Chironomid adults were collected by light traps at night, sweeping on grasses, during daytime hours, sweeping of swarming males with an insect net, and aspiration of light-attracted adults using a sucking tube. The collected specimens were slide-mounted and examined. I identified two species new to science, namely Orthocladius manhaei n. sp. and Ablabesmyia jeongi n. sp., and three species for the first time in Korea: Paratrichocladius tamaator Sasa, 1981, Rheocricotopus chalybeatus (Edwards, 1929) and Hayesomyia tripunctata (Goetghebuer, 1922). This is the first report of the genera Rheocricotopus and Hayesomyia in Korea. The genus Hayesomyia in the tribe Pentaneurini of Tanypodinae has a Holarctic distribution with only one species recorded from each of the Palaearctic and Nearctic regions.
An electromyographic analysis of the buccinator muscle was undertaken, by use of surface electrode. Electromyograms were made from 30 subjects with normal dentition during various oral activity, The results were as follows; 1. No buccinator activity was elicited during slowly opening and closing the mouth. 2. The majority of subjects showed buccinator activity while biting hard, protracting the mandible, and retracting the mandible. 3. The buccinator muscle was found to be markedly and consistently active during swallowing, blowing, sucking and masticating. 4. The buccinator activity during pulling the lips against the teeth was of equal potential with pulling the lips laterally. 5. The buccinator muscle on the working side was more active than the buccinator muscle on the balancing side.

A retrospective review of clinical records of 34 cases with polypoid vocal folds who underwent endolaryngeal microsurgery was carried out. The results were followings; 1) The incidence was high in elder age group(mean age : 53.7 years old). 2) Bilateral lesions were much more frequent than unilateral ones(67.6% vs. 32.4%). 3) Nine out of 34 patients had associated local pathologies and nine out of 34 patients had associated systemic pathologies. 4) Smoking appeared to be the most dominant predisposing factor(76.5%). 5) Maximal phonation time was decreased in 10 cases out of 14 cases(71.4%) and phonation quotient was increased in 9 cases out of 14 cases(64.3%). 6) All the cases were treated with sucking technique and the voice quality was improved in 32 cases(94.1%) The average duration for voice improvement was 2.8 months.
In Korea, due to its broad efficacy as a systemic insecticide, imidacloprid has been widely used in rice paddies to control sucking insects, soil insects, and some chewing insects and in apple orchards to control various insects pests. To quantify the imidacloprid residue concentrations, samples are assayed in vitro using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays(ELISA). These assays generally require several hours to perform. As a biosensor, a competitive imidacloprid ELISA was modified to measure insecticide concentrations. It was found that a total assay time of 15 min(10-min antibody-antigen binding, and 5-min substrate development) is sufficient for monitoring imidacloprid concentrations. Further work is needed to improve the sensitivity of the measurement protocol.
The Remora brachyptera and R. osteochir, belonging to the family Echeneidae were collected for the first time off Jeju Island, Korea, in July and August 2013 and off Ganggu-myeon, Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do in June 2014. Remora brachyptera is characterized by a sucker with 16 pairs of disc laminae and a dorsal fin that originates anterior of the origin of the anal fin. Remora osteochir is characterized by a sucker with 18 pairs of disc laminae and a sucking disc that extends beyond the posterior end of the pectoral fin. New Korean names proposed for the species are "Meo-ri-ppal-pan-i" for R. brachyptera and "Ppyeo-dae-ppal-pan-i" for R. osteochir.
Objective: The purpose of this case report was to report the effect of Gamchosasim-tang in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms due to gastric ulcer. Methods: We treated a patient suffering from epigastric pain, sucking sensations in the epigastrium, and nausea using Gamchosasim-tang (甘草瀉心湯) for 35 days. The patient's symptoms were charted and evaluated using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and a gastrointestinal symptom rating scale (GSRS). Results: After treatment, the symptoms related to gastric ulcer were decreased and evaluation using the VAS and GSRS showed improvement in the patient. Conclusion: This study shows that Korean medicine treatment with Gamchosasim-tang may be valuable for relieving gastric ulcer symptoms.
