  • A seasonal characteristic of marine environment and fish assemblages in the coastal waters of Jeju Island were determined using samples collected by a trammel net in from 2012 to 2013. Annual mean temperature and salinity were $18.8^{\circ}C$, 33.7psu (2012) and $18.8^{\circ}C$, 33.8psu (2013) which shows stable water mass. nutrient concentrations represent that dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) ranged from 0.030 to 0.217mg/L, dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) from 0.002 to 0.010mg/L, and silicate ($SiO_2$) from 0.096 to 0.292mg/L. Chlorophyll a concentrations of phytoplankton ranged from 0.905 to $1.125{\mu}g/L$ were appeared the highest in summer and the lowest in winter. Suspended Solid(SS) concentrations ranged from 1.200 to 2.100mg/L (mean, 1.634mg/L) were appeared the highest in autumn and the lowest in spring. During the survey period, a total of 83 species (48 families and 12 orders) of fishes were identified, Perciformes and Scorpaeniformes accounted for 63.9% of the total number. The number of species was higher in summer than in winter, showing a peak in summer at 57 species and a low in winter at 47 species. The number of individuals and the biomass peaked in summer at 694 individuals and 151.9kg, and were the lowest in autumn at 466 individuals and 106.5kg. The diversity index, evenness index and richness index were appeared 2.92~3.14, 0.75~0.83 and 7.06~8.56 at each stations. the dominance index were appeared highest in spring and summer, were appeared the lowest in winter and autumn. The Filefish (Stephanolepis cirrhifer), Bluestriped angelfish (Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis), Marbled rockfish (Sebastiscus marmoratus), Rabbit fish (Siganus fuscescens), Blackfin sweeper (Pempheris japonica) were dominant species, which occurred abundantly during the entire survey period. The subtropical fishes were identified total of 41 species (49.4%) and the number of species was higher in summer at 29 (50.9%) species and a low in winter at 20 (42.6%) species. • The feeding habits of Sebastiscus marmoratus collected from the Western Coastal Waters of Jeju Island between June 2008 and July 2009 were studied based on examination of the stomach contents. A total 254 individuals of S. marmoratus ranged from 13.2 to 29.6cm (mean 20.7cm) in Standard length (SL). S. marmoratus consumed mainly teleosts such as Chromis notata and Sebastes inermis. Its diet also includes shrimps and crabs. The individuals smaller than 15cm SL consumed mainly shrimps, but on the other hand the individuals larger than 25cm SL consumed mainly fishes. The proportion of fish consumption increased with increasing size of S. marmoratus.

  • The fish fauna was investigated around Dokdo in the East Sea from Oct. 15 to Oct. 16, 1997 and May 12 to 15, 1999 Fishes found in this area were 63 species in 28 families : 58 species of 25 families in autumn (Oct., 1997), and 30 species of 15 families in spring (May, 1999). Apogon cookii and Tripterigion bapturum were unrecorded species in Korea. The 11 species of subtropical fishes including Pomacentridae (4 species) and Apogonidae (3 species) occupied about 20% of the fish fauna in autumn, whereas these subtropical fishes did not occur in spring.

  • Abundances of small fishes that utilized seagrass meadows of Redfish Bay, Texas, were analyzed quantitatively to determine monthly changes of this concentrated subtropical fish community during 1982-1983. an effective quantitative sampler, a 1-㎡ thrown cage, yielded a total of 10,223 fishes that comprised 40 species in 23 families, with average total densities about 15 fishes/㎡ in shoalgrass meadow and 6 fishes/㎡ in turtlegrass meadow. The darter goby, pinfish, code goby, and Gulf pipefish were the four most abundant species, and accounted for approximately 85% of the number of fish collected. However, the two different meadows had different relative abundances of fishes. The darter goby numerically dominated shallower shoalgrass meadow, while the pinfish and code goby were the commonest fishes in deeper turtlegrass meadow. Seasonal changes in both species composition and abundances of fish populations were major characteristics in these subtropical seagrass medows. Peak abundance of total fishes occurred during spring, with a secondary peak in fall. Lowest abundance of total fishes occurred in winter. Each abundant species showed its own seasonal abundance pattern, and had a peak abundance 1-3 months separated from other species, with some overlap of increased larval recruitment. Such distinct seasonal abundance patterns with different times of peak recruitment. Such distinct seasonal abundance patterns with different times of peak recruitment among fish species seem to permit use of the seagrass habitats with reduced, seasonal competition.

  • The fish assemblage characteristics in the coastal waters of Sinchang-ri in the Western region of Jeju Island were determined using trammel net samples collected from 2012 to 2022. During the survey period, 81 fish species (43 families, 12 orders) were identified. Tetraodontiformes (4 families, 9 species) and Perciformes (26 families, 57 species) accounted for 84% of the total number. Annual species variation was highest in 2017 and 2019 (36 species) and lowest in 2015 (26 species). Seasonal species variation was higher in summer (peak, 58 species) than winter (peak, 41 species). The number of individuals (1,509) and biomass (446.5 kg) peaked in August (summer) and were lowest in February (winter; 415 individuals, and 150.7 kg). 41 (50.6%) subtropical fish species were identified, and the number of species was highest in 2020 {21 (61.8%) and lowest in 2014, 2017 [16-18 (47.1-47.4%)]}. Subtropical fish species, individuals and biomass were significantly correlated with environmental factors (summer temperatures) at the sampling sites. Scarbreast tuskfish Choerodon azurio, balloon fish Diodon holocanthus, flag fish Goniistius zonatus, bluestriped angelfish Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis, hairy stingfish Scorpaenopsis cirrhosa, threeline grunt Parapristipoma trilineatum, and blackfin sweeper Pempheris japonica were the dominant species of subtropical fish in the study sites.

  • The survey was conducted to find out the temporal variation of the fish species in the eelgrass beds in Punghwa-ri, Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do from April 2021 to March 2022. In comparison with the results of previous study conducted 10 years ago, there was a significant difference in species composition and dominant species. In addition, this study found that subtropical fish species such as Siganus fuscescens, Plotosus lineatus, Petroscirtes breviceps, which were not reported in the previous study.
