Tertiary unconsolidated mudstones spread throughout the eastern coast area. The demand for high quality filling materials in these areas is increasing due to harbors and large-scale residential land development. Rock produced in-situ or near site has been used as road subbase construction or reclamation materials for economical reason, but it is hard to decide appropriateness of quality specification because of its characteristics. The test results showed that unconsolidated rocks are diversely considered according to a different method of the applied geotechnical investigation. Therefore, the site of tertiary unconsolidated mudstones, the classification of rock and evaluation of rock properties that must be evaluated by objective criteria and apply a different set of criteria are needed. In addition, the environmental impact must be considered due to acid mine drainage.

The rubblization technique is breaking the aged concrete pavement slab into rubblized concrete aggregate, and use it as an base material at its original position, then builds overlay above the rubblized base. This method has been successively used in USA due to the advantage of good constructibility, cost-effectiveness as well as the capability of preventing of reflection cracks. However, constructibility and economic performance of rubblization on typical Korean concrete pavements needed to be investigate since to typical Korean concrete pavements have thick slab, as well include lean concrete subbase course. Multi-head type breaker suitable for Korean condition was designed and developed. This multi-head type breaker was designed to rubblize old concrete to the suggested optimum rubblized-depth and rubblized-concrete-aggregate size to prevent reflection crack and maintain high bearing capacity. This machine was used for the test of rubblization of old concrete pavement on a non-use old concrete and a in-serviced road. In these two tests, engineering properties of rubblized base and constructability and cost were investigated. In both tests, the old concrete rubblized to targeted size and depth, and high-level bearing capacity was achieved. Also, superior constructability and lower cost compared with traditional reconstruction was examined.

The vertical soil pressure developed in the granular layer of asphalt pavement system is influenced by various factors, including the wheel load magnitude, the loading speed, and asphalt pavement temperature. This research observed the distribution of vertical soil pressure in pavement supporting layer by investigating measured data from soil pressure gage in the KHC Test Road. The existing specification of subbase and subgrade compaction was also evaluated with measured vertical pressure. The finite element analysis was conducted to verify the accuracy of results with measured data because it can maximize research capacity without significant field test. The test data was collected from A5, A7, A14, and A15 test sections at August, September, and November 2004 and August 2005. Those test sections and test data were selected because they had best quality. The size of influence area was evaluated and the vertical pressure variation was investigated with respect to load level, load speed, and pavement temperature. The lower speed, higher load level, and higher pavement temperature increased the vertical pressure and reduced the area of influence. The finite element result showed the similar trend of vertical pressure variation in comparison with measured data. The specification of compaction quality for subbase and subgrade is higher than the level of vertical pressure measured with truck load so that it should be lurker investigated.
The porous pavement system is widely considered very effective in urban street because of its various benefits on safety and environment, but the pavement thickness design system has not been established yet. In porous pavement system. rainwater penetrates to the subgrade through porous pavements layers. Porous pavements are expected to reduce or alleviate the problems caused by impermeable pavement layer such as flood damage due to heavy rain in the city, drainage load, disorder in ecosystem, and heat island. However, its structural design methods in traffic roads has not been made mainly because of not being able to consider adequately the effect of rainwater on subgrade strength. In this study, structural design method of porous pavements is suggested after considering the subgrade weakness due to rainwater and numerical mechanical analysis. It is noted that elastic modulus of subgrade is reduced by 20% as subgrade moisture content is increased by 2% at optimum moisture content in the literature review. As a result of both finite element analysis and strength loss of subgrade by the existing design method, it is necessary to increase subbase thickness about 30cm in porous pavements compared with the existing traffic road pavement system. It is similar to premium thickness of structural design of porous pavements in Japan.

The infrastructure of flexible pavement is composed of aggregate subbase, anti-frost layer, and subgrade. In particular, the subgrade performance is affected by climates such as frost action and precipitation. The method of TDR(Time Domain Reflectometry) sensors to measure moisture contents in subgrade layer has been used in the research. Due to the TDR method using dielectric permitivity of soil and water, the sensors can be affected by the low subgrade temperatures. The air temperatures frequently drops below $-20^{\circ}C$ in the winter in Korea. As a result, it is necessary to estimate the accuracy of the TDR moisture sensors in the range of below zero temperatures. In this study, the subgrade temperatures of lower than $-2^{\circ}C$ were extended to evaluate temperature sensitivity of the TDR moisture sensors. The test results revealed that the moisture contents around the sensors were reduced while those of the upper part of specimen showed a tendency to increase as the specimen surface temperature drops below zero under the volumetric moisture contents(VMC) of 20% and 30%. However, the impact of temperature on the function of the sensor at lower water contents was found to be negligible if any.