A total of 16 sows (average parity = 3.5 ± 0.10, standard deviation = 2.05) and their newborn pigs (Duroc × [Landrace × Yorkshire], initial body weight 1.53 ± 0.07 kg) were used in a 21-day study. On day 3 of age, piglets along with their dam were divided into two groups: CON and TRT. CON group piglets did not receive any iron injection while, TRT group piglets received 200 mg of injectable iron (GleptoForte) in a single dose. The administration of iron at day-3 of birth improved weaning body weight and overall average daily gain in sucking piglets compared with their control counterparts. For blood criteria, injection of 200 mg of iron improved serum iron values and hematocrit and decreased total iron binding capacity (TIBC) during the day 21 period. In summary, 200 mg iron injection at birth resulted in greater growth performance and blood iron status. These results indicate that providing 200 mg of injectable iron is sufficient to optimize the growth performance and blood iron status of suckling piglets.
Finishing is usually accomplished about four to seven months before the removal of orthodontic appliance in order to achieve ideal occlusion and excellent aesthetics. This process, called finishing, is the key to obtain excellent final results. Some of orthodontists believe it can be accomplished at the final stage of orthodontic treatment, and they complete it without their special rationale and criteria for finishing. However, it should be considered as a part of the total treatment plan from the beginning to end, and a guideline for finishing, which is based on rationale and criteria for the removal of orthodontic appliance, is needed to obtain the desired results. The guideline should include a checklist for finishing. This checklist is divided into four categories: occlusal, aesthetic, periodontal, and habitual factors. Occlusal fators include alignment, marginal ridge discrepancy, interproximal contact, anterior inclination, posterior inclination, over-jet over-bite, arch fen and functional occlusion. Aesthetic factors include gingival form, crown fen crown width, and crown length. Periodontal factors include root angulation, bone level, and black hole in periodontal factors. Habitual factors consist of mouth breathing, tongue position at rest, tongue thrust, lip biting, nail biting, and finger sucking

As increasing concerns about potential risks and hazards in children's products, the laws and regulations for heavy metals and phthalate retardants contained in the children's products have been reinforced in many countries. Especially, in Korea, environment and health laws and regulations for children's products was declared in 2009. This study was researched in terms of contents and migration of phthalates and heavy metals in 124 children's products sold in the Korean market. The results for contents of heavy metals showed that 123 products contained different 14 heavy metals depending on kinds of products. As the results of migration by sucking, the heavy metals in the products such as black, plastic dolls, wood toys, and bottom mat for swimming were transferred into extraction solution. Ba, Cu, Zn, and Sn were transferred from most of these products into the extraction solution and Co, Ni and Pb were additionally transferred into several products. As the results of migration through a skin, while Ba, Cu, and Zn were transferred from most products containing the heavy metals, as for accessories, Cr, Ba, Ni, Zn, and Cu were migrated. The results of contents of phthalates presented that 21 products contained DBP, DEHP and DINP. Only 2 products showed the migration of DEHP by sucking. DEHP in most products were transferred and DBP for 2 products and DINP for 7 products were migrated.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the difference of muscular activities of the tongue and lip muscles between anterior open-bite and normal occlusion during various function. Thirty eight subjects of 12.1-39.6 years were employed in this study : Eighteen subjects were anterior open-bites and tweenty subjects were normal occlusions. During rest position, maximum effort of lip sealing, command swallow of saliva and sucking & swallowing of juice, the electromyographic datas of the genioglossus, superior longitudinal muscle of tongue, upper and lower orbicularis oris were recorded and integrated with Medelec MS 25 electromyographic machine. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken on all subjects for the analysis of tongue posture and size. All data were recored and statistically processed. The findings of this study can be summerized as follows : 1. During the rest position, muscular activity of tongue was higher than that of lip muscle in open-bite, but no difference in normal occlusion group. 2. During the swallowing of juice, the activity of orbicularis oris was higher than that of genioglossus in open-bite. But the normal occusion was showed higher activity of tongue during the swallowing of juice. 3. The open-bite, compared to the normal occlusion, had higher value of tongue muscle activity during the rest position. 4. Compared to normal occlusion group, the open-bite had higher value of lip muscle activity during the sucking and swallowing of juice. 5. During the command swallow of saliva, the normal occlusion was showed harmonious swallowing pattern, but the open-bite showed much variation and disharmony in muscular contraction sequence, tended to absent of lip muscle activity. 6. At the lateral cephalometric radiographs, compared to the normal occlusion, the open-bite was showed lower tongue posture. But no difference was found in intermaxillary space. It is suggested that the open-bite, compared to the normal occlusion, had higher muscular activity of tongue during the rest position and various functions, showed lower tongue posture on the lateral cephalogram. In the development of anterior open-bite malocclusion, these factors may be an etiologic factor.
