The Effects of Problem-Based Learning on Problem Solving Ability and Collaborative Self-efficacy of Dental Hygiene Major Students (문제중심학습(PBL)이 치위생학 전공 학생들의 문제해결능력과 협력적 자기효능감에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose : This study was purposed to analyze the effectiveness of PBL (Problem-Based Learning) classes and to derive class improvement plans. Methods : The subjects of the study were 48 students who took the 4th grade clinical dental hygiene course at S University located in Chungcheongnam-do of South Korea in 2021. A single-group pre and post experimental study was designed to verify whether there were significant changes in the research variables of students who participated in the class to which problem-based learning was applied. A paired-sample t-test was conducted for the collected data of 46 respondents. Results : As a result, the degree of improvement in problem clarification, cause analysis, and alternative development among the five sub-areas of problem-solving ability was statistically significant. This means that the problem-based learning class positively affects dental hygiene major students' ability to clarify problems, the ability to analyze causes to collect and analyze information, and the ability to develop alternatives to make decisions, thereby improving overall problem-solving abilities. However, the improved post-score was not statistically significant in the planning/execution and performance evaluation of the remaining two subdomains. In addition, post-scores of the leader aspect, opinion exchange, opinion evaluation, and opinion integration, which are sub-domains of collaborative self-efficacy, all showed great statistical significance. Problem-based learning improved the collaborative efficacy of dental hygiene major students overall by positively influencing the ability to lead a team, exchange and evaluate each other's views, and constructively integrate different views. Conclusion : It was found that both the subject's problem-solving ability and cooperation efficiency improved under the influence of problem-based learning. On the other hand, implications for improvement of the future class such as the necessity of supplementing strategies to promote planning and execution ability for problem solving, and ability to evaluate problem solving performance was suggested.

  • The low-temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) is a crucial factor in the development of space-grade resistors for temperature stability. Consequently, extensive research is underway to achieve zero TCR. In this study, resistors were deposited by co-sputtering nickel-chromium-based composite compositions, metals showing positive TCR, with SiO2, introducing negative TCR components. It was observed that achieving zero TCR is feasible by adjusting the proportion of negative TCR components in the deposited thin film resistors within certain compositions. Additionally, the correlation between TCR and deposition conditions, such as sputtering power, Ar pressure, and surface roughness, was investigated. We anticipate that these findings will contribute to the study of resistors with very low TCR, thereby enhancing the reliability of space-level resistors operating under high temperatures.

Effect of Restriction of Vitamin A and D on Carcass Characteristics in Hanwoo Steers (비타민 A와 D의 공급제한이 거세 한우의 육질등급에 미치는 영향)

  • Sixty Hanwoo steers(15 months of age; 409±29.2 kg of BW) were used to evaluate the effects of dietary vitamins A and D restriction on carcass characteristics. Steers were allotted randomly to 1 of 4 treatments: Control(diet supplemented with vitamins A, D and E), -A (diet supplemented with vitamins D and E), -D(diet supplemented with vitamins A and E) and -AD(diet supplemented with vitamin E only). Steers were fed the experimental diet for a period of 8 months(until 23 months of age), and then supplemented with vitamins A and D at 0.05% of the diet(as fed-basis) from 24 to 26 months of age, and at 0.1% of the diet from 27 to 31 months of age(harvesting time). Dietary restriction of vitamins A and D did not affect DM intake, daily gain and feed conversion ratio. But the concentration of serum retinol was significantly(P<0.05) decreased by vitamin A restriction with the lowest concentration being seen at 23 months of age(345.0 ㎍/L and 326.7㎍/L for control and -D treatment versus 169.3 ㎍/L and 175.4 ㎍/L for -A and -AD treatments). The serum concentration of 25(OH)D3 was also decreased significantly(P<0.05) by vitamin D restriction and the lowest concentration was seen at 18 months of age(53.7ng/ml and 61.8ng/ml for control and - A treatment versus 24.0 ng/ml and 24.5 ng/ml for -D and -AD treatments). After the restriction period of vitamins A and D, the concentrations of retinol and 25(OH)D3 for - A, -D and -AD treatments were recovered at those of control. Dietary restriction of vitamins A and D did not affect carcass weight, backfat thickness, ribeye area, quality grade and yield grade. But marbling score was significantly increased by vitamin A restriction compared with control(6.73, 6.87 and 5.73 for -A, -AD and control, respectively). The results of the present study suggested that dietary vitamin A restriction could improve marbling score in Hanwoo steers.

