  • We performed numerical simulation using a DPM (discrete phase model) to identify the optimal operation ranges in two representative PM burners widely used in domestic 500-MW pulverized coal-fired power plants. Recently there has been an increased utilization of low-cost coals such as sub-bituminous coal. We investigate the effects of coal blends on the distribution ratio of coal to air by varying the mass flow rates of pulverized coal and primary air and the particle size. We present and discuss optimal conditions for the distribution ratio of coal to air in PM burners.

  • Efficient use of low rank coals (LRC) have been investigated as a method to cope with recent high oil price. Among the coals used in industry, lignite and sub-bituminous coals are belong to the LRC, and have abundant deposit and are distributed worldwide, but high moisture contents and self ignition properties inhibits their utilization. In this paper, chemical coal cleaning to produce ash-free coal from LRC has been investigated. Two technologies, that is, UCC(Ultra Clean Coal) process removing ash from coal and Hyper Coal process extracting combustibles from coal were compared with. UCC process has merits of simple and reliable when it compared with Hyper Coal process, but the remaining ash contents werehigher than Hyper Coal. Hyper Coal has ash contents under the 200ppm when raw coal is treated with appropriate solvent and ion exchange materials to remove alkali materials in extracted solution. The ash-free coal which is similar grade with oil can be used as alternate oil in the industry, and also used as a high grade fuel for IGCC, IGFC and other advanced combustion technology.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of unburned carbon (UBC) and NOx emissions for pulverized coal when air staging combustion is applied. A two-staged drop tube furnace capable of applying air staging combustion was designed and installed. The combustion of sub-bituminous (Tanito) has been investigated. UBC and the NOx concentration were measured under various temperatures and stoichiometric ratios in unstaged and staged combustion. As a result, UBC decreased and the NOx concentration increased with an increase in stoichiometric ratio and temperature. In particular, the NOx reduction mechanism was activated when the temperature in the fuel rich zone increased. Both UBC and the NOx concentration decreased as the temperature increased in the fuel rich zone. A high NOx reduction effect was obtained, compared to the UBC increase, when the air staging technique was applied.

  • Effect of inherent volatile matters in fuels on electrochemical reactions of anode was investigated for a single direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC). Raw coals used as power source in the DCFC release light gases into the atmosphere under the operating temperature of DCFC ($700^{\circ}C$) by thermal decomposition and only char remained. These exhausted gases change the gas composition around anode and affect the electrochemical oxidation reaction of system. To investigate the effect of produced gases, comparative study was conducted between Indonesian sub-bituminous coal and its char obtained through thermal treatment, carbonizing. Maximum power density of raw coal ($52mW/cm^2$) was appeared higher than that of char ($37mW/cm^2$) because the gases produced from the raw coal during thermal decomposition gave additional positive results to electrochemical reaction of the system. The produced gases from coals were analyzed using TGA and FT-IR. The influence of volatile matters on anodic electrolyteelectrode interface was observed by the equivalent circuit induced from fitting of impedance spectroscopy data.

  • In this study, repowering scenarios are analyzed and evaluated from the economical point of view on a case by case basis. Based on the result of evaluation, the IRR indicates 2.34% on single 750 MW LNG combined cycle unit, 3.56% on 500 MW sub-bituminous PC units and 2.31% on 200 MW circulating fluidized bed combustion units, resulting in not reaching 7% rate of discount rate and being concluded uneconomical. However, proposes that it is most economical and feasible to repower power plant into 750 MW LNG combined cycle unit as long as the economic feasibility can be improved and it is necessary for old anthracite power plant to be repowered than rebuilt under the circumstances of lacking power supply.

  • This study was performed by using an LFR (laminar flow reactor), which can be used to carry out different types of research on coal. In this study, an LFR was used to analyze coal flames, tar and soot yields, and structures of chars for two coals depending on their volatile content. The results show that the volatile content and oxygen concentration have a significant effect on the length and width of the soot cloud and that the length and width of the cloud under combustion conditions are less than those under a pyrolysis atmosphere. At sampling heights until 50 mm, the tar and soot yields of Berau (sub-bituminous) coal, which contains a large amount of volatile matter, are less than those of Glencore A.P. (bituminous) coal because tar is oxidized by the intrinsic oxygen component of coal and by radicals such as OH-. On the other hand, at sampling heights above 50 mm, the tar and soot yields of Berau coal are higher than those of Glencore A.P. coal by reacted residual volatile matter, tar and light gas in char and flame. With above results, it is confirmed that the volatile matter content and the intrinsic oxygen component in a coal are significant parameters for length and width of the soot cloud and yields of the soot. In addition, the B.E.T. results and the images of samples (SEM) obtained from the particle separation system of the sampling probe support the above results pertaining to the yields; the results also confirm the pore development on the char surface caused by devolatilization.

