Evaluation Elements for Effectiveness of Rural Landscape Policy (농촌경관정책의 실효성을 위한 평가요소 도출)

  • For rural landscape management to run in virtuous circle, the present study has paid attention to the roles and activities of local residents and administration, which are the main sectors of managing landscape. In this respect, this study is aimed to arrange the roles of local residents and administration for landscape management and propose the basic data necessary to develope evaluation index for effectiveness of rural landscape policy. Key findings and implications are as follows. First, literature reviews of 18 landscape management studies found 37 administrative roles and 7 roles of local residents. And those roles were classified into 3 factors by similar concept: 'local government support system', 'landscape management planning', and 'promoting the participation of residents'. Second, two Delphi surveys were conducted with landscape experts to verify the validity of those evaluation items by sector. Third, factor analysis was carried out to analyze the hierarchical structure of those evaluation items. 3 sub-factors were extracted from 'local government support system' sector; 2 sub-factors from the 'landscape management planning' sector; and 4 sub-factors from the 'promoting participation of residents' sector. Fourth, the hierarchy of those evaluation factors was divided into high and low classes and sub-indexes were structured to examine the relative importance of each class and assign a relative weight on each index. The most important sub-factors were turned out as follows: 'local residents' will to practice landscape activities (0.112)', 'local government budget for rural landscape management (0.088), and 'restriction on buildings by village regulation (0.068). It indicates the viewpoints of the landscape experts that local residents' voluntary participation in landscape activities and agreement of local residents on landscape management by village, e.g. village regulation, are preconditions for successful landscape management. In addition, it is significant for a local government to secure the budget of landscape management to support local residents support.

A Study on the Priority and Evaluation Criteria of Domestic Support Measures according to FTA (FTA 체결에 따른 국내지원대책의 평가기준 및 우선순위 선정)

  • To improve support for damages due to FTA and competitive power to overcome it, direct damages to farming and fisheries are compensated through Direct Payment Policy and Business Cessation Support System. Support plans will be developed to enhance competitive power in industries and income base in rural areas. This study carried an AHP to decide Priority and Evaluation Criteria in respect to domestic support measures according to FTA. For the AHP, the classes were categorized into direct damage conservation, higher competitive power and expansion of income. For the direct damage preservation measures, the classes were categorized into farmers, fishermen, manufactures, service business managers, and workers. In respect to reinforcement of competitive power of each industry, the classes were categorized into farming, fisheries, manufacturing, the drug industry, and service business. In respect to expansion of income, the classes were categorized into farming and fishing. Then 27 national support measures were presented for sub-classes. As a result of the analysis, it was discovered that more weight was given to measures to reinforce competitive power of each industry and expand income than those on direct damage conservation. In respect to higher competitive power in industries, more weight was given to support for farming and manufacturing. In respect to expansion of income, more weight was given on measures on farming than fisheries. For the direct damage preservation measures, more weight was given on support measures on farmers and workers.

A Case Study of Middle School Science Teachers' Topic-Specific Pedagogical Content Knowledge on the Unit of Stars and Universe (별과 우주 단원에 대한 중학교 과학 교사의 주제-특이적 PCK 사례연구)

  • Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) is intrinsically domain/topic-specific knowledge for teachers' expertise. On the basis of this idea about PCK, we investigated in-service science teachers' topic-specific PCK on the unit of stars and universe in terms of teachers' knowledge and practices. We observed four middle school science teachers' classes for eighth graders, and took the videos of the classes. The topics of the classes covered constellation, annual parallax and the distance of stars, and the expansion of the universe. We also examined the teachers' pedagogical thinking through video stimulated recall interviews. In addition, we developed a protocol to analyze the levels of participant teachers' PCK and the characteristics revealed in their classes on each topic. Results of the study showed that the participant teachers' level of PCK varied across the topics of classes and the sub-components of PCK. We also identified teaching orientations played key roles in shaping overall characteristics of their PCK. Moreover, astronomical thinking such as spatial thinking and system thinking, was not appropriately embedded as the specific practices into the astronomical concepts in their instructions. We discussed the implications on the progressions of teachers' PCK in terms of their professional development.