Concurrent Chemoradiation Therapy in Stage III Non-small Cell Lung Cancer (III 기 비소세포성 폐암에서 Cisplatin-방사선동시병합요법의 효과)

  • Purpose : This study was tried to evaluate the Potential benefits of concurrent chemoradiation therapy (low dose daily cisplatin combined with split course radiation therapy) compared with conventional radiation therapy alone in stage III non-small cell lung cancer. The end points of analyses were response rate. overall survival, survival without locoregional failure, survival without distant metastasis, prognostic factors affecting survival and treatment related toxicities. Materials and Methods : Between April 1992 and March 1994, 32 patients who had stage III non-small cell lung cancer were treated with concurrent chemoradiation therapy. Radiation therapy for 2 weeks (300 cGy given 10 times up to 3000 cGy) followed by a 3 weeks rest period and then radiation therapy for 2 more weeks (250 cGy given 10 times up to 2500 cGy) was combined with $6mg/m^2$ of cisplatin. Follow-up period ranged from 13 months to 48 months with median of 24 months. Historical control group consisted of 32 patients who had stage III non-small cell lung cancer were received conventionally fractionated (daily 170-200 cGy) radiation therapy alone. Total radiation dose ranged from 5580 cGy to 7000 cGy with median of 5940 cGy. Follow-up Period ranged from 36 months to 105 months with median of 62 months. Result : Complete reponse rate was higher in chemoradiation therapy (CRT) group than radiation therapy (RT) group (18.8% vs. 6.3%, CRT group showed lower in-field failure rate compared with RT group(25% vs. 47%. The overall survival rate had no significant differences in between CRT group and RT group (17.5% vs. 9.4% at 2 years). The survival without locoregional failure (16.5% vs. 5.3% at 2 years) and survival without distant metastasis (17% vs. 4.6% at 2 years) also had no significant differences. In subgroup analyses for Patients with good performance status (Karnofsky performance scale 80), CRT group showed significantly higher overall survival rate compared with RT group (62.5% vs. 15.6% at 2 years). The prognostic factors affecting survival rate were performance status and pathologic subtype (squamous cell cancer vs. nonsquamous cell cancer) in CRT group. In RT alone group, performance status and stage (IIIa vs IIIb) were identified as a Prognostic factors. RTOG/EORTC grade 2-3 nausea and vomiting(22% vs 6% and bone marrow toxicities (25% vs. 15.6% were significantly higher in CRT group compared with RT alone group. The incidence of RTOG/EORTC grade 3-4 pulmonary toxicity had no significant differences in between CRT group and RT group (16% vs. 6%. The incidence of WHO grade 3-4 pulmonary fibrosis also had no significant differences in both group (38% vs. 25%. In analyses for relationship of field size and Pulmonary toxicity, the Patients who treated with field size beyond 200cm2 had significantly higher rates of pulmonary toxicities. Conclusion : The CRT group showed significantly higher local control rate than RT group. There were no significant differences of survival rate in between two groups. The subgroup of patients who had good performance status showed higher overall survival rate in CRT group than RT group. In spite of higher incidence of acute toxicities with concurrent chemoradiation therapy, the survival gain in subgroup of patients with good performance status were encouraging. CRT group showed higher rate of early death within 1 year, higher 2 year survival rate compared with RT group Therefore, to evaluate the accurate effect on survival of concurrent chemoradiation therapy, systematic follow-up for long term survivors are needed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a brain-based science teaching and learning model on the science related attitudes, scientific inquiry skills and science knowledge of the 2nd graders in Intelligent Life course. For this study, 117 elementary students from four classes of the 2nd grade in Seoul were selected. In the comparison group, traditional instruction was implemented and in the experimental group, instruction according to brain-based science teaching and learning model was implemented for four weeks. The results of this study were as follows : There were little differences between the comparison and experimental groups in terms of the science related attitudes except for the sub-domains of interest and curiosity. And brain-based science teaching and learning model programs improved a few scientific inquiry skills, especially observation and classification. In addition, the experimental groups showed a positive effect on science knowledge. In conclusion, brain-based science teaching and learning model programs were more effective in improvement of the science related attitudes, scientific inquiry skills and science knowledge of elementary students.

