  • [ $1m^3$ ] solid hydrate contains up to $200m^3$ of natural gas, depending on pressure and temperature. Such large volume of natural gas hydrate can be utilized to store and transport large quantity of natural gas in a stable condition. So, in the present investigation, experiments carried out for the formation of natural gas hydrate governed by pressure, temperature, and gas compositions, etc.. The results show that the equilibrium pressure of structure II natural gas hydrate) is approximately 65% lower and the solubility is approximately three times higher than structure I methane hydrate). Also, the subcooling conditions of the structure I and II must be above 9K and 11K in order to form hydrate rapidly regardless of gas components, but the pressure increase is more advantageous than the temperature decrease in order to increase the gas consumption. And utilizing nozzles for spraying water in the form of droplets into the natural gas dramatically reduces the hydrate formation time and increases its solubility at the same time.

  • Partial discharge measurement is one of the effective diagnostic techniques to predict abnormal high voltage dielectric insulation conditions of the electric equipments. Recently partial discharge diagnostic techniques were also utilized to evaluate the cryogenic dielectric insulation of high temperature superconducting electric equipment in liquid nitrogen. Generally, liquid nitrogen at 77 K is used used as the cryogenic and dielectric media for many high temperature superconducting high voltage applications. When a quench in the superconductor occurs, bubbles are generated which can affect the dielectric properties of the liquid nitrogen. So in order to reduce the bubble formation, subcooled nitrogen was also employed for this purpose. In this work, investigation of partial discharge characteristics of subcooled liquid nitrogen were conducted in order to clarify the retardation of partial discharge initiation voltage according to the different subcooling temperature of liquid nitrogen. And also the relation of partial discharge phenomena and the activities of bubbles were analyzed. It was observed that PD inception voltages shows rather different characteristics according to the decrease of subcooling temperature and the activities of bubbles were strongly influenced by temperature of the subcooled liquid nitrogen.

  • As a compressed water is rapidly expanded through a nozzle, two-phase flow of vapor and liquid is formed in the nozzle due to the flash evaporation. In the present study, critical flow of two-phase fluids is analysized using an Isentropic-Homogeneous-Equilibrium model and a Leung model. Calculation results show that the choke of the two-phase flow can be two different types of continuous and discontinuous chokings. For the stagnation pressure below 10 Mpa it is found that the continuous choking, which is similar to the choking phenomenon of single-phase gas flow, is possible only when the degree of subcooling is less than 10K.

  • Methane hydrate is crystalline ice-like compounds which formed methane gas enters within water molecules composed cavity and each other from physically-bond at specially temperature and pressure condition. $1m^3$ of methane hydrate can be decomposed into the maximum of $216m^3$ of methane gas under standard condition. If these characteristics of hydrate are utilized in the opposite sense, natural gas can be fixed into water in the form of a hydrate solid. Therefore the use of hydrate is considered to be a great way to transport and store natural gas in large quantity. However, when methane hydrate is formed artificially, the amount of gas that is consumed is relatively low, due to the slow reaction rate between water and methane gas. Therefore for practical purposes in the application, the present investigation focuses on increasing the amount of gas consumed by adding chemically oxidized OMWCNTs to pure water. The results show that when 0.003 wt% of oxidation multi-walled carbon nanotubes was added to pure water, the amount of gas consumed was almost four times more than that of pure water indicating its effect in hydrate formation and the hydrate formation time decreased at alow subcooling temperature.

  • This paper present the performance characteristics of R404A two-stage compression refrigeration system. The operating parameters considered in this study include evaporating and condensing temperature, subcooling and superheating degree, compressor efficiency. The main results were summarized as follows: The COP of two-stage compression refrigeration system using R404A has an effect on the variation of evaporation temperature, condensation temperature, subcooling degree and compressor efficiency, but not an effect on the superheating degree. R404A two-stage compression refrigeration system is unstable because COP of this system is significantly changed when evaporating temperature and compressor efficiency decreased. In particular, when compressor efficiency decreased, COP is significantly decreased. This is inefficient for long-term use.

  • Coefficient of performance (COP) for two-stage compression system is investigated in this paper to develop seawater ice machine. The system performance is analyzed with respect to degrees of superheating and subcooling, condensing and evaporating temperatures, compression and mechanical efficiencies and mass flow ratio in an inter-cooler. The main results are summarized as follows : The COP of the system grows when the mass flow ratio, subcooling degree and evaporating temperature edge up. Contrariwise, the system performance descends in case that superheating degree and condensing temperature increase. The most effective factor for the COP is the mass flow rate ratio. Each refrigerant has different limitation for a value of the mass flow ratio in the inter-cooler because of difference in material property.

  • This study is simulation of high elevated liquid line of a modular heat pump system to observe longitudinal subcooling variation. In a high elevated tube, subcooled refrigerant(R410A) through a condenser changes its states by heat transfer with surrounding air and by pressure drop from elevation. In this study, the liquid line was simulated through correlations of heat transfer and pressure drop for the variation from single-phase into two-phase flow. Pressure drop, heat transfer rate and vapor quality were calculated as key parameters. Two-phase turning heights and variations of the key parameters were confirmed from the simulation. As a result, high elevation of liquid line has great influence on upward flow, which requires additional equipment to compensate the variation.

  • The applications of multi air-conditioners into multiplex and high-rise buildings have been increased by replacing central air-conditioning systems. The pipe length and altitude difference between the indoor and outdoor units can be increased based on installation conditions, which may increase the possibility of flash gas generation at the expansion device inlet. The flash gas generation causes rapid reduction of refrigerant flow rate passing through the expansion device, yielding lower system efficiency. Accumulator heat exchangers have been widely used in multi air-conditioners in order to minimize flash gas generation and obtain system reliability. However, the studies on the heat transfer characteristics and pressure drops of accumulator heat exchangers are very limited in open literature. In this study, the heat transfer rates and pressure drops of accumulator heat exchangers were measured with refrigerant flow rate and operating conditions by using R-22. The heat transfer rate increased with the increase of refrigerant flow rate, while subcooling decreased. The heat transfer rate enhanced with the reduction of inlet superheat and subcooling due to the increased temperature difference between the accumulator and inner heat exchanger.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a vapor cycle refrigeration system as a cooling system to provide cooling air to the aircraft external reconnaissance stores. In the proposed vapor cycle system, receiver which prevents refrigerant from subcooling was eliminated and thermal expansion valve was replaced with electronic expansion valve. The vapor cycle refrigeration system is aimed to provide cooling air to the reconnaissance stores which is added to the aircraft in the form of external store. The wide temperature range of ambient air from the flight conditions can decrease the cooling performance and can make the refrigeration system unstable in low ambient temperature. Performance characteristics of the vapor cycle refrigeration system has been experimented under air conditions which is derived from the flight envelope. From the experiments, the vapor cycle refrigeration system has been proved to provide enough cooling air to the reconnaissance equipment and to be stable under all the flight conditions.