  • In this study, isothermal (350, 375, 400, 425, 450, 500, $850^{\circ}C$) experiments were carried out using a custom-made thermobalance to analyze the thermal decomposition properties of refuse plastic fuel (RPF), which is to be used as a cofiring fuel with a sub-bituminous coal at commercial circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler in Korea. In isothermal pyrolysis results, no change in the reaction model was observed in the temperature range of $375{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ and it was revealed that the first order chemical reaction (F1) is the most suitable among 12 reaction models. The activation energy shows similar results irrespective of application of reaction model in that the activation energy was 39.44 kcal/mol and 36.96 kcal/mol when using Arrhenius equation and iso-conversional method ($0.5{\leq}X{\leq}0.9$) respectively. Mean-while, the devolatilization time ($t_{dev}$) according to particle size (d) of RPF could be expressed as $t_{dev}=10.38d^{2.88}$ at $850^{\circ}C$, operation temperature of CFB and for even distribution and oxidation of RPF in CFB boiler, we found that the relationship of average dispersion distance (x) and particle size was $x{\leq}1.58d^{1.44}$.

  • Gasification kinetics of an Indonesian sub-bituminous coal-char with $CO_2$at elevated pressure was investigated with a pressurised drop tube furnace reactor. The effects of reaction temperature (900~140$0^{\circ}C$), partial pressure of carbon dioxide (0.1~0.5 MPa), and total system pressure (0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 1.5MPa) on gasification rate of the coal char with $CO_2$have been determined. It was found that the gasification rate was dependent on the total system pressure with the same partial pressure and temperature. The $n^{th}$ order rate equation (R=k $P^{g}$ $_{asn}$) was modified to be R=k $P^{g}$ $_{asn}$ $P^{m}$ $_{total}$ to describe the gasification rate where the total system pressure was changed. The gasification reaction rate of char-$CO_2$at high temperature and elevated pressure may be expressed as dX/dt=(174.1)exp(-71.5/RT)( $P_{CO2}$)0.40( $P_{total}$ )0.65(1-X)$^{2}$ 3/.X> 3/.

  • The experiment was designed to compare the char combustion kinetics of pulverized Indonesia coals commonly utilized in Korea power plants. The reaction rate of coal char has been formulated using the external and internal effectiveness factors to describe the diffusion effect quantitatively. The Random Pore Model (RPM) was used for applying internal specific surface area as a function of carbon conversion ratio. Reaction rate was obtained from reaction time using the Wire Heating Reactor (WHR) which can heat and measure the char particle temperature at the same time. BET and TGA were used to obtain physical properties such as internal specific surface area and structural parameter. Three kinds of Indonesia Sub-bituminous coals "BARAMULTI, ENERGYMAN, AGM" were used in order to derive the activation energy and pre-exponential factor. The results of this study showed that the effect of internal diffusion than that of external diffusion is the dominant as comparison of kinetics was reflected in external and internal effectiveness factors. For three kinds of coal char, finally, activation energy of intrinsic kinetics indicates 110~118 kJ/mol.

  • Solid ash-free coal (AFC) samples recovered from solvent-extracted solution by vacuum drying, dilution precipitation and spray drying methods were compared in terms of physical properties and chemical structure. AFC was prepared by using Kideco coal (Indonesian sub-bituminous coal) and polar N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solvent as raw materials. The physical properties of the AFCs were characterized with proximate, ultimate, and calorific value analysis. In analyzing the chemical structure, FTIR and NMR were used. the proximate analysis showed much reduced ash in the AFCs compared to parent raw coal. The FTIR result showed that the extraction solvent was not fully removed from the AFC prepared by vacuum drying. However, the solvent was not detected in the AFC recovered by using dilution precipitation. Dilution precipitation has advantages over the other two methods, since it can be done at relatively low temperature and separate ash-free coal from extraction solvent more effectively.
