A Qualitative Study on the Cause of Low Science Affective Achievement of Elementary, Middle, and High School Students in Korea (초·중·고등학생들의 과학 정의적 성취가 낮은 원인에 대한 질적 연구)

  • This study attempts to analyze the causes of low affective achievement of elementary, middle, and high school students in Korea in science. To this end, a total of 27 students, three to four students per grade, were interviewed by grade from the fourth grade of elementary school to the first grade of high school, and a total of nine teachers were interviewed by school level. In the interview, related questions were asked in five sub-areas of the 'Indicators of Positive Experiences about Science': 'Science Academic Emotion', 'Science-Related Self-Concept', 'Science Learning Motivation', 'Science-Related Career Aspiration', and 'Science-Related Attitude'. Interview contents were recorded, transcribed, and categorized. As a result of examining the causes of low science academic emotion, it was found that students experienced negative emotions when experiments are not carried out properly, scientific theories and terms are difficult, and recording the inquiry results is burdensome. In addition, students responded that science-related self-concept changed negatively due to poor science grades, difficult scientific terms, and a large amount of learning. The reasons for the decline in science learning motivation were the lack of awareness of relationship between science class content and daily life, difficulty in science class content, poor science grades, and lack of relevance to one's interest or career path. The main reason for the decline in science-related career aspirations was that they feel their career path was not related to science, and due to poor science performance. Science-related attitudes changed negatively due to difficulties in science classes or negative feelings about science classes, and high school students recognized the ambivalence of science on society. Based on the results of the interview, support for experiments and basic science education, improvement of elementary school supplementary textbook 'experiment & observation', development of teaching and learning materials, and provision of science-related career information were proposed.

Influence of Female Undergraduates upon Sociality and College Life Satisfaction (여대생의 사회성과 대학생활 만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to understand about the influence of female undergraduates health behavior and health state upon sociality and the influence of sociality upon college life satisfaction. The subjects were 335 female junior-college students with major related to public health in Busan, Daegu, and Gyeongnam and were carried out questionnaire survey on general characteristics, sociality, college life satisfaction, health behavior, health status, and internet addiction. An analytical method was made through chi-square test, t-test, one-way ANOVA, ANOVA for trend, and structural equation modeling(SEM). As a result, the influence of accountability had the greatest influence as sub-factor. Accountability and age had a positive correlation(p<0.001). Accountability was low when self-cognitive body shape was very thin(p=0.005). In sociality, full age(p<0.001), self rated health(p<0.001), and physical education instruction for the 3rd grade of high school(p=0.004) showed direct effect. Also, sociality showed direct influence upon college life satisfaction. The older age, the higher self rated health, and the more instruction for the 3rd grade of high school led to the higher sociality, thereby having been indicated to be higher in college life satisfaction. Accordingly, a multi-dimensional effort is judged to be necessary for reinforcing physical education activity for high school students and for improving their quality of life as a plan for increasing college life satisfaction.

The Effect of Life Style on Eco-Friendly Clothing Practices and Efficacy in Middle School Students (중학생의 라이프스타일이 친환경적인 의생활 실천 및 효능감에 미치는 영향)

  • The world has been demanding a green growing world in order to solve serious environmental pollution and resource depletion. This study aims to identify life style factors that drive eco-friendly clothing practices and efficacy in middle school students. Data was collected from 215 middle school students in Daegu, using a self-administered questionnaire in December 2013. Statistical analyses to determine frequency, average, ANOVA, factor analysis, reliability analysis, and regression analysis were performed using SPSS 21 program. The results of factor analysis indicated that eco-friendly clothing practices were classified into purchasing and management, reuse, washing, and recycle, and eco-friendly clothing practices efficacy was sub-grouped into practice confidence, purchasing and management efficacy, and washing and sharing efficacy, and life style consisted of fashion pursuit, environment pursuit, planned purchasing, and economy. Eco-friendly clothing practices and efficacy were significant differences in sex and grade (p<0.05). Eco-friendly clothing practices were significantly affected by the factors of environment pursuit, planned purchasing, economy of life style, and the factors of practice confidence, purchasing and management efficacy, and washing and sharing efficacy of eco-friendly clothing practices efficacy (p<0.05). The planned purchasing factor of life style significantly affected all the factors of eco-friendly clothing practices efficacy. This study suggests that eco-friendly clothing practices education program could account for the life style factors such as fashion pursuit, environment pursuit, planned purchasing, and economy with gender and grade to be effective for middle school students.

