Cultural Capacity and Intercultural Communication of University Students in Nursing (간호대학생의 문화적 역량과 문화 간 의사소통 관계)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the cultural capacity of college nursing students and the relationship of intercultural communication. Methods: The participants were 200 students in colleges of nursing from 6 universities in C city, who understood the purpose of the study and agreed to participate. Collected data were analyzed with t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and stepwise regression analysis using SPSS/WIN 22.0. Results: Cultural sensitivities in this study (r=.372, p<.001), cultural knowledge (r=.399, p=.001), cultural awareness (r=.547, p<.001), and cultural technology (r=.550, p<.001) each showed a statistically significant correlation with intercultural communication skills. Conclusion: The results of this study show that reinforcement of the cultural and intercultural communication ability of college nursing students, in-depth exploration of the cultural area and religious inspection, cultural and professional backgrounds, assessment and consideration of cultural characteristics, nursing diagnosis, and health appropriate to the cultural background. It is suggested that education such as service provision should be conducted systematically.

Nursing Students' Image of Nurse and Satisfaction with Clinical Practice (간호학생의 간호이미지와 임상실습만족도)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to identify the relationship between image of nursing and satisfaction with clinical practice of nursing students Method: A descriptive research design that examined relationship between image of nurse and satisfaction with clinical practice of nursing students was used for this study, All 350 subjects were obtained by convenience sampling from three nursing diploma programs. The data were collected using an self-reporting questionnaire from May 1st to 31st, 2003. Collected data were analysed on SPSS Win 11.0. Result: There is a significant relationship between image of nurse and satisfaction with clinical practice of nursing student. Classical image of nurse, older age, and satisfaction with nursing of nursing students were identified as the factors that influence significantly on their satisfaction with clinical practice. Conclusions: Nursing student is given a chance to prepare themselves be a nurse through well-structured clinical nursing practice. Therefore, it's important to enhance nursing students' image of nurse and satisfaction with nursing in order to enhance their satisfaction with clinical practice.

Nursing Students' Practice Experience on Community Visiting Nursing (간호대학생의 지역사회 방문건강관리 실습경험)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of nursing students' practice on community visiting nursing. Methods: For this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with a total of 12 nursing students, and data were collected through individual in depth interviews from September to December 2018. The data were analyzed using the phenomenological analysis method suggested by Colaizzi. Results: The experience of visiting nursing practice consisted of four themes. Four themes are 'Understanding visiting nursing work: Tight time and problems to overcome', 'Understanding visiting nursing object: People waiting for a visiting nurse', 'Visiting nursing practice experience: Sometimes to get reprimanded but rewarding practice', and 'Expectations for visiting nursing business: Hopes for development'. Conclusion: Findings from this study presented vivid experiences of nursing students who on community home visit nursing. Community visiting nursing practice became an opportunity for students to understand visiting nursing and target people and to think about the necessity of visiting nursing and future development direction. It is necessary to develop an institutional and policy basis with regard to the increasing number and role expansion of community visit nurses.

The Convergent effect of Ego-resilience, Nursing professionalism, and Social support on Department satisfaction in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 자아탄력성, 간호전문직관, 사회적 지지가 학과만족에 미치는 융복합적 영향)

  • The study were to identify the effect of ego-resilience, nursing professionalism, social support on department satisfaction in nursing students. Data were collected from April to May 2017 from 272 nursing students. The study tools were ego-resilience, nursing professionalism, social support, department satisfaction. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, multiple linear regression using SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. The result showed that the difference in department satisfaction relating to general characteristics were significant for reason for choosing a department, student activity, academic record. The correlation among ego-resilience, nursing professionalism, social support, department satisfaction were significant, and the significant factors influencing department satisfaction in nursing students were social support, nursing professionalism, ego-resilience. It is necessary to find ways to improve the department satisfaction through the activities that can enhance the social support, nursing professionalism, and ego-resilience of nursing students. This will help them adjust to college life.

A Longitudinal Study on Professional Socialization, Self-esteem, and Self-efficacy in Nursing Students (간호학생의 전문직사회화, 자아존중감 및 자기효능감에 대한 종단적 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to clarify longitudinally the professional socialization (PS), self-esteem (SE1), and self-efficacy (SE2) over time in nursing students. Methods: Using a structured questionnaire, data were collected from the same nursing students in 2008, 2009, and 2010 years. Descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA test with the SAS package were used for the data analysis. Results: The differences in the PS, SE1, and SE2 over time were not significant in nursing students. However, the differences in decision making over time were significant in nursing students. Conclusion: These results suggest that SE1 and SE2 continuously affected professional socialization over time. Therefore, it is necessary to devise a continuing and long-term strategy, which strengthens SE1 and SE2 in order to improve professional socialization.