A Study on the Effects of Teacher Librarians' Media and Information Literacy Classes: Focused on the High School Credit System (사서교사의 미디어 정보 리터러시 수업 효과에 관한 연구 - 고교학점제를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the role of teacher librarians by examining the cases of media and information literacy(MIL) classes in the joint curriculum of high school credit system research school. The classes were two 34th classes joint curriculum established by two teacher librarians at the high school credit system research school. Individual students set their own inquiry problems integrated with their careers or subjects, and teacher librarians guide the process of solving them based on the process of using MIL. The participants were 22 high school students in Daegu who filled out the questionnaire before and after completing the course. The effect of the classes was analyzed through a questionnaire consisting of 42 questions for the 3 factors of access, evaluation, and creation, which are the components of MIL announced by UNESCO. As a result, all 3 factors and 25 of the sub-42 survey items showed a statistically significant difference before and after class, It was investigated that literacy of students improved through MIL education of teacher librarians. Through this study, it will be possible to expand the awareness of the effect of the educational role of teacher librarians in the flow of future curriculum.

The Effects of Portfolio Instruction on the Creativity and Scientific Inquiry Ability of Students in Elementary Science Classroom (초등 과학 수업에서 포트폴리오 수업이 학생들의 창의성과 과학 탐구능력에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of portfolio instruction on the creativity and scientific inquiry ability of 6th-grade students in science classroom. Four classes were sampled from an urban elementary school in southern part of Seoul. Two classes were assigned to experimental group and the other two classes to control group. Portfolio instruction was administered to the experimental group for 10 weeks, and traditional instruction to the control group. Data on students' creativity and scientific inquiry ability were collected prior to and after the treatment for both groups. Students' perception on portfolio instruction was investigated with experimental group after the treatment. The results of this study are as follows: (1) Portfolio instruction had a significant positive effect on creativity; (2) Students' originality, one of sub-domain of creativity, showed marked increase after portfolio instruction; (3) Portfolio instruction had a significant positive effect on scientific inquiry ability; (4) Integrated inquiry ability, a sub-domain of inquiry ability, improved meaningfully after portfolio instruction; and (4) Students' perception on portfolio instruction is very positive.

The Effect of SSC(Small-Scale Chemistry) Lab Program on Scientifically Gifted Students' Scientific Attitude, Creative Personality Characteristics and Science Inquiry Skills (SSC(Small-Scale Chemistry)실험이 과학영재의 과학적 태도, 창의적 성격 특성 및 과학탐구 능력에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of SSC(Small-Scale Chemistry) lab program applying to scientifically gifted students' classes. The participants were 15 the middle school scientifically gifted students selected and enrolled in science-gifted education center of university. SSC lab program was applied for 3 month with 5 topics. The research design was one group pretest-posttest design, the data were analyzed using the PASW 18 statistics program. The results of this study were as follows: First, the scientific attitude of scientifically gifted students was improved significantly(p<.01) after applying SSC lab program. Especially, there were significant difference between pre-test and post-test in the scores of cooperativity, spontaneity, perseverance, which were the sub-region of scientific attitude. Second, the creative personality characteristics of scientifically gifted students showed statistically significant improvements(p<.01) after applying SSC lab program. Especially, there was significant difference between pre-test and post-test in the scores of adhesion, which was a sub-region of the creative personality characteristics. Third, there were no significant differences in the science inquiry skills between before and after applying the SSC lab program in the scientifically gifted students' classes(p>.05). The results suggest that SSC Lab program is an effective program in scientifically gifted students' classes.

A Multi-thresholding Approach Improved with Otsu's Method (Otsu의 방법을 개선한 멀티 스래쉬홀딩 방법)

  • Thresholding is a fundamental approach to segmentation that utilizes a significant degree of pixel popularity or intensity. Otsu's thresholding employed the normalized histogram as a discrete probability density function. Also it utilized a criterion that minimizes the between-class variance of pixel intensity to choose a threshold value for segmentation. However, the Otsu's method has a disadvantage of repeatedly searching optimal thresholds for the entire range. In this paper, a simple but fast multi-level thresholding approach is proposed by means of extending the Otsu's method. Rather than invoke the Otsu's method for the entire gray range, we advocate that the gray-level range of an image be first divided into smaller sub-ranges, and that the multi-level thresholds be achieved by iteratively invoking this dividing process. Initially, in the proposed method, the gray range of the object image is divided into 2 classes with a threshold value. Here, the threshold value for segmentation is selected by invoking the Otsu's method for the entire range. Following this, the two classes are divided into 4 classes again by applying the Otsu's method to each of the divided sub-ranges. This process is repeatedly performed until the required number of thresholds is obtained. Our experimental results for three benchmark images and fifty faces show a possibility that the proposed method could be used efficiently for pattern matching and face recognition.