Development of River Recreation Index Model by Synthesis of Water Quality Parameters (수질인자의 합성에 의한 하천 레크리에이션 지수 모델의 개발)

  • In this research, a River Recreation Index Model (RRIM) was developed to provide sufficient information on the water quality of rivers to the public in order to secure safety of publics. River Recreation Index (RRI) is an integrated water quality information for recreation activities in rivers and expressed as the point from 0 to 100. The proposed RRIM consisted of two sub models: Fecal Coliform Model (FCM) and Water Quality Index Model (WQIM). FCM predicted Fecal Coliform Grade (FCG) using a logistic regression and WQIM synthesized water quality parameters of, DO, pH, turbidity and chlorophyll a into Water Quality Index (WQI). FCG and WQI were integrated into RRI by the integrating algorithm. The proposed model was applied to upstream of Gangjeong Weir in Nakdong River, and compared with Real Time Water Quality Index (RTWQI) which is the existing water quality information system for recreation use. The results show that calculated RRI reflected change of integrated water quality parameters well. Especially chlorophyll a showed Pearson correlation coefficient -0.85 with RRI. Also, RRIM produced more conservative index than RTWQI because RRI was calculated considering uncertainty of water quality criteria. Further, RRI showed especially low values when fecal coliform was predicted as low grade.

FOUR-YEAR SURVIVAL RATE OF RBM SURFACE INTERNAL CONNECTION NON-SUBMERGED IMPLANTS AND THE CHANGE OF THE PERI-IMPLANT CRESTAL BONE (RBM 표면처리 내부연결형 비매립 임플란트의 4년 생존율과 주변골 흡수에 관한 임상 및 방사선학적 연구)

  • Implant-supported fixed and removable prostheses provide a proper treatment modality with reliable success. The SS $II^{(R)}$ Implants is a one-stage nonsubmerged threaded titanium implants with Resorbable Blasting Media (RBM) surface developed by Osstem company (Busan, Korea) in October of 2002. This study is to evaluate the survival rate of the SS $II^{(R)}$ Implants for 4 years using radiographic parameters and to review the retrieved implants by the cytotoxicity tests. Since September 2003, 439 SS $II^{(R)}$ implants had been used for 173 patients at Ewha Womans University Medical Center in Korea. Patients consisted of 91 females (52.6 %) and 82 males (47.4 %). The patients' mean age was $42\;{\pm}16$ years, ranging from 21 to 83 years. The follow-up period ranged from 9 to 46 months (mean F/U $24.2\;{\pm}\;10.2$ months). The results are as follows; 1. Of 439 implants, 17 implants were removed and 4-year cumulative survival rate was 96.1%. 2. 82.3% of 17 failed implants were founded during healing phase, and 94.1% of failed fixtures were removed within 5 months after implantation. 3. Crestal bone around the implants was resorbed to 1 mm in 89.0%, to 1 - 2 mm loss of the marginal bone in 8.3%, and the bone loss over 2 mm was occurred in 2.7%. 4. Microscopic examination of the retrieved implants disclosed Grade 0 cytotoxicity in 4 and Grade 1 cytotoxicity in 2 of 6 groups divided according to LOT numbers. Inhibition rate with optical density was acceptable as low as ISO standard.

