This paper focuses on the problem of key-frames coding and proposes a new promising approach based on the use of fractals. The summary, made of a set of key-frames selected from a full-length video sequence, is coded by using a 3D fractal scheme. This allows the video presentation tool to expand the video sequence in a "natural" way by using the property of the fractals to reproduce the signal at several resolutions. This feature represents an important novelty of this work with respect to the alternative approaches, which mainly focus on the compression ratio without taking into account the presentation aspect of the video summary. In devising the coding scheme, we have taken care of the computational complexity inherent in fractal coding. Accordingly, the key-frames are first wavelet transformed, and the fractal coding is then applied to each subband to reduce the search range. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

EZW proposed by Shapiro is based on a zerotree constructed in a way that a parent coefficient in a subband is related to four child coefficients in the next finer subband of similar orientation. This fixed treeing based on 1-to-4 parent-child is suitable to exploti hierachical correlations among subbands but not to exploit spatial correlations within a subband. A new treeing by Joo, et al. is suggested to simulatneously exploit those two correlatins by extending parent-child relationship in a flexible way. The flexible treeing leads to increasing the number of symbols and lowering entorpy comparing to the fixed treeing, and therefore a better compression can be resulted. In this paper, we suggest two techniques to suppress the increasing of symbols. First, a probing bit is generated to avoid redundant scan for insignivicant coefficients. Second, since all subbands do not always require the same kind of symbol-set, produced symbols are re-symbolized into binary codes according to a pre-defined procedure. Owing to those techniques, all symbols are generated as binary codes. The binary symbols can be entropy-coded by an adaptive arithmetic coding. Moerover, the binary symbol stream can give comparatively good performances without help of additional entropy coding. Our proposed coding scheme is suggested in two modes: binary coding mode and arithmetic coding mode. We evaluate the effectivenessof our modifications by comparing with the original EZW.
EZW, a wavelet transformation based compression algorithm, utilizes the correlations of the wavelet coefficients between subbands. Due to the reason that, it is based on Zero Tree's parent-descendant dependency of the subbands, subband coding is possible, but it is not efficient for applications, which require multi-resolution restorations. In this paper we compare and analyze the performance between spatial band coding, which apply the correlation between adjusting pixels, and EZW So as to prove that spatial band coding is superior to EZW in the sense that it exhibit higher PSNR values and that it is apt to molti-resolution restoration.
A method for image compression based on decomposition is presented. We design the efficient coding technique for upper band image signals. This coding technique with directive 1-D DPCM is based on the statistical properties of upper bands. Lower band image signals is encoded using 2-D DPCM. The directive 1-D DPCM is performed, scanning upper bands according to edge direction. And then the predicted error signals of upper band sis coded using B1 and Huffman code, and the predicted error signals of lower band is coded using Huffman code. The proposed system shows improved performance when compared with other existing methods with respect to peak signal to noise ratio(PSMR) and human visual system(HVS) properties.

Medical imagies with high resolution are coded to be archived and communicated in MPACS. In this paper, we have studied on coding of Cardio-Angiography. Our coding technique is Subband-Vector Quantization. This techniques is irreversible coding method. This technique's advantages are removing blocking artifact and edge degradation, adapting for drastic image change because of dye injection, and fast decoding. We achieved good results for Cardio-Angiography data, but the study on more sophiscated motion estimation techniques and VQ techniques must be performed.

Wavelet transform has specific properties for image coding. The property used at this Paper is clustering of significant coefficients across subband. These coefficients are classified in significant coefficient and insignificant coefficient on a threshold value, and symbolized EZW decreases symbol-position information using zero-trees, but threshold value fall for raising resolution, then coding cost of significant coefficients is expensive. To avoid this fact, this paper uses quad-tree representing coefficient-position information. a magnitude of significant coefficient is represented on matrix used at EZW. the proposed algorithm is hoped for raising a coding cost.

When finite length signal is the input of QMF banks which are composed of the M-band orthogonal wavelet filter, the boundaries of reconstructed signal are not reconstructed perfectly. For boundary signals to be reconstructed perfectly, different type filters or methods are applied to them. In this paper, the design method of boundary filters which can be reconstructed the boundary signal perfectly was proposed, in case the dimension of M-band decomposed signal is the same as that of input signal. The boundary filters were designed using the perfect reconstruction condition of paraunitary matrix. In an application of subband coding of still image, the proposed boundary filters achieve better PSNR about 5% in reconstructed image than reflected method at the same bit rate.

SAR radar and FLIR images, which are taken from sensors on aircrafts or satellites, are compressed prior to transmission to facilitate rapid transfer through the limited bandwidth channels. In this case, it is important that it achieves compression ratio as high as possible as well as high target detection rate. In this paper a joint ATR-compression system based on the subband coding and VQ is proposed, which utilizes the encoder as a predictor or classifier for target detection. Simulation result shows that the proposed system achieves a relatively high level of target detection performance as well as a high compression ratio over 200:1.

Inthis paper, we investigate the compatible coding technique, which receives much interest ever since the introduction of HDTV. First, attempts have been made to analyze the theoretical transform coding gains for various hierarchical decomposition techniques, namely subband, pyramid and DCT-based decomposition techniques. It is shown that the spatical domain techniques proide higher transform coding gains than the DCT-based coding technique. Secondly, we compare the performance of these spatial domain techniques, in terms of the PSNR versus various rate allocations to each layer. Based on these analyses, it is believed that the pyramid decomposition is more appropriate for the compatible coding. Also in this paper, we propose a hybrid prediction pyramid coding technique, by combining the spatio-temporal prediction in MPEG-2[3] and the adaptive MC(Motion Compensation)[1]. In the proposed coding technigue, we also employ an adaptive DCT coefficient scanning technique to exploit the direction information of the 2nd-layer signal. Through computer simulations, the proposed hybrid prediction with adaptive scanning technuque shows the PSNR improvement, by about 0.46-1.78dB at low 1st-layer rate(about 0.1bpp) over the adaptive MC[1], and by about 0.33-0.63dB at high 1st-layer rate (about 0.32-0.43bpp) over the spatio-temporal prediction[3].
Wideband speech, characterized by a bandwidth of 50∼7000 ㎐, sounds more natural and intelligible, and is less tiring to listen to when compared to narrowband speech characterized by a bandwidth of 300∼3400 ㎐. Wideband speech coders, however, have not been as successful as the narrowband speech coders because of their higher bit rate. In this paper, we propose a new wideband speech coder which combines the European standard of a narrowband speech coder, i.e., GSM-EFR, and a transform coder using the discrete wavelet transform. The proposed wideband speech coder operates as follows input speech is first split into two subbands with equal bandwidth and the two subband signals are coded and decoded by each subband coder. A GSM-EFR is adopted as a lower subband coder and a subband coder with wavelet transformed speech is designed for a upper subband coder. The total bit rate of the proposed coder is 18.9kbps (12.2 kbps for lower band coder and 6.7 kbps for upper band coder), and informal listening test results have shown that the proposed coder has comparable speech quality to that of G.722 with 56 kbps.
