Body Weight and Body Image: A Risk Factor Analysis in Korea

  • The relationship between body weight and body image, an objective and subjective measure of body shape, respectively, has long been a recurrent concern in the area of medical sociology and health-related studies. This concern stems from the argument and findings in the literature indicating that the two are not necessarily likely to be strongly correlated due mostly to the fact that one's own idea or conception about his/her body shape could be pretty different from one's actual shape. This study tries to empirically address the two issues based on the analysis of a national sample survey data in Korea: to what extent body weight and body image are correlated with or deviated from each other, on the one hand, and what factors help to account for the relationship between the two, on the other. The latest(2010) national sample data of KGSS(Korean General Social Survey) is used to evaluate the issues. Results of data analysis demonstrate that body weight and image have a moderate amount of correlation, and that the correlation tends to vary to a large extent depending on a few major socio-demographic and socio-economic characteristics. Most important, the risk factor analysis attempted in this study could identify several salient risk factors, which include gender, age, chronic diseases, smoking, physical exercises, and medical checkup. To be precise, those who may be best characterized as particularly risky to weight gains are females, who are in their 20's, who have chronic diseases, non-smokers, who exercise regularly, and who conduct medical checkups on a regular basis. To extrapolate, the findings suggest that the most typically risky kinds of individuals in Korea are "young women who care very much for their health." The findings are interpreted and discussed with suggesting a recommendation for further studies.

A study on the degree of depression in dental hygienists (치과의원에 근무하는 일부 치과위생사의 우울수준에 관한 연구)

  • Objectives : The degree of depression in dental hygienist was analyzed to reveal the various factors related to them. Methods : The self-administered questionnaires were filled out from 202 dental hygienist in Daejeon City. The survey items included subjects' socio-demographic and job-related characteristics, health-related behaviors, depression. Chi-Square analysis and Pearson's correlation coefficient was put into survey results, in which a degree of depression was dependent variable and others were independent variable. Results : 1. The distribution for depression degree has shown the rate as 80.2% in normal range group and 19.8% in depression group. 2. As for depression, long working hours(p=0.042), poor sense satisfaction in work(p=0.000), not fit to the job(p=0.003), low personal relation with peer works or supervisors(p=0.039), without alcohol drinking(p=0.048), poor subjective condition of health(p=0.000) than their respective counterparts. 3. Concerning correlation between depression and various factors, poor sense satisfaction in work(r=-0.332, p=0.000), not fit to the job(r=-0.353, p=0.000), low personal relation with peer works or supervisors(r=-0.215, p=0.002), without alcohol drinking(r=-0183, p=0.009), poor subjective condition of health(r=-0.333, p=0.000). Conclusions : These results showed that depression state could be influenced by various factors, which include socio-demographic, job-related characteristics and health-related behaviors. Therefore, in order to reduce depression state of dental hygienists, development and application of programs to manage and research for them are required to be revitalized as well as socio-demographic and job-related characteristics and health-related behaviors.

The Influence of Health Outcomes on Work Compensations for Elderly Workers (장년근로자의 건강수준이 근로보상에 미치는 효과분석)

  • We examine the effects of the self-reported subjective and the objective health indexes on work compensations. The compensations consist of monetary factors, such as wages, and non-monetary factors reflecting job risks such as the workplace accidence. The wages and workplace injuries are clearly affected by gender and age differences as the subjective and objective health factors of elderly workers are combined with physical and systematic work environments. Mental health problems such as work depression are more serious especially for high income elderly groups. The elderly workers experienced with physical problems and chronic illnesses are led to the decrease in wages and the increase in safety accident risks at work sharply. Therefore, we need to provide supporting services, retirement planning designed by companies, supported by the government enhanced risk working conditions and the weakness on protecting jobs.

  • In this research, The impact factor based on previous studies was composed of attitudes, subjective norms, and executive organization. The purpose of this study was to analyze how these factors have affected on the behavior intention and the behavior the parking regulatory policy using The theory of reasoned action. In addition, The effect of moderate variable(residence, housing type) to be verified. Conducted a survey of the area that was subjected to the parking regulatory policy, and the survey result was analyzed. After verifying the hypothesis using structural equation modeling, Two factors (Attitude, subjective norm) were found to be on the positive effect on the behavior intention and Two factors (Attitude, executive organization) were found to be on the positive effect on the behavior. As a result of verifying the effect of moderate variable(residence, housing type), The residence variable showed a significant moderating effect on the relationship between attitudes and behavior and the housing type variable turned out a significant moderating effect on the relationship between enforcement agency and behavior. On the basis of this analysis, presented a practical way for regulatory compliance or Non compliance on the parking regulatory policy.

