Muscle reduction owing to aging causes changes in physical function among the elderly. Fitness compression wear reduces fatigue by compressing the main muscles, expanding blood vessels, and rapidly discharging lactic acid. The effect of clothing pressure when wearing fitness compression wear for the elderly was objectively and subjectively evaluated for six women aged 55-64 years. The evaluation clothes were three types of tops and bottoms, one type of design (A) preferred among the existing compression wear, and two types of design (B and C). The objective evaluation items included clothing pressure, blood flow, surface temperature, and subjective satisfaction. It was found that clothing A had the highest clothing pressure in the straight posture and five fitness movements. Blood flow increased the most when wearing the evaluation clothing. The surface temperature was found to be the highest for clothing C, and subjective satisfaction was found to be the best when wearing evaluation clothing B. If the tensile strength was low and the tensile elongation was high, as in evaluation clothing B, it was recognized as appropriate clothing pressure, and the subject was subjectively satisfied. When manufacturing fitness compression wear in the future, it will be possible to increase users' objective and subjective satisfaction with wearing it, if the incision of the garment were placed at the location of the line of non-extension (LoNE), and appropriate material characteristics are applied.
This study analyzed a subject's body reaction and subjective sensation when wearing a gait-assistive rehabilitation robot. The research method measured skin and clothing surface temperatures for 'seating-standing' and 'walking in place' exercises after wearing a gait-assistive rehabilitation robot. In addition, subjective sensation and satisfaction were evaluated on a 7-point Likert scale. The study results showed that the average skin temperature during exercise while wearing the gait-assistive rehabilitation robot was within a comfortable range. However, during the 'seating-standing' exercise, the skin temperature was slightly lowered. Additionally, the clothing surface temperature tended to be lower than the pre-exercise temperature after all exercises. The subjective sensation evaluation results showed that the wear comfort of the waist part was low during mobility/activity. In addition, an overall improvement in the wear comfort of the robot is necessary. The short-time movement of wearing and walking in the gait-assistive rehabilitation robot did not interfere with the thermal comfort of the body. However, the robot needs to be ergonomically improved in consideration of the long wearing time along with improved material that to satisfy overall wearing comfort.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the patterns of D level protective clothing, improve their ease of movement by modifying the patterns, and validate the effectiveness of the improvements through 3D virtual fitting and subjective wearing evaluations. Based on previous studies that identified numerous complaints, the patterns of the neck, armpit, and waist areas were modified, resulting in the development of new patterns. To compare and analyze the improved protective clothing with the basic protective clothing, stress and strain were examined after 3D virtual fitting. Additionally, to assess the clothing's allowance, the overall distance between the avatar and the protective clothing, as well as the sectional circumference length and distance of each avatar body part, were measured. Furthermore, the improved protective clothing was manufactured, and a subjective wearing evaluation was conducted with ten males in their twenties as participants. The results showed that the improved protective clothing had evenly distributed stress, larger sectional circumference, and lower average cavity distance. The subjective wearing evaluation also revealed that the suit with improved patterns exhibited superior size suitability, reduced pulling sensation in different body parts, and increased ease of movement. In conclusion, this study confirmed that even minimal pattern modifications can enhance the functionality of protective clothing, alleviating discomfort for wearers.
The purpose of this study is to develop functional and sensible brassiere for middle-aged women. As a methodology, engineering design process, especially, QFD(Quality Function Deployment) was adopted to translate consumer's needs into product design parameters. Wearing tests of commercial brassiere were performed for the development o subjective measurement scale. The environmental condition was controlled at 28$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, 65$\pm$3%RH. As results, subjective measurement scale and dimension for the evaluation of sensible brassiere were extracted from factor analysis. Four factors were fitting, aesthetic property, pressure sensation, displacement of brassiere due to movement. Regression equations with the subjective evaluation descriptors were developed for the prediction of wearing comfort of brassiere. (R2=.82) The most critical design parameter was wire-related property and second one was stretchability of main material of brassiere. Also, wearing comfort of brassiere was affected by the interaction of initial stretchability of wing and support of strap.
