  • A series of styrene-butadiene-styrene/aluminium (SBR/Al) composites have been compounded with different weight ratios of Al. The prepared SBR-Al systems have been characterized for different mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tensile modulus and surface hardness have improved with the increase in content of Al in SBR matrix. This may is because of the increase in polymer-filler interaction. The electrical properties such as volume conductivity, surface resistivity, dielectric constant, dissipation factor (tan delta), and break down voltage of SBR/Al composites have been measured with reference to volume fraction $(V_{f}),$ frequency and temperature. The resistance of the SBR-Al composites is found to be ohmic. The voltage-current (V-I) characteristics for SBR-Al also exhibit a linear relationship indicating the ohmic behavior.

  • Stable poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) [P(St-co-DVB)] micro spheres with narrow size distribution were synthesized in the presence of 2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimethyl valeronitrile) (V-65) and co-initiator in an acetone/water mixture in the precipitation polymerization at $53^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. Potassium peroxodisulfate (KPS), ammonium peroxodisulfate (APS) and sodium peroxodisulfate (NaPS) were used as co-initiators. The optimum ratio of acetone to water for the formation of a narrow distribution of P(St-co-DVB) particles was 49:11 (g/g). The optimum co-initiator compositions for narrow distribution were 9:1 (g/g) for V-65 to KPS, 11:1 for V-65 to APS and 6:1 for V-65 to NaPS. The yield for these compositions was $54{\sim}57%$ and the largest particle size was obtained with the lowest zeta-potential and CV values. From the XPS measurements, the charge density was increased but the zeta potential decreased with increasing sulfur content, implying that the sulfate group provides the electrostatic stabilization on the particle surface. This suggested that the self-crosslinking between styrene and DVB, the electrostatic stabilization of initiators, and the balanced hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties of the solvents are responsible for the formation of stable P(St-co-DVB) spherical particles with narrow size distribution.

  • SEBS-clay hybrid membranes were prepared by melt intercalation method with internal mixer. In the hybrid, the amount of clay content was fixed to 5 phr. MMT was intercalated or exfoliated by the ionomer and it was confirmed by X-ray diffraction method. D-spacing of the characteristic peak from MMT plate in SAXD was moved and diminished. Gas permeability, mechanical properties and thermal properties of the SEBS-clay hybrid membranes were investigated. Gas permeability through the SEBS-clay hybrid membranes decreased due to increased tortuosity made by intercalation of clay in SEBS.

  • The synthesis of well-defined poly(styrene-b-isobutylene-b-styrene) (SIBS) triblock copolymers was accomplished by cationic sequential block copolymerization of isobutylene (IB) with styrene (St) using 1,4-di(2-chloro-2-propyl) benzene (DCC) /$TiCl_4$/2,6-di-tert-butylpyridine(DtBP) as an initiating system in methyl chloride ($CH_3Cl$)/methylcyclohexane(MeChx) (50/50 v/v) solvent mixture at $-80^{\circ}C$. The triblock copolymers exhibited excellent thermoplastic and elastomeric characteristics. Tensile strengths and Shore hardness increased with increasing polystyrene (PS) content, while elongation at break decreased. The blood-compatibility of SIBS was assessed by SEM observation of the platelet adhesion, blood clotting time and haemolysis ratio. The haemolysis ratios were below 5% which met the medical materials standard. The platelet adhesion test further indicated that SIBS block copolymers had a good blood compatibility.

  • The new dinuclear CGC (constrained geometry complexes) with indenyl and methyl sub-stituted indenyl and polymethylene bridge have been synthesized, and the copolymerization of ethylene and styrene has been studied in the presence of methylalumionoxane. The activity of 12-methylene and 9-methylene bridged dinuclear CGC were 4 times higher than that of 6-methylene bridged dinucleay CGC. This result might be understood by the implication that the steric effect rather than the electronic effect nay play a major role to direct the polymerization behavior of the dinuclear CGC. The dinuclear CGCs are very efficient to incorporate styrene in backbone. The styrene contents in the formed co-polymers ranged from 6 to 45 mol% according to the polymerization conditions. The melting temperature of copolymers disappeared at high content of styrene (about 11 mol%) There is no styrene-styrene diblock sequence in copolymers. This result Indicates that the dinuclear CGC are very effective to generate random copolymer of ethylene and styrene.