  • Objectives: This study aims to prove that stress directly or indirectly affects the jaw joint disorders and provide basic data for developing oral health promotion program. Methods: The study was conducted by distributing a questionnaire survey to more than 350 people from December 30, 2016 to January 7, 2017. Among them, 336 copies were collected and 314 copies were utilized eventually, except Section 314, for the final analysis. Regression analysis was performed to investigate the factors affecting temporomandibular joint disorders. Results: As a result, academic achievement and stress were found to affect the temporomandibular joint disorders. The higher the level of education and stress, the higher the subjective symptoms of jaw joint disorder. Conclusions: Because stress affects temporomandibular joint disorders, it is necessary to find out the cause of stress not only for professional treatment but also for solution of temporomandibular disorder. Thus, stress level must be conisdred as influential factors in developing a jaw joint disease prevention program.

Comparison of Awareness about Alcohol Use during Pregnancy among Female College Students by Drinking Levels: Using the Theory of Planned Behavior (음주 수준에 따른 여자 대학생의 임신 중 음주 인식 비교: 계획된 행위 이론을 적용하여)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of alcohol use during pregnancy and factors influencing the intention to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy by drinking levels. Methods: Utilizing a comparative descriptive design, a total of 359 female college students were recruited. Measurements were Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) variables related awareness of alcohol use during pregnancy, Korean Version of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, knowledge about alcohol use during pregnancy, and socio-demographic factors. Main variables were compared by drinking levels. The factors influencing the intention to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy were identified using hierarchical regression analysis. Results: Non-problematic alcohol behavior group (n=185) had higher the intention to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy than problematic alcohol behavior group (n=174) (t=3.13, p=.002). The significant TPB variables influencing the intention to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy were that attitudes (β =-.44, p<.001), subjective norms (β =.14, p=.026), and perceived behavior control (β =.19, p=.002) in non-problematic alcohol behavior group, whereas the corresponding variables in the problematic alcohol behavior group were attitudes (β =-.51, p<.001) and subjective norms (β =.21, p=.006). Conclusion: It is necessary to increase the intention to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy for the female college students having problematic alcohol behavior. The following strategies are recommended for them; decreasing acceptable attitudes toward alcohol use during pregnancy and reinforcing the influence of social pressure toward to abstain from alcohol during pregnancy.

Convergence Factors Influencing the Quality of Life in the Elderly People Living Alone (독거노인의 삶의 질에 영향을 미치는 융복합적 요인)

  • In this study, the correlation between convergence factors including social, environmental, psychological and physical factors and the health-related quality of life was examined using a structural equation model to find a practical alternative for improving the quality of life in the elderly people living alone. This study targeted 13,771 seniors from single households aged 65 and over, who were subject to the community health survey in 2014. Social capitals, stress, subjective health conditions and EQ-5D of the subjects were analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0. The analysis findings are as follows. The results of the model fit was good value with CFI=.906, GFI=.955, RMSEA=.074. In conclusion, these results demonstrate that for maintaining health and improving the quality of life in the elderly people living alone, families and local communities need to increase social capitals by providing care service for the elderly people living alone and grounds that they can participate in.

Convergency Study of Factors Associated with Treatment-Seeking Behavior in Men with Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (하부요로증상을 가진 성인 남자의 치료추구행위 영향요인에 대한 융합연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to assess treatment-seeking behavior and to identify the factors that affect treatment-seeking behavior of men having lower urinary tract symptoms. One hundred thirty-two men working at public institutions or visiting the public institutions were included for this study. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire survey done from October to November, 2016. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. The treatment-seeking behavior was found only in 55.6% (n=79) with lower urinary tract symptoms. The factors that affect treatment-seeking behavior in men with lower urinary tract symptoms significantly were economic status, subjective health status, autonomy, and competence. Results of this study provided fundamental data for developing the program to promote treatment-seeking behavior in men with lower urinary tract symptoms.

A Study on the Analysis of Crew Members Fatigue Survey for the Ship Types in Korea (국내 선종별 선박승무원 피로도 분석에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the crew members fatigue survey in order to understand the current state of various fatigue causal factors and personnel fatigue subjective symptoms, and then analyzes the survey items. The results of this survey are as follows. Firstly, many crew members were struggling with the lack of sleep and rest hour. Secondly, environmental factors such as weather, ship motion and vibration, noise, accommodation condition etc. disturbed the sleep of crew members. In third, their duty hours were more than 10 hours per day in certain types of ship. In fourth, they felt fatigue a lot when they were on board because of the workload and stress. Lastly, in some measurement items of fatigue symptoms(physical, mental, emotional), many crew members were experiencing more than moderate fatigue symptoms.

Influential Factors on Job Engagement in Police Officers (경찰관의 직무열의에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influencing factors of job engagement among Korean police officers. This was the secondary analysis of data from the 5th Korean Working Conditions Survey (KWCS). The study subjects included 185 Korean police officers. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression with IBM SPSS Statistics 24.0 program. Job insecurity (${\beta}=-.34$, p<.001), job reward (${\beta}=.39$, p<.001), subjective health status (${\beta}=.22$, p<.001), and organizational justice (${\beta}=.20$, p=.002) were significant influencing factors on job engagement, explaining 59.3% of the variance (F=34.26, p<.001). Effective and systematic strategies to improve Korean police officers' job engagement should focus on job reward, job insecurity, subjective health status, and organizational justice. The results of this study can be utilized as base data to improve Korean police officers' job engagement.
