As a carrier of malaria and sneak of blood, mosquitoes are regarded as an unpleasant insect. However, there are novel phenomena that happen inside a mosquito. Among them, we focused on the blood sucking function of a female mosquito. The main objective of this study was to investigate the mosquito's pumping mechanism in order to resolve the problem encountered when we inject or transport biologic fluids into a micro-chip. To analyze the pumping mechanism, we visualized the blood sucking process inside a female mosquito. Flow characteristics of blood flow in a proboscis were investigated experimentally using a micro-PIV velocity field measurement technique. The anatomical variation of head, thorax, abdomen which work as pumps and valves, was visualized using the syncrotron X-ray micro-imaging technique.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the effects of non-nutritive sucking on physiological and behavioral state of pre-term infants during tube feeding. Method: This nonequivalent, non-synchronized experimental study included 50 pre-term infants. An attempt was made to match gestational age and birth weight of infants in each group. Infants in the experimental group were given a pacifier 2 minutes before, during, and for 2 minutes after tube feeding. Infants in the control group did not get a pacifier. Both groups were tested at three stages for changes in the physiologic state and behavioral state - 2 minutes before, during, and 2 minutes after feeding. Date was analyzed with SPSS WIN 10.0 using an $X^2$-test, t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA. Result: Heart rates and oxygen saturation levels of the two groups were significantly different(P=.001, P=.000). The behavioral states of the two groups were significantly different during and post feeding(P=.000, P=.000). Conclusion: This result suggests non-nutritive sucking by using a pacifier is an effective intervention for pre-term infants during tube feeding.
The foraging behavior of the beauty goby, Pterogobius zacalles, was studied at Mutu Bay, Aomori province, Japan. P. zacalles harvested invertebrates prey from benthic substrates by using two distinct foraging modes: picking substrate among boulders and sucking surface of boulder. Among others, picking substrate among boulders was primarily used foraging mode. The foraging modes of P. zacalles were followed by three stages: searching for prey, feeding and chewing. For foraging, it takes less time to suck out the surface of boulder than pick up substrate among boulders, because the resting site of P. zacalles is close to the place where they do sucking. The diets of P. zacalles primarily consisted of benthic amphipods regardless of their foraging modes. Only the difference was that they can get bigger amphipods when they did picking rather than sucking. Even though it needs more time and energy to do picking, P. zacalles was compensated by getting a high-calorie diet eventually, therefore prey size can be the determinant of their foraging modes.
Purpose: This study was done to test the effects of Oketani breast massage on breast pain and breast milk pH of mothers, and sucking speed of neonates. Methods: A nonequivalent control group and a pretest-posttest design was used. Postpartum mothers complaining of breast pain were recruited at a postpartum care center. The application of Oketani breast massage by an Oketani massage therapist was the experimental treatment. The control group received the conventional massage technique from a nurse at the postpartum care centre. The collected data were analysed using a $x^2$-test and a t-test with the SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Results: The participants were homogeneous in age, gestation period, and birth weight. Breast pain (t=8.384, p<.001) was significantly relieved, and breast milk pH (t=4.793, p<.001) was significantly increased in the experimental group compared to the control group. The sucking speed of the neonates in the experimental group was significantly increased compared to the control group (t=9.920, p<.001). Conclusion: These findings indicate that Oketani breast massage is effective in relieving breast pain and increasing breast milk pH as well as the sucking speed of neonates.
