Gas submerged jet is an outstanding thermohydraulic phenomenon in pool scrubbing of fission products during a severe nuclear accident. Experiments were performed on the hydraulic characteristics in the ranges of air mass flux 0.1-1400 kg/m2s and nozzle diameter 10-80 mm. The results showed that the dependence of inlet pressure on the mass flux follows a power law in subsonic jets and a linear law in sonic jets. The effect of nozzle submerged depth was negligible. The isolated bubbling regime, continuous bubbling regime, transition regime, and jetting regime were observed in turn, as the mass flux increased. In the bubbling regime and jetting regime, the air volume fraction distribution was approximately symmetric in space. Themelis model could capture the jet trajectory well. In the transition regime, the air volume fraction distribution loses symmetry due to the bifurcated secondary plume. The Li correlation and Themelis model showed sufficient accuracy for the prediction of jet penetration length.
We calculate the coordinates of an axisymmetric nozzle with a central body. This nozzle ensures a transonic flow with a plane sound surface, which is orthogonal to the symmetry axis and has a wall kink at the sonic point, The Chaplygin transformation in the subsonic part of the flow leads the Dirichlet problem for a system of nonlinear equations. The definition domain of the solution in the velocity-hodograph plane is taken as a rectangle. This enables one to obtain the nozzle with a monotonic distribution of velocity along its subsonic part. In the nonlinear differential equation, the linear Chaplygin operator for plane flows is separated, which allows the iterative calculation of the solution. The supersonic part of the nozzle is calculated under the assumption that the flow at the nozzle exit is uniform and parallel to the symmetry axis; i.e., the supersonic jet outflows to the submerged space with the same pressure. The calculation is performed by the characteristic method. The exact solution of Tricomi equation for near-sonic flows with the straight sonic line is used to 'move away' the sound plane. The velocity distribution alone the supersonic part of the nozzle is also monotonic, which ensures the absence of the boundary-layer separation and, therefore, the adequacy of the ideal-gas model. calculations show that the flow in the supersonic part of the nozzle is continuous (compression shocks are absent)

The spray plume characteristics of liquid water jet injected into subsonic cross-flow at 42 m/s were experimentally investigated. Nozzle has a 1.0 m diameter and L/D=5. Droplet sizes, velocities, volume flux were measured at each downstream area of the injector exit using phase Doppler particle anemometry. Measuring probe position is moved with 3-way transversing machine. Experimental results indicate that SMD is varied from 75 to $120{\mu}m$ distribution and it is uncertain layer structure. SMD peaks at the top of the spray plume. This phenomenon is related to the momentum exchange between column waves and cross-flow stream. Droplet vector velocities were varied from 11.5 to 33 m/s. A higher-velocity region can be identified in down edge region at Z/D : 40, 70 and 100. Lower-velocity region were observed on bottom position of the spray plume. Volume flux is a criterion to the droplet concentration. All volume flux distribution has a same structure that continuously decreases from the center region to the edge of the plume. Z/D : 20 is spatially less concentrated than in Z/D : 100.
This paper is studied to investigate the effect of slits and swirl vanes on the main flow fields of a gun-type gas burner through X-Y plane and Y-Z plane respectively by using X-probe from hot-wire anemometer system. This experiment was carried out with flow rate $450{\ell}/min$ in respective burner models installed in the test section of a subsonic wind tunnel. The burner models with only slits and only swirl vanes respectively were made by modifying original gun-type gas burner. The fast jet flow spurted from slits played a role such as an air-curtain because it encircled rotational flow by swirl vanes and drives mixed main flow to axial direction. As a result, the gun-type gas burner had a wider flow range up to about Y/R=1.5 deviated from slits and maintains a comparatively large velocity in the central part of burner within the range of about X/R=2.5. Therefore, it was very desirable that swirl vanes were installed within slits in gun-type gas burner in order to control the main flow fields effectively.

