On the Spectral Shape of Non-recycled γ-ray Pulsars

  • More than 100 γ−ray pulsars have been discovered by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. With a significantly enlarged sample size, it is possible to compare the properties of different classes. Radio-quiet (RQ) γ−ray pulsars form a distinct population, and various studies have shown that the properties of the RQ population can be intrinsically different from those of radio-loud (RL) pulsars. Utilizing these differences, it is possible to further classify the pulsar-like unidentified γ−ray sources into sub-groups. In this study, we suggest the possibility of distinguishing RQ/RL pulsars by their spectral shape. We compute the probabilities of a pulsar to be RQ or RL for a given spectral curvature. This can provide a key to the estimation of the intrinsic fraction of radio-quietness in the γ−ray pulsar population, which can place a tight constraint on the emission geometry.

A Study on the Development of a Scale Measuring Life Satisfaction of After-School Child Care (아동의 방과후 보육 생활 만족도 척도 개발 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a scale to measure the life satisfaction of after-school classes. For this purpose, utilizing the theoretical background and the findings of previous studies, 147 questions from eight factors were selected for the 1st draft and 67 questions were selected for the 2nd draft by reviewing the validity of the contents after consulting with eleven professionals. A preparatory survey and factor analysis was then conducted using 291 people and a total of 32 questions were extracted from four sub-factors. Exploratory factor analysis by principal component analysis was conducted and orthogonal rotation was conducted by means of the VARIMAX method. The reliability of the class environment, operation management, program and teacher relationship sector were found to be very high. It is suggested that this study can be of great benefit in developing a child-centered scale and it's reliability was also found to be high.

Dichotomy of the Galactic Halo as Revealed by Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor Giants

  • We present distinct chemical and kinematic properties associated with the inner and outer halos of the Milky Way, as identified by metal-poor stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. In particular, using carbon-enhance metal-poor (CEMP) giants, we first map out the fractions of CEMP-no stars (without strongly enhanced neutron-capture elements) and CEMP-s stars (with a large enhancement of s-process elements) in the inner- and outer-halo populations, separated by their spatial distribution of carbonicity ([C/Fe]). The CEMP-no and CEMP-s objects are classified by their different levels of absolute carbon abundances, A(C). We investigate characteristics of rotational velocity and orbital eccentricity for these sub-classes within the halo populations. Distinct kinematic features and fractions between CEMP-no and CEMP-s stars identified in each halo region will provide important clues on the origin of the dichotomy of the Galactic halo.

  • In this paper we consider the uniform central limit theorem for a martingale-difference array of a function-indexed stochastic process under the uniformly integrable entropy condition. We prove a maximal inequality for martingale-difference arrays of process indexed by a class of measurable functions by a method as Ziegler [19] did for triangular arrays of row wise independent process. The main tools are the Freedman inequality for the martingale-difference and a sub-Gaussian inequality based on the restricted chaining. The results of present paper generalizes those of Ziegler [19] and other results of independent problems. The results also generalizes those of Bae and Choi [3] to martingale-difference array of a function-indexed stochastic process. Finally, an application to classes of functions changing with n is given.

  • The Land Use Suitability Assessment System was recently introduced by the $\ulcorner$Act on Planning and Utilization of the National Territory$\lrcorner$ to use, manage, and develop the national territory, which integrated the National Land Use and Management Act and the Urban Planning Act. It provides a guideline for classifying land use into 5 classes according to locational characteristics, usability, and developmental conditions of land in the vicinity. The database is constructed with LMIS cadastral data, posted land price data, and data of related agencies such as the Korea Forest Service, the Ministry of Environment, and the Korea Water Resources Corporation etc. After the database construction, individual parcels are analysed by steps and classified into 3 sub areas - conservation, agriculture, and development using GIS. In this paper we evaluate land use suitability for individual parcels by constructing the Land Use Suitability Assessment System for Jinju city. Therefore, we suggest that this system provides vital data in the urban management planning process.

Comparison on How Much Dolittle and Squeak Languages Influence Improving Elementary Students' Logical Thinking Capability (두리틀과 스퀵 언어가 초등학생의 논리적 사고력 신장에 미치는 영향 비교)

  • Computer programming education can improve students' logical thinking and problem-solving ability. Therefore, it is essential tool to improve algorithmic thinking ability. We study how much Dolittle and Squeak influences improving elementary students' logical thinking ability. Thus, we divided 6th grade elementary students into two classes and then taught Dorittle and Squeak programming languages for 6 weeks, respectively. We compare and analyze each logical thinking ability and its sub-classifications. The results showed that Dorritle affects significant improvement, but not Squeak.

  • This paper derives a new training alorithm for WHMM using the well-known MCE/GPD method with experimental results on the E-set. The derived algorithm generalizes the conventional adaptive training algorithm for WHMM, which means that HMMs of multiple competing classes can be trained at the same time. The recognition results on the E-set have shown about 15% and 12% improvement for training and test data, respectively.

  • The Purposes of this study are first to develop the teaching and learning plan for the dress part in high school's Home Economics by the application of the values clarification theory then to apply it to the classroom activities. and lastly to analyze its effects. We developed the master plan for teaching and learning, and developed the 12 hour sub plans including 7 activities and learning materials. The effects of the teaching are as followings: First, When the self-esteem was compared with the whole classes, there was no difference between the twos, but a boy and a girl who were observed as not making a value-oriented life marked higher score in answering the self-esteem. Second. It was found that values clarification theory made student's degree of participation and interest higher and helped them to choose their dresses in the real life.

Optimization of ground response analysis using wavelet-based transfer function technique

  • One of the most advanced classes of techniques for ground response analysis is based on the use of Transfer Functions. They represent the ratio of Fourier spectrum of amplitude motion at the free surface to the corresponding spectrum of the bedrock motion and they are applied in frequency domain usually by FFT method. However, Fourier spectrum only shows the dominant frequency in each time step and is unable to represent all frequency contents in every time step and this drawback leads to inaccurate results. In this research, this process is optimized by decomposing the input motion into different frequency sub-bands using Wavelet Multi-level Decomposition. Each component is then processed with transfer Function relating to the corresponding component frequency. Taking inverse FFT from all components, the ground motion can be recovered by summing up the results. The nonlinear behavior is approximated using an iterative procedure with nonlinear soil properties. The results of this procedure show better accuracy with respect to field observations than does the Conventional method. The proposed method can also be applied to other engineering disciplines with similar procedure.

  • The contents of a new book currently in preparation are described. The dearth of books in the field of nuclear materials has left both students in nuclear materials classes and professionals in the same field without a resource for the broad fundamentals of this important sub-discipline of nuclear engineering. The new book is devoted entirely to materials problems in the core of light-water reactors, from the pressure vessel into the fuel. Key topics deal with the $UO_2$ fuel, Zircaloy cladding, stainless steel, and of course, water. The restriction to LWR materials does not mean a short monograph; the enormous quantity of experimental and theoretical work over the past 50 years on these materials presents a challenge of culling the most important features and explaining them in the simplest quantitative fashion. Moreover, LWRs will probably be the sole instrument of the return of nuclear energy in electric power production for the next decade or so. By that time, a new book will be needed.
