  • Purpose: Structural equation model was analysed to explore the determinants of health behaviors of university nursing students in Korea. Study subjects: Four hundreds seventy eight university nursing students were selected by random cluster sampling from five universities located in the middle area of Korea. Data collection: The data were collected by questionnaires about demographic characteristics, stressful life events, perceived social support, perceived health status and health behaviors. Results: 1. Living with(out) family did not show direct effect on health behaviors. 2. Stressful life events and social support showed indirect effect on health behaviors via perceived health status; higher score of stressful life events predicted negative health behaviors. 3. The higher score of perceived health status predicted positive health behaviors. Recommendation: To improve the health behavior of nursing student, the program for positive perceived health status is necessary, which includes the social support and stressful life event control program. Each nursing school should be encouraged to develop the program for increasing positive perceived health status. It would be more effective to develop health program separately according to the demographic or social characteristics of the students. And following studies could be suggested to identify and promote the validity and reliability of perceived health status and health behaviors measurements.

  • The purpose of this study was to propose curriculum and teaching sequence for seasonal change by exploring a learning progression. For the purpose, 4 steps of construct modeling approach (specifying construct, item design, outcome space, and measurement model) proposed by Wilson (2005) was applied. In the stage of specifying construct, 'length of shadow according to seasons', 'position of constellation according to seasons', 'seasons of the southern hemisphere and northern hemisphere', 'cause and phenomenon of seasonal change' were selected as the subconstructs of seasonal changes, and constructed a construct map showing the level of development from level 1 to level 4 for each subconstruct based on the results of the previous research. In the item design stage, we developed five assessment items consisting of 3 items in the form of C-E (choose and explain) and two items in the form of CR (constructed response), applied it to 383 elementary, middle and high school students. In the outcome space stage, the students' responses to the assessment items were categorized based on the construct map. The categories were classified into 4 levels according to student ability and scores of 1-4 were given. In the measurement model stage, we applied the partial credit model of the Rasch model and compared whether the learning pathway created from the results of students' response coincides with the construct map. Based on the results of the research, we modified the construct map and finally created hypothetical learning progression on seasonal change. Finally, we proposed an orientation of curriculum amendment and effective teaching sequence for seasonal change.

  • The local history research started from the 1960's postmodernism neted in the local history as the subject of diversity instead of National history. The local is being magnified as a new research theme among history scholar. In these circumstances, the local history research shows sign of activity and the movement that used in various ways at education has become more active. Compared to the contents business of local history, development of education contents what serviced for student is insufficient. Therefore, this research suggests development plan of local history education contents using archives which efficient tool of history education. Students can grow the ability of historical inquiry, thinking, insight through archives-assisted learning. Also, self-learning is possible instead of a lecture by teacher. This research shows a development of archival contents for local history education though literature research, abroad case analysis, focus group interview with history teachers. Concepts of the local history, local history education, education contents are examined at literature research. Local history education of the State Archives of the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Australia web site is analyzed. These state archives have been providing the web based service of archival contents for local history education for a long time. With these theoretical background, carry out a focus group interview with middle school history teachers. • An assessment instrument dealing with secondary students' views on the nature of science was developed in this study. The features in aspects of the nature of science are generally accepted as characterizing the scientific enterprise and we have focused on are: 1) the purposes of the scientific enterprise, 2) the nature of scientific enquiry, 3) the nature and status of scientific knowledge, and 4) the nature and functioning of the scientific community. The questionnaire is made of three sections; that is, "Scientific Question", "Experiment", and "Belief". The Scientific Questions probe was designed to examine the ways in which learners mark out science as a particular domain, and particularly the types of questions that they think are open to scientific investigation. The Experiment probe was designed to throw light on the ways in which learners may think about theories and their relationship to evidence in a range of contexts. A related aim concerns the sorts of activities that learners consider to be experiments, and their reasons for this. The Belief probe was designed to see whether students are able to articulate the grounds for their acceptance of a proposition and, if they are, to explore the nature of these grounds. The reliability of the instrument developed in this study was found to be 0.86.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a metastrategic activity on the development of student variable controlling abilities. Three groups of seventh graders at a middle-school in the City of Daegu participated in this study: a metastrategy activity group (ME), a problem-solving activity group (PR), and a control group (CO). The ME group was given metastrategy activity worksheets, which required students to monitor, control, and evaluate variable control strategies in a specified situation. The PR group was given problem-solving activity worksheets, which were needed to solve problems in various situations. The results were seen as follows. First, the metastrategy activity group showed better achievement (p<.05) and a longer standing effect (p<.01) than the other groups in the development of variable control ability. The problem-solving activity group was more effective than the control group (p<.05) in the development of variable controlled ability, but there was no lasting effect of the acquired ability. Second, the metastrategic activity group was more effective than the problem-solving activity group in finding fixed variables (p<.01), but not as effective in uncovering independent variables. What is not transferred to the development of the ability to find dependent variables.

  • To understand the synergy of collaboration and to apply this understanding to education, an analysis of how a team solves a problem and the sharing of their mental models is needed. This paper analyzed two things qualitatively to find out the source of synergy in a collaborative problem-solving process. First, the sharing contents in team mental model and second, the process of sharing the team mental model. Ten gifted middle school students collaborated to solve an ill-defined problem called sunshine through foliage problem. The gifted students shared the following results after the collaboration: First, scientific concept prior to common idea or the idea that all group members have before the discussions; second, unique individual ideas of group members; and third, created ideas that were not originally in the personal mental model. With created ideas, the team model becomes more than the sum of individuals. According to the results of process analysis, in the process of sharing mental model, the students proposed and shared the most important variable first. This result implied that the analysis of the order of sharing ideas is important as much as finding shared ideas. Also, the result shows that through their collaboration, the gifted students' shared mental model became more refined and expanded as compared to their individual prior mental models. It is recommended that these results can be used to measure shared mental model and develop collaborative learning models for students.
