  • Conventional lithium ion batteries suffer from notorious safety issues caused by inevitable lithium dendrite formation and proliferation during over/fast charging processes. The lithium dendrites or mechanical damage on the separator induce internal short circuit in LiB that generates extensive amount of heat within contacted electrode surfaces through the separator. During this heat generation, conventional polyolefin separators shrinks dramatically, and increasing short circuit pathway, that causes the battery to explode. To overcome this serious issue, ceramic coated separators are developed in commercial LiB to enhance thermal and mechanical stability. In this paper, various size(IL = 488.5 nm, I = 538.7 nm, S = 810.3 nm, D = 1533.3 nm) of $Al_2O_3$ particles are coated using styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) / carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC) binder on PE separator to investigate its thermal stability and electrochemical effect on LiB coin cell with NCM cathode and Li metal anode.

  • In this study, effects of both the grafted ABS-g-MAH and the added graphene oxide (GO) on the impact strength of polycarbonate (PC)/poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) blends were discussed. The PC/ABS blends and PC/ABS/GO composites were fabricated by using twin screw extruder with ABS-g-MAH as a compatibilizer. The ABS-g-MAH was prepared by melting extrusion of ABS and maleic anhydride (MAH) with DCP (dicumyl peroxide) as an initiator using twin screw extruder and the synthesis of ABS-g-MAH was confirmed by the presence of carbonyl group (C=O) peak at $1780cm^{-1}$ of FT-IR spectrum. According to the thermal, rheological, and impact properties of PC/ABS blends, 5 phr (parts per hundred resin) of compatibilizer was chosen as an optimum content for the PC/ABS/GO composites. It was observed that the thermal decomposition of ABS/PC/GO composites increased with GO contents, but there was no significant changes or a decrease in the impact strength. Also the composite fabricated by ABS/GO showed small increase in the impact strength. From the result of the dynamic rheometer to observe the processing properties, the complex viscosities of PC/ABS blend including the compatibilizer increased, but the complex viscosities of composites added GO were not changed.

  • Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is an extremely toxic gas frequently produced during the incineration of plastics, such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS). A victim of a fire who has inhaled smoke could have cyanide in the blood. Therefore, cyanide could be a good marker for a post-mortem examination of a fire as well as carboxyhemoglobine (COHb) test of blood samples. For a particular fire case, a burned body with a suicide note was found inside a burned vehicle. Even though the COHb value is conclusive evidence, measuring the COHb for denatured blood might be difficult due to severe thermal denaturation or the formation of methemoglobin (MetHb). To overcome this difficulty, cyanide could be used as an indicator when investigating the death of a fire victim. In this study, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was adopted to measure the levels of cyanide in the blood through derivatization with pentafluorobenzyl bromide (PFBBr) under cation surfactant by scan and SIM mode. The concentration of cyanide in the blood of heart blood and brain of the victim was found to be 0.36 µg/mL and 1.20 µg/mL respectively, which was higher than the average value (0.041 µg/mL) found in the blood of 14 people who smoked.

  • To see the effect of chemical surface modification, the carbon black surfaces were treated with three types of chemicals (KOH, $H_3PO_4$, and benzene). Vulcanization and mechanical properties of a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) were investigated depending on the chemical treatments. The surface free energy increased considerably with the treatments by both the acid (HCB) and base (KCB), but only a slight increase was observed for benzene treatment(BCB). The BCB showed the highest level of the London dispersive component. The vulcanization reaction was found to be faster in the order of KCB-SBR> BCB-SBR> VCB-SBR(virgin) > HCB-SBR. The difference in minimum and maximum torque of rheocurve, representing the degree of crosslinking, was found to be higher for the BCB-SBR compared to those of VCB-SBR, KCB-SBR, and HCB-SBR. The BCB-SBR and KCB-SBR showed the improved tensile and dynamic mechanical properties. A linear relationship was found to exist between the London dispersive component of surface free energy and mechanical properties.

  • Polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) blends were prepared using a high shear extruder to investigate their thermal decomposition and mechanical properties with shear rate and shear time. In this experiment, high shear rate, from 1000 to 3000 rpm, in blending process was applied for 10 to 40 sec, respectively. At high shear rate over than 2000 rpm, the initial decomposition temperature was dropped significantly compared to a compounded sample because of thermal decomposition of the blend by high shear. Consequently, high shear processing gave an important effect on the mechanical and thermal properties of the PC/ABS blend. In particular, elongation of the blend decreased significantly with shear rate.