The spray cross-section characteristics of two-phase spray that using external-mixing nozzle injected into a subsonic cross flow were experimentally studied with various ALR ratio that is $0{\sim}59.4%$. Suction type wind tunnel was used and experiments were conducted to ambient environment. Several plain orifice nozzles with L/d of 30 and orifice diameter of 0.5 mm and orifice length 1.5 mm were tested. Free stream velocity profiles at the injection location were measured using hot wire. Spray images were captured to study collision point and column trajectory. Phase Doppler particle analyzer(PDPA) was utilized to quantitatively measuring droplet SMD, volume flux. Measuring probe of PDPA positions was moved 3-way transverse machine. SMD distributions were layered structure and peaked at the top of the spray plume and low value at bottom of the spray. Volume flux of spray was distributed to the two side region and volume flux quantity decreased when ALR ratio increased. It was found that the perpendicularly injected two-phase spray jet of external mixing into a cross flow showing that mistlike spray moved away from the test section bottom region.
Ejector system is a device to transport a low-pressure secondary flow by using a high-pressure primary flow. Ejector system is, in general, composed of a primary nozzle, a mixing section, a casing part for suction of secondary flow and a diffuser. It can induce the secondary flow or affect the secondary chamber pressure by both shear stress and pressure drop which are generated in the primary jet boundary. Ejector system is simple in construction and has no moving parts, so it can not only compress and transport a massive capacity of fluid without trouble, but also has little need for maintenance. Ejectors are widely used in a range of applications such as a turbine-based combined-cycle propulsion system and a high altitude test facility for rocket engine, pressure recovery system, desalination plant and ejector ramjet etc. The primary interest of this study is to set up an applicable model and operating conditions for an ejector in the condition of sonic and subsonic, which can be extended to the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Experimental and theoretical investigation on the sonic and subsonic ejectors with a converging-diverging diffuser was carried out. Optimization technique and numerical simulation was adopted for an optimal geometry design and satisfying the required performance at design point of ejector for hydrogen recirculation. Also, some sonic and subsonic ejectors with the function of changing nozzle position were manufactured precisely and tested for the comparison with the calculation results.

The jet structure issuing from a conventional convergent nozzle of variable expansion rate is compared with the result from the nozzle of a constant expansion rate using a normal type annular slit. In experiments, to investigate the jet characteristics between the two cases of jet, the mean velocity of nozzle exit is fixed to be 90m/s, the pressures along the jet axis and radial directions are measured by a scanning valve system moving with 3-axis auto-traverse unit, and the velocity distribution obtained by calculation from the measured static and total pressures is compared. Also to obtain the highly stable and convergence jets, it is turned out that the flow through a nozzle of constant expansion rate using the Coanda effect with an annular slit is the most preferable than that case through variable expansion rate nozzle. Furthermore, it is found that the pressure drop along the nozzle for the constant expansion rate nozzle is small relatively against to the case of variable expansion rate nozzle.

Problems created by supersonic jet impinging on solid objects or ground arise in a variety of situations. For example multi-stage rocket separation, deep-space docking, V/STOL aircraft, jet-engine exhaust, gas-turbine blade, terrestrial rocket launch, and so on. These impinging jet flows generally contain a complex structures. (mixed subsonic and supersonic regions, interacting shocks and expansion waves, regions of turbulent shear layer) This paper describes experimental works on the phenomena (surface pressure distribution, flow visualization) when underexpanded supersonic jets impinge on the perpendicular, inclined plate using a supersonic cold-(low system. The used supersonic nozzle is convergent-divergent type, exit Mach number 2, The maximum on the plate when it was inclined was much larger than perpendicular plate, owing to high pressure recoveries through multiple shocks. Surface pressure distribution as to underexpanded ratio showed similar patterns together.

The purpose of this investigation is to explore the possibility of using artificial mechanical means for excitation of shear layers with application in swirling jet mixing enhancement. For this purpose, a mechanical excitation device was designed and fabricated. The major system components consist of two subsonic nozzles, one swirl generator, and the excitation device. The experiments were carried out at various helical excitation modes; i.e., m=+0, m=$\pm$1, m=$\pm$2, m=$\pm$3, and m=$\pm$4. Axial mean velocity measurements were made with plane and helical wave excitation using a hot-wire anemometer. The results are compared with the baseline (plane-wave excitation) at various helical modes. The acquired data is presented in 3-D mesh plots and 2-D contour plots. It was observed that new device was effective in excitation of the helical instability waves and resulting in mixing enhancement of the swirling jet.
Spray and combustion characteristics of a dump-type ram-combustor equipped with a V-gutter flame holder were experimentally investigated. Spray penetrations with a change in airstream velocity, air stream temperature, and dynamic pressure ratio were measured to clarify the spray characteristics of a liquid jet injected into the subsonic vitiated airstream, which maintains a highly uniform velocity and temperature. An empirical equation was modified from Inamura's equation to compensate for experimental conditions. In the case of insufficient penetration, the flame in the ram-combustor was unstable, and vice versus in the case of sufficient penetration. When the flame holder was not equipped, the temperature at the center of the ram-combustor had a tendency to decrease due to the low penetration and insufficient mixing. Therefore, the temperature distribution was slanted to the low wall of the ram-combustor. These trends gradually disappeared as the length of the combustor became longer and the flame holder was equipped. Combustion efficiency increased when the length of the combustor was long and the flame holder was equipped. Especially, the effect of the flame holder was more dominant than that of the combustor length in light of combustion efficiency.