Application of Multispectral Remotely Sensed Imagery for the Characterization of Complex Coastal Wetland Ecosystems of southern India: A Special Emphasis on Comparing Soft and Hard Classification Methods

  • This paper makes an effort to compare the recently evolved soft classification method based on Linear Spectral Mixture Modeling (LSMM) with the traditional hard classification methods based on Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis (ISODATA) and Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC) algorithms in order to achieve appropriate results for mapping, monitoring and preserving valuable coastal wetland ecosystems of southern India using Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRS) 1C/1D LISS-III and Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper image data. ISODATA and MLC methods were attempted on these satellite image data to produce maps of 5, 10, 15 and 20 wetland classes for each of three contrast coastal wetland sites, Pitchavaram, Vedaranniyam and Rameswaram. The accuracy of the derived classes was assessed with the simplest descriptive statistic technique called overall accuracy and a discrete multivariate technique called KAPPA accuracy. ISODATA classification resulted in maps with poor accuracy compared to MLC classification that produced maps with improved accuracy. However, there was a systematic decrease in overall accuracy and KAPPA accuracy, when more number of classes was derived from IRS-1C/1D and Landsat-5 TM imagery by ISODATA and MLC. There were two principal factors for the decreased classification accuracy, namely spectral overlapping/confusion and inadequate spatial resolution of the sensors. Compared to the former, the limited instantaneous field of view (IFOV) of these sensors caused occurrence of number of mixture pixels (mixels) in the image and its effect on the classification process was a major problem to deriving accurate wetland cover types, in spite of the increasing spatial resolution of new generation Earth Observation Sensors (EOS). In order to improve the classification accuracy, a soft classification method based on Linear Spectral Mixture Modeling (LSMM) was described to calculate the spectral mixture and classify IRS-1C/1D LISS-III and Landsat-5 TM Imagery. This method considered number of reflectance end-members that form the scene spectra, followed by the determination of their nature and finally the decomposition of the spectra into their endmembers. To evaluate the LSMM areal estimates, resulted fractional end-members were compared with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), ground truth data, as well as those estimates derived from the traditional hard classifier (MLC). The findings revealed that NDVI values and vegetation fractions were positively correlated ($r^2$= 0.96, 0.95 and 0.92 for Rameswaram, Vedaranniyam and Pitchavaram respectively) and NDVI and soil fraction values were negatively correlated ($r^2$ =0.53, 0.39 and 0.13), indicating the reliability of the sub-pixel classification. Comparing with ground truth data, the precision of LSMM for deriving moisture fraction was 92% and 96% for soil fraction. The LSMM in general would seem well suited to locating small wetland habitats which occurred as sub-pixel inclusions, and to representing continuous gradations between different habitat types.

Rating Floor Impact Noise in Apartment Buildings Through Subjective Evaluation Tests (청감실험에 의한 공동주택 바닥충격음의 평가등급 설정)

  • The auditory experiments based on subjective responses were undertaken for the standard heavy and light weight impact noise and rubber ball impact noise, jumping noise to investigate relations between floor Impact noise levels and subjective responses and to establish the upper/lower limits of floor impact noises. As a result, it was shown that relations between floor Impact noise levels and subjective responses was linear and the lower limit of heavy-weight impact noise was L/sub i, Fmax, AW/=46㏈ and the lower limit of light-weight impact noise was L'/sub n,AW/=56㏈. Finally the 3 subjective classes of floor impact noises were established.

Performance Analysis and evaluation of the IEEE 802.11e EDCF (IEEE 802.11e EDCF 성능 분석과 평가)

  • Recently, the IEEE 802.11 working group has announced a new distributed MAC called EDCF to provide service differentiation among traffic classes. With the increasing demand for supporting Quality of Service in IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs, the EDCF is now attracting many researchers' attention due to its practical worth as a standard mechanism. In this paper, we focus on the analytical approach to evaluate the performance of the EDCF. An analytical model is developed to estimate the throughput of the EDCF in saturation (asymptotic) conditions. Extensive simulation studies have been carried out for the validation of the analysis, and they show that it estimates the throughput of the EDCF accurately By utilizing the analytical model, we evaluate the performance of the EDCF. Specifically, we concentrate on discovering the characteristics of the EDCF Parameters, such as CW/Sub min/, CW/Sub max/ and AIFS, in the way that they influence on the performance of the EDCF.