  • In this research the physical properties of polymer modified mortar containing pulverized FRP(Fiber-Reinforced Plastics) wastes fine powder as a part of fine aggregate were investigated. Styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) latex, polyacrylic ester(PAE) emulsion and ethylene-vinyl acetate(EVA) emulsion were used as Polymer modifier. Polymer modified mortars containing FRP wastes fine powder were prepared with various FRP wastes fine powder replacement(5∼30 wt%) for fine aggregate and polymer-cement ratios(5∼20 wt%). The water-cement ratio, water absorption rates and hot water immersion test, compressive and flexural strengths of polymer modified mortars were tested and the results compared to those of ordinary portland cement mortar. As the results, compressive and flexural strengths of polymer modified mortar containing FRP wastes fine powder depend on the contents of FRP wastes fine powder, type and additional amounts of polymer modifier. Some of them showed higher compressive and flexural strengths than those of ordinary portland cement mortar. Especially, SBR-modified mortar showed the highest strengths properties among three types of polymer modifier. Also water absorption rates, compressive and flexural strengths of SBR-modified mortar were more superior than those of PAE or EVA-modified mortar. The optimum mix proportions of SBR-modified mortar was 20 wt% of polymer-cement ratio and 20 wt% of FRP wastes fine powder replacement. Otherwise heat cured polymer modified mortar accelerated the improvement of early compressive and flexural strengths.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are used in various composite materials to enhance electrical, thermal and mechanical properties of composite materials. In this study, we investigate the wear characteristics of polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC/ABS) blends containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). PC/ABS blends are commonly used in many industrial applications such as cellular phones and display cases and MWCNTs have been added to the PC/ABS blends to improve their electromagnetic interference shielding (EMS). We performed wear tests on PC/ABS blends containing MWCNTs under reciprocating linear sliding conditions with chrome steel balls as a counterpart material. The normal loads were 10, 30, 50, 70, 100 N, the sliding speed was 10 mm/s, the stroke length was 15 mm, and the tests lasted 900 s. The MWCNTs included in the PC/ABS blends lower the wear volume and friction coefficient of the composites. We analyzed the wear debris collected from the composites during the tests in terms of the MWCNT concentration using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The results show that the quantity of MWCNTs in the debris is proportional to the concentration of MWCNTs in the composite, indicating that the exposure of the MWCNTs to environments by wear could be increased with their concentration in the composite.

  • Identifying the components of residues that are not completely burned at the sites of fires site can provide valuable information for tracing the causes of fires. In order to clarify the types of plastic combustion residues found at the scenes of fires, we studied the residue formed after the combustion of polyethylene (PE) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). Plastic samples were burned at 200, 300, 350, 400, and $500^{\circ}C$ for 3 min using a cone calorimeter, and the changes in weight and combustion products were observed. The powder products obtained by lyophilization and pulverization of the combustion products obtained at each temperature were analyzed by a Fourier transform-near infrared (FT-NIR) spectrometer. When the PE samples were burned, the weight did not change up to $350^{\circ}C$, however a significant change in the weight could be measured above $400^{\circ}C$. The principal component analysis (PCA) of the FT-NIR spectra of the PE and ABS samples obtained at each temperature confirmed that the combustion residues at each temperature were PE and ABS, respectively. Therefore, the types of unburned plastics found at the sites of fires can be confirmed rapidly by near infrared spectroscopy.

  • In this study, styrene butadiene rubber(SBR)/organoclay nanocomposites were manufactured using the latex method with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES) as a modifier. The X-ray diffraction(XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) images, Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy, swelling ratio and mechanical properties were measured in order to study the interaction between filler and rubber according to the mixing temperature in the internal mixer. In the case of SBR/APTES-MMT compounds, the dispersion of the silicates within the rubber matrix was enhanced, and thereby, the mechanical properties were improved. The characteristic bands of Si-O-C in APTES disappeared after hydrolysis reaction in the MMT-suspension solution and the peak of hydroxyl group was increased. Therefore the formation of chemical bonds between the hydroxyl group generated from APTES on the silicate surface and the ethoxy group of bis(triethoxysilylpropyl) tetrasulfide(TESPT) was possible. Consequently, the 300% modulus of SBR/APTES-MMT compounds was further improved in the case of using TESPT as a coupling agent. However, the silanization reaction between APTES and TESPT was not affected significantly according to the increase of mixing temperature in the internal mixer.

  • In this study, effect of different amounts of sulfur and vulcanization accelerators in the acrylonitrile styrene-butadiene rubber (AN-SBR)/silica compounds on the properties of tire tread compound were studied. As a result, cure rate and degree of cross-linking of the compounds were increased due to enhanced cross-linking reactivity by the increased amounts of sulfur and vulcanization accelerators. Also, abrasion resistance and the mechanical properties such as hardness and modulus of the compounds were improved by enhanced degree of cross-linking of the compounds. For the dynamic properties, tan ${\delta}$ value at $0^{\circ}C$ was increased due to the increase of glass transition temperature ($T_g$) by enhanced degree of cross-linking of the compound, and tan ${\delta}$ value at $60^{\circ}C$ was decreased. Initial cure time ($t_1$) showed the linear relationship with tan ${\delta}$ value at $60^{\circ}C$. This result is attributed that reduced initial cure time ($t_1$) of compounds by applying increased amount of curatives can form cross-linking in early stage of vulcanization that may suppress development of filler network. This result is verified by observation on the surface of annealed compounds using AFM (atomic force microscopy). Consequently, decreased initial cure time is considered a very important parameter to reduce tan ${\delta}$ at $60^{\circ}C$ through reduced re-agglomeration of silica particles.