Analysis of Teaching Behavior and Visual Attention according to Teacher's Career in Elementary Science Inquire-based Class on Respiration (탐구형 초등과학수업 '호흡' 차시에서 교사의 경력에 따른 교수행동 및 시각적 주의 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the teaching behaviors and visual attention according to teacher's career in Elementary Science Inquire-based Class. Participants were four elementary school teachers in Seoul. They were all in grade 5 and taught science. According to the experience of elementary science education, two novice teachers and two expert teachers were identified. Participants taught Respiration in the 'Structure and Function of our Body' in the elementary science fifth grade. The mobile eye tracker used in this study is SMI's ETG 2w, which is a binocular tracking system. In addition, a video camera was installed behind the classroom to record the entire class. We recorded all the contents of the recorded video and analyzed the results. In this study, the actual practice time, participant's visual attention, and decentralized attention ability were analyzed by class phase. The results of the study are as follows. First, there was a difference between planned class time and actual practice time. The novice teachers were having difficulty in reconstructing the contents of education, and the expert teachers were reconstructing the curriculum and interacting with the students with high understanding and application of the curriculum. There were many differences between the novice teachers and the expert teachers in the tour guidance to confirm student activities. Second, if we look at the visual attention on the area related to teaching and learning by class phase, the novice teacher concentrates all the steps in a specific area, expert teachers showed an equal visual attention to meaningful areas of teaching and learning activities. Third, there was a statistically significant difference in activities 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, and 2-2 when the participants' decentralized attention ability. Expert teachers frequently checked students' understanding and interests. There was a lot of interaction with students. It is also shown through the decentralized attention ability that the novice teachers concentrate on a specific area, and the expert teachers have a high degree of decentralized attention ability and visual attention evenly.

The Effect of Health Education on the Performance of Health Promoting Behavior in College Students (건강교육이 대학생의 건강증진 행위에 미치는 영향)

  • This study has been done for the purpose of testing the effect of health education on the performance of health promoting behavior in college students, and identifying the factors affecting health promoting behaviors. A Nonequivalent control group posttest research design was used. Two hundred thirty college students at K College in T city were studied. Of them, 114 who attended a systematic health education session for three hours a week during one semester were the experimental group. And 116 college students who were chosen of matched sampling of grade, class and sex were the control group. This study was conducted from March 1 to July 2, 1995. The instruments used for this study included a survey of general characteristics, perceived health status, self-esteem, health promoting behavior and health locus of control. Analysis of data was done by use of mean, 1-test, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression. The results of this study are summarized as follows : 1) The average item score for the health promoting behavior was low at 2.52. In the sub-categories, the highest degree of performance was ‘harmonious relationships’, following ‘sanitary life’, ‘self-esteem’, ‘rest and sleep’, and ‘emotional support’ and the lowest degree was ‘professional health management’. 2) Hypothesis 1 that the college students who get health education will have a higher degree of health promoting behavior than the college students who do not get health education was accepted. There was a statistically significant difference between the average of the experimentalgroup, 2.60, and the average of the control group, 2.45.(t=11.30, p=0.0009). 3) Hypothesis 2 that the college students who get health education will have a higher score of perceived health status than college students who do not get the health education was rejected. (t=1.13, p=0.289) 4) Performance of health promoting behavior was positively correlated with self-esteem and grade and negatively correlated with perceived health status. 5) The most important factor affecting performance of health promoting behavior was self-esteem. The following suggestions are made based on the above results : 1) Replication of the research is needed to confirm effects of health education. 2) More effective health education programs need to be developed through by modification of teaching methods and content analysis of health education. 3) Other factors affecting health promoting behavior should be identified. 4) Nursing colleges or departments of nursing should make an effort to develop and carry out various health education programs for the health promotion of all college students.

