  • A subway in Seoul has had a major role of public transportation after the opening of Seoul Subway Line 1 on August 15, 1974 and it has reached 34.7% of the transportation of Seoul citizens. The extended length of the subway system suppled with DC power in Korea is about 500km. In this system, the devices which are proper for regenerative power system are being required because of changeover from old braking and ATS signal system to regenerative braking and ATO signal system. In this paper, we reviewed the safety standards for the insulated hangers in overhead contact line. These hangers which have depended on foreign imports are being developed in Korea considering ease of demand and supply and economic effects.

  • In present, most of metallic structures(gas pipeline, oil pipeline, water pipeline, etc) are running parallel with subway and power line in seoul. Moreover subway system and power line make a stray current due to electrical corrosion on metallic structures. The owner of metallic structures has a burden of responsibility for the protection of corrosion and the prevention against big accident such as gas explosion or soil pollution and so on. So, they have to measure and analyze the data about P/S(Pipe to Soil) potential due to stray current of subway system. So, we have developed the Real-time Wireless Remote Monitoring System for Stray Current of Subway System. In this system, the permanent buried type reference electrode is necessary. In this paper, results of development of buried type reference electrode using porous ceramic$({\alpha}-Al_{2}O_{3})$ are presented.

  • This paper is to introduce a more effective and flexible restoration algorithm composed to the fault preventing and restoring system now in use. This was possible by considering the changes that can occur by the proper or the improper run of the Feeder, which the power system restoration method now using didn't consider. The new algorithm uses the method minimizing the loss with respect to the load changes occuring when the power system is restored, rather than just simply following the SOP that is only composed of a single Feeder On/off combination. This can present the more effective power system running method for the safer subway running and passenger transport, by giving the system operator the chance to choose between the SOP and the minimum loss method.

  • In Korea, new total energy-saving solution has planned to build test-bed in underground subway station. Breaking energy is one of the most energy saving method in railway, but it has not be fully used up for economical purpose. This paper demonstrates on energy saving technology application including breaking energy and heating energy to underground subway station. It also offer solution of optimization of power energy flow. Moreover, economic feasibility analysis performed for undergound test bed constuction.

  • A passive RF smart card incorporating a non volatile memory element is powered by inductive coupling to a proximately located RF reader. Therefore, the power consumption in the smart card should be low. In this study, we designed the low power passive RF smart card that is operated at 125kHz to apply to the subway ticket system.

Lightning Protection of Signalling Equipments at Subway Car Depot by Equi-potential Bonding (지하철 차량기지에서의 등전위 본딩에 의한 신호시스템 낙뢰보호대책)

  • Signalling equipments at railroad sites are widely exposed to high voltage lightning surges. This paper presents a lightning protection system for the signalling equipments at subway car depots. The main features of the system are as follows : (1)the common grounding system between power system grounds and the signaling system grounds, (2)physical and chemical methods to reduce grounding resistivity, (3)rearrangement of lightning rods based on the rolling bal1 theory, (4)equi-potential bonding networks to minimize the potential differences between the equipments grounds. The system has been constructed at six subway car depots in Seoul metropolitan area and it is measured that the grounding resistivity are reduced to 0.266 ohms and the potential differences between devices are reduced to a negligible quantity. After the construction of the systems, it has not been reported the break-down of the signalling equipments caused by lighting surges.

Network Betweenness Centrality and Passenger Flow Analysis of Seoul Metropolitan Subway Lines (서울 수도권 지하철망의 호선별 망 매개 중심성과 승객 흐름 분석)

  • Using network betweenness centrality we attempt to analyze the characteristics of Seoul metropolitan subway lines. Betweenness centrality highlights the importance of a node as a transfer point between any pairs of nodes. This 'transfer' characteristic is obviously of paramount importance in transit systems. For betweenness centrality, both traditional betweenness centrality measure and weighted betweenness centrality measure which uses monthly passenger flow amount between two stations are used. By comparing traditional and weighted betweenness centrality measures of lines characteristics of passenger flow can be identified. We also investigated factors which affect betweenness centrality. It is the number of passenger who get on or get off that significantly affects betweenness centrality measures. Through correlation analysis of the number of passenger and betweenness centrality, it is found out that Seoul metropolitan subway system is well designed in terms of regional distribution of population. Four measures are proposed which represent the passenger flow characteristics. It is shown they do not follow Power-law distribution, which means passenger flow is relatively evenly distributed among stations. It has been shown that the passenger flow characteristics of subway networks in other foreign cities such as Beijing, Boston and San Franciso do follow power-law distribution, that is, pretty much biased passenger flow traffic characteristics. In this study we have also tried to answer why passenger traffic flow of Seoul metropolitan subway network is more homogeneous compared to that of Beijing.

  • Since Seoulmetro built the first line of electric railway at seoul 1974, the passengers of railway have been increased rapidly, and electric railway requires more electric power for the greater capacity of transport. It is important that we prevent the accidents related with the subway, because all systems of subway are constructed in artificial underground structure. Since the previous versions of the earth system were built to meet the old standards of the electric facility for the lightning, some accidents related with the DC earth fault are causing secondary damages to the electric equipments. So, the old grounding system must be improved, and new standards of grounding system are required. We compare the grounding systems of the domestic railway corporations and the accidents that are related with the grounding systems. And we give ideas to improve the grounding systems and present standards which are suitable to electric railway.