Purpose: To investigate the effect of nonnutritive sucking(NNS) on the heart rate, oxygen saturation, and behavioral state of premature infants. Method: From December 15, 2004 to February 15, 2005, 20 premature infants hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care units were assigned to an experimental group (10), or a control group (10). Circular pacifiers for premature infants (Johnson, U.S.A.), which had been packed with $2{\times}2$ gauzes to create a vacuum, were used for 5 minutes, one hour after feeding for 5 days. Heart rates and oxygen saturation were checked every minute for 10 minutes once a day and behavioral states were monitored through video recording at the same time. Results: Changes in heart rate, oxygen saturation and behavioral state were found to show significant differences between the experimental group and the control group according to the point in time, and interactions were found between the group and the point of time. However, for behavioral state, no significant difference was found between the experimental group and the control group after the NNS was removed. Conclusion: From the results of this study it is possible to conclude that NNS is a positive intervention to bring about increased oxygen saturation and soothed behavioral state for premature infants.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the neonatal birth weight, birth height, Apgar scores, sucking power, and digestion difficulties between smoking and non-smoking women following cesarean birth. This study analyzed the effects of smoking on the neonatal health status in pregnant women to provide fundamental data for smoking prevention education for women of childbearing ages and non-smoking practice protocols for pregnant women with smoking. Methods: A comparative survey design was used. Fifty-four newborn infants of pregnant women with smoking and seventy-four newborn infants of pregnant women with non-smoking participated in this study. The scores of neonatal birth weight, birth height, Apgar scores, sucking power, and digestion difficulties were assessed. Data were analyzed using SPSS Windows 15.0 program. Results: Smoking in pregnant women leads to the decrease of birth weight (F=4.75, p=.030) and birth height (F=14.19, p<.001), negative effects on the Apgar scores (F=36.02, p<.001) and sucking power (t=-4.26~-5.60, p<.001), and digestion difficulties ($x^2$=6.72, p=.010) of neonates. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that smoking in pregnant women leads to the decrease of fetus development. These findings would be utilized for the development of not only smoking prevention programs for women of childbearing ages but also prenatal education programs for pregnant women.
The present study was initiated to find out the insect vector of mulberry dwarf phytoplasma. Among the collected insects from mulberry cultivation region, the sucking insects (Hishimonas sellatus, Bothrogonia japonica and Balclutha punctata) were selected for transmission of mulberry dwarf phytoplasma. Sucking insects, H. sellatus and B. punctata successfully transmitted phytoplasma to healthy seedling mulberry and periwinkle plants by inoculation-feeding. Typical dwarf symptom was observed in mulberry tree, but very slender twigs on stem and formatted small leaves were found on periwinkle plants, which are typical witches' broom symptoms. The phytoplasmas were detected in all samples exception sucking insects B. japonica using phytoplasma universal primer pair R16F2n/R2.

This study was conducted to investigate the relations between brown planthopper (BPH, Nilapavata lugens) resistance and specific organic acids (oxalic acid, silicic acid, and trans-aconitic acid) known as BPH sucking inhibitors on different rice varieties and/or lines. There were no specific relations between BPH resistance and the contents of oxalic and silicic acids in the rice plant tissues. However, the stronger the BPH resistance was occurred, the higher the content of trans-aconitic acid was contained in the rice plants. The relations between the injury rate of rice plant by BPH and the content of trans-aconitic acid in the rice plants were negatively correlated, which were -0.84 and -0.82 at 30 and 60 days after seeding, respectively. Therefore, the content of trans-aconitic acid in rice plant tissues might be utilized as an index for improving BPH resistance of rice varieties.
Purpose : This study examined the occurrence of oxygen desaturation events during nutritive sucking in premature infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and its effects on feeding and growth outcomes until 4 months of corrected age (CA). Methods : Thirty-four premature infants with BPD free from major cardiac, gastrointestinal, respiratory anomalies were included. By reviewing medical records, clinical characteristics, feeding conditions at 36 weeks of postmenstrual age (PMA), we focused on oxygen desaturation, and short-term outcomes in 14 infants with no or mild desaturation (group A) and in 20 infants with moderate or severe desaturation (group B). Results : Group B had lower birth weight and shorter gestational age at birth, longer duration of hospitalization, was discharged at higher weeks of PMA, and needed ventilatory assist and oxygen supplementation longer than group A (P<0.05). Group B started nutritive sucking later, with a greater decrease in $SpO_2$ during sucking, being more indicative of feeding problems at 40 weeks of PMA, but not at 4 months of CA. Percent of infant needing oxygen supplementation and percent of infants with growth failure were not different between groups at 40 weeks of PMA and 4 months of CA. Body weight and growth velocity differences noted at 40 weeks of PMA became insignificant at 4 months of CA. Conclusion : The severity of desaturation during nutritive sucking in premature infants with BPD influenced the infant's feeding and growth at 40 weeks of PMA. However, it disappeared at 4 months of CA.