  • This study focuses on the investigation of the impregnation of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) crosslinked with poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSA-MA) to porous polyethylene membrane for the fuel cell application. The membranes were characterized by the measurements of the water content, contact angle, FTIR spectra, thermal gravimetric analysis, ion exchange capacity, proton conductivity, methanol permeability and elastic modulus. The existence of hydrophilic moieties in the impregnated membranes was confirmed by contact angle and FTIR measurements. The impregnated PVA/PSSAMA(90:10) membrane exhibited a higher ion exchange capacity (1.2 meq./g dry membrane) than Nafion membrane (0.91 meq./g dry membrane). Through the elastic modulus measurement, the dimensional stability of the resulting membranes was expected to increase higher than the polyethylene membranes. The methanol crossover and water content decreased even if the PSSA-MA content increased due to the reduction of the free volume.

  • Amount of styrene and divinylbenzene(DVB) was adjusted under injection of nitrogen, copolymer having crosslink of 1%, 2% and 5% was synthesized and zinc chloride was added to it. Put into benzene, swell it, add potassium iodide and 1-aza-15-crown-5 of 21.93g in toluene solution and functional resin which can adsorb heavy metal ions by stir reflex at $55^{\circ}C$ for 30 hours was synthesized. The content of divinylbenzene of this resin was increased as crosslink increase, macroporous gets smaller and the content of chlorine was reduced, which affects macrocyclic ligand in the process of substitution and content of nitrogen was also reduced. And the form of functional synthetic resin was distorted by substitution reaction of hydrogen and chlorine atoms.

  • Polypropylene (PP)-SEBS/silicate composites with PP content of 35, 40, and 45wt% were fabricated by melt compounding at $200^{\circ}C$, using lab scale Brabender mixer. The content of silicate was fixed at 5wt%. The thermal properties of the PP-SEBS/silicate composites were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The melting temperature of PP-SEBS compound decreased up to $141^{\circ}C$ with SEBS content. TGA result indicates an increase in degradation temperature when the silicate was added in the PP-SEBS compound. The rheological properties of the compounds were measured by dynamic Rheometer. PP-SEBS/silicate composite indicates higher shear thinning and elastic property than PP-SEBS compound. Van Gurp-Palmen analysis was applied in order to certify an increase in elasticity.

  • Influence of low molecular weight styrene-butadiene rubber (liquid SBR) on properties of a silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds was studied. Viscosity of the silica-filled SBR compound decreased by adding the liquid SBR. The crosslink density decreased and the cure rate became slower as the liquid SBR content increased. The modulus and tensile strength decreased while the elongation at break became longer by increasing the liquid SBR content. The abrasion losses were nearly the same irrespective of the liquid SBR content. This might be due to the improvement of silica dispersion by adding the liquid SBR. Considering the experimental results, it was believed that addition of small amount of the liquid SBR (less than 5 phr) was desirable to improve properties of silica-filled SBR compounds.

  • Effects of type and loading level of process aids on the rheological and mechanical properties of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compound were investigated. Five commercial grades of process aids composed of fatty acids and their various derivatives such as metal salts, esters, alcohols and amides were selected. The reduction in Mooney and shear viscosities was higher for metal salt-type process aids but lower for the process aids containing high molecular weight fatty acid alcohols and esters with increasing the loading of process aids. Tensile modulus generally decreased, while heat-build-up increased with increased process aids content. No considerable effect was observed for ulimate properties such as tensile strength and elongation at break.