The Effectiveness of IIM-based Science Writhing Lessson on Science Process Skills and Self-Directed Learning in Elementary Science-Gifted Students (IIM 기반 과학 글쓰기 수업이 초등과학영재의 과학 탐구 능력과 자기 주도적 학습능력에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of IIM-based science writhing lesson on the science process skills and self-directed learning in elementary science-gifted students. To verify research problems, the subjects of this study were forth-grade students selected from one classes of an elementary science-gifted class in Busan National Universty of education : the research group is composed of twenty students who were participated in IIM-based science writing lessons. During 12 weeks, the IIM-based science writing lessons was executed in the reasearch group. Post-test showed following results: First, the research group showed a significant improvement in the science process skill. We look into detailly this, the research group showed a significant improvement in the basis science skill. The sub-factor 'expectation' of the science process skill effects a significant improvement. Second, the research group showed a significant improvement in the self-directed learning. In conclusion, IIM-based science writing lesson was more effective on science process skill and self-directed learning. However, since the study has a limit on an object of the study and the applied program, the additional studies need to be conducted with an extended comparative group and program.

A Study on the Performance of Health Promoting Behavior in College Students (대학생의 건강증진 행위에 관한 연구)

  • This study has been done for the purpose of identifying performance of health promoting behavior and the variables affecting health promoting behavior in college students. 350 college students at D university in P city were chosen by cluster sampling. The data were collected by questionnaire from December 4 to December 20, 1996. The instruments used for this study included health promoting lifestyle, self-esteem, health locus of control and perceived health status. The data were analyzed by use of mean, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The average item score for the health promoting behavior was low at 2.49. In the sub-categories, the highest degree of performance was , 2.99, and the lowest degree was , 1.43. 2. There was no statistically significant difference between the mean for health promoting behavior of the female, 2.49 and that of the male, 2.48(t=-0.3664, p=.7143). But there was statistically significant difference among the mean for health promoting behavior classified by grade(F=3.67, p=.0126). 3. Performance of health promoting behavior was positively correlated with and , and negatively correlated with and . 4. The most important factor affecting performance of health promoting behavior was .

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of parent-bonding patterns & environmental variables on rural high school students' self-differentiationf. The subjects were 600 rural high school students in the 2nd grade. The rural high school students' self-differentiation, according to parent-bonding style & environmental variables were researched with DOSS(Differentiation of self Scale) PBI(Parent-bonding Instrument) & environmental Scale. The data were analyzed by frequency & Reliability, ANOVA (scheffe'test) & Regression analysis of SPSS PC+ program. The main results were as follows. First, In P-B patterns generally frequencies of mother's care were higher than father's But in overprotection frequencies of father's were higher. Degree of rural highschool students' self-differentiation was on the level of 2.84 Second, According to parent-bonding patterns, the difference of self-differentiation were as follow. In P-B patters, father and mother on each level of P<.001 brought differences in the self-differentiation of the 4 sub-divisions Third, In short the effect on self-differentiation showed that in family environmental variables, parent's scolding, gender, family atmosphere & health conditions are crucial variables in self-differentiation and in P-B patterns, father's overprotection, mother's care, father's care are all influential on self-differentiation.

Gleason's Grading of Prostatic Adenocarcinoma: Inter-Observer Variation Among Seven Pathologists at a Tertiary Care Center in Oman

  • Prostatic adenocarcinoma is the commonest solid malignancy seen in Omani elderly males 60-80 years of age. The Gleason grade is the most widely used grading system for prostatic carcinoma and is recommended by the World Health Organization. A peer review was carried out at the Pathology Department of Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH), Oman, to assess the quality of reporting at the center. The aim of this study was to determine inter-observer variation among 7 pathologists working at a tertiary care center in Oman. A total of 47 consecutive prostatic biopsies were interdependently reviewed by seven pathologists and the results obtained were compared with each other and the original diagnosis. This peer review indicated a fair inter-observer agreement (0.482) among 7 pathologists in the department, with fair to moderate agreement when the results were compared to the reported diagnosis, comparable to the published literature. Dual and sub-specialty reporting are being instituted to improve the performance in this vital aspect of pathology.