Relationships among Emotional intelligence, Ego-resilience and Communication competence in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 감성지능, 자아탄력성과 의사소통능력과의 관계)

  • Purpose. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of emotional intelligence, ego-resilience and communication competence in nursing students. Methods. Data was collected from a group of 146 nursing students by means of self reported questionnaires about emotional intelligence, ego-resilience and communication competence in nursing students from the period between February 18, 2017 to March 19, 2017. Results. There were positive correlations between emotional intelligence, ego-resilience and communication competence. Factors influencing the communication competence of nursing students were ego-resilience (${\beta}=.42$, p<.001), Academic achievement (${\beta}=.38$, p=.003)and emotional intelligence (${\beta}=.24$, p=.026). These factors explained 54.8% of the variance in the participants' communication competence (F=60.15, p<.001). Conclusions. In conclusion, strategies for increasing emotional intelligence and ego-resilience of nursing students' ego-resilience, should be developed to improve the communication competence of nursing students.

Role Expectation of School Health Teachers Recognized by Elementary Students and Nursing Students (보건교사 역할에 대한 초등학생과 간호대학생의 인식 비교)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the level of role expectation of school health teachers recognized by elementary students and nursing college students and to compare role expectations between the two groups. Methods: The participants in this study were 323 elementary school students from 2 schools and 112 nursing students from 2 universities. Data was collected by a structured self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANOVA by the SPSS 19.0 program. Results: The elementary students and nursing students recognized health service and health education as the most important role expectation for school health teachers. The role expectation of nursing students was higher than those of elementary students. The elementary students' points of view for role expectation were statistically different according to their health status. Conclusion: To improve the school health teacher's role, understanding the client's expectation is necessary. In addition to the role of health service and education, counseling for elementary students should be developed.

Self-Efficacy, Self-Concept of Professional Nursing, and Clinical Practice Satisfaction to Clinical Practice Education in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 임상실습교육에 대한 자기효능감, 전문직 자아개념 및 임상실습만족도)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify self-efficacy and self-concept of professional nursing which might influence clinical practice satisfaction in nursing students. The participants were 278 nursing students in U city. Date were collected from November 29 to December 17, 2010. The collected data was analyzed with the PASW 18.0 statistics program. Self-efficacy had significant positive correlation with self-concept of professional nursing(r=.595, p<.001) and self-concept of professional nursing had significant positive correlation with clinical practice satisfaction(r=.396, p<.001). In multiple regression analysis, self-concept of professional nursing is most influential factor explained 21% of variance of clinical practice satisfaction. The results indicate that to develop a more reasonable and effective curriculum and teaching program for enhancement of students' self-concept of professional nursing.

Nursing Students' Knowledge on Children's Pain (간호학생의 아동 통증에 대한 지식)

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate nursing students' knowledge on children's pain. Methods: The subjects were 389 nursing students in a university and a college. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires and analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 14.0 program. Results: Nursing students' knowledge on children's pain were generally low. Knowledge on analgesics was ranked the lowest. The levels of knowledge on children's pain of the students were different by gender, grade, academic achievement, the learning experience on pain, and the experience with chronic pain. Conclusion: The results of this study suggests that nursing students do not know children's pain thoroughly, and general characteristics and learning experience of the students make an effect on the knowledge. Therefore, the education programs on children's pain are needed to improve the knowledge of nursing students.

The Effects of a Communication Training Program on Communication and Interpersonal Relationships of Nursing Students (의사소통 훈련 집단프로그램이 간호대학생의 대인 의사소통과 인간관계에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The present study was to examine the effects of a communication training program on nursing students' interpersonal communication and relationships. Methods: This study was quasi-experimental research using a non-equivalent pre-post design. The subjects were 40 sophomore nursing students who were divided into an experimental group of 20 members and a control group of 20 members. The communication training program consisted of 8 sessions of small group training and each session lasted 120 minutes. A pretest, posttest and follow-up test (6 months after the program was terminated) were conducted to measure Inter-personal Communication Inventory and Relationships Scale. Data was analyzed by $X^2$-test, independent t-test, paired t-test and Friedman test with SPSS. Results: The communication training program was very effective in enhancing the nursing students' communication and interpersonal abilities. Nursing students' communication ability in the experimental group, however, decreases after 6 months while there is no change in the control group. Nursing students' interpersonal relationships in the experimental group was maintained at the follow-up test. Conclusions: This study supports that a communication training program has a positive effect on improving the nursing students' communication skill and interpersonal relationships.