In case of crushing rock to produce materials for lean concrete subbase layer in concrete pavement, natural sand is used for the gradation adjustment of aggregates, and the percentage of natural sand used is 30%~40% of the weight ratio of aggregate mix. The supply of natural sand that is used in lean concrete as a fine aggregate is getting harder due to the current of exhaustion of source, and the cost for the purchase of natural sand is included in the cost of roadway construction. This study, therefore, was conducted in order to resolve the exhaustion of materials and economize in construction expenditure by the application of screenings, which is by-product of crushing rock in quarry, as an alternative to natural sand. As a result of a comparative analysis on the application of screenings and natural sand with typical types of rock that is produced in domestic, which was conducted in the first year, It is found out that the use of screenings as a fine aggregate showed better unconfined compression strength. Verification of actual application of screenings was conducted in the second year, after test construction and follow-up investigation. The compressive strength, compaction density, settlement of screenings applied case was higher than that of natural sand. Thus, it is expected that application of screenings to construction in field will contribute to the cost saving, material recycling and the protection of environment.
It is important to pay careful attention to the backfill construction for the structural integrity of concrete box culvert. To increase the structural integrity of culvert good compaction by the dynamic compaction roller with big capacity is as effective as good backfill materials. However structural distress of the culvert could be occurred due to the excessive earth pressure by great dynamic compaction load. In this study, two box culverts were constructed with change compaction materials and construction methods. Two type of on-site soils such as subbase and subgrade materials were used as backfill materials. In most case, dynamic compaction rollers with 11 to 12 ton weights were used and vibration frequency were applied from 2000 to 2500 rpm for the great compaction energy. Backfill compactions with good quality soils were carried out to examine the effect of cushions on dynamic lateral soil pressure. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) and rubber of tire were adapted as cushion materials and they are set on the culverts before backfill construction. This paper presents the main results on the characteristics of dynamic earth pressures. Test result indicates that the amounts of increased dynamic pressures are affected with backfill materials, depth of pressure cell, and compaction condition. The earth pressure during compaction can give harmful effect to box culvert because the value of dynamic earth pressure coefficient $(\DeltaK_{dyn}=\DeltaK\sigma_h\DeltaK\sigma_v)$ during compaction is greater than that of static condition. It was observed that cushion panels of EPS(t=10cm) and rubber(t=5cm) are effective to mitigate dynamic lateral pressure on the culverts.
The objective of this paper is the establishment of finite element analysis frame work for pavement research. Finite element analysis results simulating various loading experiments are verified with sensor measurements obtained from the KHC Test Road. The accuracy of the finite element analysis can be supported by these efforts so that it helps spread out the finite element analysis to pavement research and design processes. The finite element model used in this research is the full 3D nonlinear model including concrete slab, lean concrete base, subbase, shoulder, dowel, and tie-bar. In order to accomplish the accurate verification, the loading condition and the pavement temperature distribution are exactly simulated with field measured data. The curling behavior and the strain distribution are compared with measured responses from the loading tests with a truck and the FWD. Strain and curling predictions from the concrete slab are matched well with measured responses but the strain prediction from the lean concrete base is not matched with measured response. In addition, the magnitude of permanent curling is evaluated with the finite element analysis.

PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of size and depth of cavities on the pavement failure using the full-scale accelerated pavement testing. METHODS : A full-scale testbed was constructed by installing the artificial cavities at a depth of 0.3 m and 0.7 m from the pavement surface for accelerated pavement testing. The cavities were made of ice with a dimension of 0.5 m*0.5m*0.3m, and the thickness of asphalt and base layer were 0.2 m and 0.3 m, respectively. The ground penetrating radar and endoscope testing were conducted to determine the shape and location of cavities. The falling weight deflectometer testing was also performed on the cavity and intact sections to estimate the difference of structural capacity between the two sections. A wheel loading of 80 kN was applied on the pavement section with a speed of 10 km/h in accelerated pavement testing. The permanent deformation was measured periodically at a given number of repetitions. The correlation between the depth and size of cavities and pavement failure was investigated using the accelerated pavement testing results. RESULTS : It is found from FWD testing that the center deflection of cavity section is 10% greater than that of the intact section, indicating the 25% reduction of modulus in subbase layer due to the occurrence of the cavity. The measured permanent deformation of the intact section is approximately 10 mm at 90,000 load repetitions. However, for a cavity section of 0.7 m depth, a permanent deformation of 30 mm was measured at 90,000 load repetitions, which is three times greater than that of the intact section. At cavity section of 0.3 m, the permanent deformation reached up to approximately 90 mm and an elliptical hole occurred at pavement surface after testing. CONCLUSIONS : This study is aimed at determining the pavement failure mechanism due to the occurrence of cavities under the pavement using accelerated pavement testing. In the future, the accelerated pavement testing will be conducted at a pavement section with different depths and sizes of cavities. Test results will be utilized to establish the criteria of risk in road collapse based on the various conditions.
A single particle crushing test was carried out for recycled aggregates from waste concrete while demolishing various structures. When the recycled aggregates were used for backfill or road subbase materials, load-displacement and crushing characteristics were analyzed. The recycled aggregates with hydrates and aggregates were sorted into 40 mm size (75-40 mm) and 20 mm size (40-20 mm). At initial loading, their irregular surface was closed to and then crushed by loading plate. Such first crushing stage was called 'Surface crushing'. Further loading, some hydrate was crushed and detached from aggregate, and such process repeated several times. This state is called 'hydrate crushing'. The final state is called 'aggregate crushing' in which aggregate crushed and following load suddenly dropped down. As the load increased, such crushing cycle is repeated several times. The shapes of aggregates are round or square, and triangle or long shaped. Depending on their shapes and surface conditions, they crushed in different ways. The 63% of aggregates showed more than 50% load reduction due to aggregate crushing. The 90% load reduction occurred at 15% of aggregates. The 40 mm aggregate crushed at maximum load between 3.05-4.38 kN and 70% of crushed aggregates were less than 20 mm.