This study analyzed the pressure, subjective wearing comfort, and design preference of brassiere shoulder straps among women in their 20s and 40s. Experimental clothing was made by different shoulder strap designs on a brassiere. In the four designs (A-D), the front attachment points of the shoulder straps were the same, but the back attachment points were different. Three of them (E, E1, E2) were of a halter neck design, with different front attachment positions. The pressures of A-D were measured at the position passing through the shoulder line (P1), and E-E2 was measured at the back neck (P2) as well as at P1. Subjective wearing comfort and design preference were rated on a 7-point Likert scale. A was determined to exert the highest pressure at the neck side of the design in the pressure measurement analysis of A-E2, whereas E1 exerted the lowest. E was measured to have the highest pressure among the E-E2 designs, whereas E2 had the lowest. Participants preferred A the most and E the least in regards to the subjective wearing comfort of A-E. Thus, participants deem A to be the most comfortable despite the high strap pressure. However, E was the most favored design, despite its poor wearing comfort. Participants' subjective impressions of E-E2 were that E2 was the most uncomfortable, but its design was the most preferred. Consumers' design preferences and subjective impressions of wearing comfort did not match.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the comfort and fabric hand characteristics of selected lining fabrics made of acetate and polyester. The comfort of the linings was determined by human subjects wearing suit blazers constructed with different lining materials in an environmental chamber controlled at $30.6^{\circ}C$ air temperature and 50% relative humidity. The hand characteristics of the lining fabrics were determined by five trained panelists using standard fabric reference samples. The effect of lining fabrics on the subjects' thermal sensations was not statistically significant. But the subjects voted warmer when wearing the polyester surah lined blazer or the polyester taffeta blazer than wearing the acetate blazers. The results of the subjective comfort evaluation indicated that, in general, the subjects rated the acetate linings significantly less sticky, clammy, damp, and non-absorbent than the polyester linings. Acetate surah was rated a little higher than the other acetate fabrics on these comfort descriptors. The results of the subjective hand evaluation indicated that the lining fabrics rated low on the geometric and mechanical hand characteristics and rated moderate on noise. Acetate surah scored the highest on most of the hand characteristics, whereas, polyester taffeta scored the lowest.
A tool to evaluate the subjective wearing comfort of caps from the objective measurement of pressure was developed. Comfortable Fittability Index(C.F.I) and Holding Power(HP) were defined to represent the subjective wearing comfort of caps. As a preliminary step to define the Comfortable Fittability Index(C.F.I), average pressure, pressure distribution, standard deviation of pressure were obtained and subjective sensation were evaluated by wearing caps. Also Holding Power(HP) was estimated from wind tunnel testing. Two sets of caps were evaluated, one set made of elastic fabric(F-caps) and the other set made of non-elastic fabric(S-caps). F-caps begin to be taken off by the higher wind velocity and thus exhibited higher values of Holding Power. On the other hand, F-caps exerted lower average pressure, narrower pressure distribution, smaller standard deviation.
Physiological responses and subjective sensations were evaluated for wearing protective welding clothing in consideration of the work environment for the shipbuilding industry. Experimental clothing was made of oxidant carbon nonwoven fabric (SW2) and oxidant carbon/p-aramid blended fabric (SW4). The values of all items in physiological responses were higher upon wearing oxidant carbon experimental clothing versus wearing oxidant carbon/p-aramid experimental clothing (p<.001). The results of the wearing evaluation in the welding work on-site showed that existing leather protective clothing had a very low satisfaction of permeability, weight sensation and wearing sensation. For the wearing sensation of experimental clothing with SW2, permeability and durability were poor and the pressure and weight sensation satisfaction was very high. In case of SW4, the satisfaction was very high in functional movement, pressure, weight sensation and management aspects; subsequently, the overall wearing satisfaction was very good.
In this study, a wrist protector was manufactured and designed using 3D printing technology to prevent wrist pain when riding a bicycle with a high forward-tilted saddle. The efficiency of the design was analyzed in objective and subjective evaluations. First, seven women in their twenties selected their most preferred design by subjective evaluation from among three 3D wrist protectors. Then electromyography (EMG) was measured and subjective sensations were evaluated while wearing and not wearing the preferred 3D wrist protector as selected by cyclists. Experimental results showed that a wrist-bending angle of 30 degrees was most favored. When the 3D wrist protector was worn, muscle activity was smaller at the flexor carpus radialis position than when the 3D wrist protector was not worn; muscle fatigue was also lower. In the subjective evaluation, the 3D wrist protector was more comfortable than no protector, and wrist fatigue was also lower. In addition, the wrist protector was rated positively for its design suitability, size adequacy, ease of operation, and fit; however, cyclists felt that a little more cushioning was needed.
In this study, the effect of wearing functional compression pants is verified using a lower-limb wearable robot through a bio-signal analysis and subjective fit evaluation. First, the compression area to be applied to the functional compression pants is derived using the quad method for nine men in their 20s. Subsequently, functional compression pants are prepared, and changes in Electroencephalogram (EEG) and Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals when wearing the functional compression and normal regular pants inside a wearable robot are measured. The EEG and ECG signals are measured with eyes closed and open. Results indicate that the Relative alpha (RA) and Relative gamma wave (RG) of the EEG signal differ significantly, resulting in increased stability and reduced anxiety and stress when wearing the functional compression pants. Furthermore, the ECG analysis results indicate statistically significant differences in the Low frequency (LF)/High frequency (HF) index, which reflect the overall balance of the autonomic nervous system and can be interpreted as feeling comfortable and balanced when wearing the functional compression pants. Moreover, subjective sense is discovered to be effective in assessing wear fit, ease of movement, skin friction, and wear comfort when wearing the functional compression pants.