The Effects of Laughing Programs on Elementary Students Anxiety and Self-esteem (웃음프로그램이 초등학생의 불안과 자아존중감에 미치는 효과)

  • Objectives: Find out how it affects anxiety situations and self-esteem targeting the critical period of development of self-esteem in the lower grades in elementary school based on laughter therapy in having a positive influence on physical health promotion and positive emotional cultivation. And to verify the effects of laughter activity was to provide preliminary data on mental health education and guidance of school life. Methods: By targeting Ulsan Y elementary school, second grade 7 class, 191 students conducted test self-esteem and anxiety. Homogeneous group of experimental and control groups were selected in each one class. Classified as experimental group carried out laughter activity programs and control group did not carried out. Also the separation of the application program before and after, then it were performed preliminary-post-further as same checklist. Program coverage period is 12 weeks and 30 minutes per session was conducted twice a week. Differences between the experimental group and the comparison group has conducted the independent samples t-test, and if the difference between the experimental group and the comparison group were verified by performing a variance analysis(Oneway ANOVA) and post multiple comparisons. Results: Analysis of the experimental group decreased anxiety in the post-test than the pre-test as a whole, in particular, sub-areas of concern, shame and shyness was shown to be effective, and decision of the difficulty was not significant by insignificant reduction. In addition, self-esteem was increased in overall score. The score of collective self-esteem and School life self-esteem were more increased, and domestic self-esteem was not significant by slight increases. In contrast, the comparison group showed no significant difference in all areas of anxiety and self-esteem of pre-test and post-test. Conclusions: In experiments on self-esteem and anxiety of lower grade in elementary school through laughter activity program, comparison group it did not show an effect by accident, and experimental group showed meaningful effects that self-esteem was increased and anxiety was reduced. Thus, laughter activity can be seen that improving self-esteem, anxiety reduction and etc, is very beneficial to mental health.

Safety Evaluation on Real Time Operating Systems for Safety-Critical Systems (안전필수(Safety-Critical) 시스템의 실시간 운영체제에 대한 안전성 평가)

  • Safety-Critical systems, such as Plant Protection Systems in nuclear power plant, plays a key role that the facilities can be operated without undue risk to the health and safety of public and environment, and those systems shall be designed, fabricated, installed, and tested to quality standards commensurate with the importance of the functions to be performed. Computer-based Instrumentation and Control Systems to perform the safety-critical function have Real Time Operating Systems to control and monitoring the sub-system and executing the application software. The safety-critical Real Time Operating Systems shall be designed, analyzed, tested and evaluated to have capability to maintain a high integrity and quality. However, local nuclear power plants have applied the real time operating systems on safety critical systems through Commercial Grade Item Dedication method, and this is the reason of lack of detailed methodology on assessing the safety of real time operating systems, expecially to the new developed one. This paper presents the methodology and experiences of safety evaluation on safety-critical Real Time Operating Systems based upon design requirements. This paper may useful to develop and evaluate the safety-critical Real Time Operating Systems in other industry to ensure the safety of public and environment.

Electrochemical and Sludge Dissolution Behavior During a Copper Removal Process for Chemical Cleaning on the Secondary Side of Nuclear Steam Generators (원전 증기발생기 2차측 화학세정을 위한 제동공정중의 전기화학적 거동 및 슬러지용해 거동)

  • Two major goals for chemical cleaning on the secondary side of nuclear steam generators are to remove sludge effectively and to minimize corrosion of base metals. In this work, electrochemical and sludge dissolution behaviors have been investigated in order to find out which parameters are critical and important during a copper removal process for chemical cleaning and to evaluate safety aspects and effectiveness of two major copper removal processes developed commercially in foreign countries. Hydrogen peroxide is vert effective for the process to use EDTA, NH$_4$OH and EDA at 38$^{\circ}C$ to control the potential of copper in a potential range sood for copper sludge removal. Corrosion rates for carbon steel SA 285 Gr.C and Alloy 600 are very small during this process if it is controlled properly. However, the corrosion rate of SA 285 Gr.C will be increased greatly if its corrosion potential is maintained below -450mV. The process to use EDA and ammonium carbonate is effective at 6$0^{\circ}C$ to dissolve copper sludge if the corrosion potential of copper can be controlled above -200mV. However, it is very difficult to raise the corrosion potential of copper to this range by air blowing and stirring.
