal ideation in the context of elderly people in South Korea. To this end, this study contributes to addressing the elderly suicide problem. By using seven-year panel data from the Korea Welfare Panel Survey, we extract various potential causal factors for elderly suicidal ideation based on interpersonal theory of suicide and social disorganization theory. Then a panel logit model was employed to assess the impacts of potential factors on suicidal ideation and deep learning and machine learning algorithms were used to develop a predictive model for suicidal ideation of elderly people. The results of our study provide practical implications for preventing elderly suicide by identifying causal factors of suicidal ideation and a high suicidal risk group of the elderly. This study sheds light on synergy of mixed methodology and provides various academic implications.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between anxiety, sleep disturbance, and suicide ideation in the elderly using senior welfare centers and to identify factors influencing suicide ideation. Data were collected from January 6 to February 7, 2020 from 206 elders who analyzed using SPSS/Win 25.0 with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, multiple regression analysis. anxiety, sleep disturbance, suicide ideation were positively correlated. Meanwhile, factor affecting suicide ideation were anxiety(β=.215, p=.001), sleep disturbance(β=.383, p<.001) and the explanatory power of suicide ideation was 27.3%. Therefore, in order to prevent suicide ideation, it will be necessary to develop an intervention program to maintain qualitative sleep and lower anxiety levels.

For elderly men, those aged 75 years or more, had no spouse, and had activity limitations showed a higher suicidal ideation risk. For elderly women, those who had low a education level and were perceived to be unhealthy showed a higher suicidal ideation risk. Conclusion: Nurses should consider sex differences when designing suicide prevention programs for the elderly.
