  • This paper is concerned with the modification of multidisciplinary feasible formulation for MDO problems using the integrated coupled approximate models. A drawback of conventional MDFs is the numerical difficulty in decomposing the design variables and deriving the coupled equations of state. To overcome such a drawback of conventional methods, the coupling in analysis and design is resolved by approximating the state variables in each discipline by the response surface method and by modifying the optimization formulation using the corresponding integrated coupled approximate models. The validity, reliability and effectiveness of the proposed method are illustrated and verified through two optimization problems, a mathematical MDF problem and the multidisciplinary optimum design of suspension unit of wheeled armored vehicle.

  • A ductility inverse-mapping method for SDOF systems including passive dampers is proposed which enables one to find the maximum acceleration of ground motion for the prescribed maximum response deformation. In the conventional capacity spectrum method, the maximum response deformation is computed through iterative procedures for the prescribed maximum acceleration of ground motion. This is because the equivalent linear model for response evaluation is described in terms of unknown maximum deformation. While successive calculations are needed, no numerically unstable iterative procedure is required in the proposed method. This ductility inverse-mapping method is applied to an SDOF model of bilinear hysteresis. The SDOF models without and with passive dampers (viscous, viscoelastic and hysteretic dampers) are taken into account to investigate the effectiveness of passive dampers for seismic retrofitting of building structures. Since the maximum response deformation is the principal parameter and specified sequentially, the proposed ductility inverse-mapping method is suitable for the implementation of the performance-based design.

  • This paper deals with the design of a reduced-order stabilizing controller for the linear system. The coupled lineal matrix inequality (LMI) problem subject to a rank condition is solved by a sequential semidefinite programming (SDP) approach. The nonconvex rank constraint is incorporated into a strictly linear penalty function, and the computation of the gradient and Hessian function for the Newton method is not required. The penalty factor and related term are updated iteratively. Therefore the overall procedure leads to a successive LMI relaxation method. Extensive numerical experiments illustrate the proposed algorithm.

  • Nonuniform transmission lines(NTLs) with the desired frequency response can be realized by synthesizing the potential from the coupled mode Zakharov-Shabat(ZS) equation in the one-dimensional inverse scattering problem. In this study, an efficient synthesis method using the ZS equations is presented for NTLs with arbitrarily specified reflection coefficients which take the restricted potential. This method lessens the line length which plague conventional design schemes using specific windows for reflection coefficients. Furthermore solving the ZS inverse transform problem is simplified by adopting the successive approach instead of the conventional iterative method. The proposed method is compared with the conventional method using specific windows by applying to design of dispersive NTL filters, and verified by two-port analysis through the chain matrix.
