Micro-silica Mixed Aqua-epoxy for Concrete Module Connection in Water : Part 1 - Material Development and Evaluation (해상 프리캐스트 콘크리트 부유체 모듈 가접합을 위한 마이크로 실리카 혼입 수중용 에폭시 접합 성능 검토 : Part 1 - 재료 개발 및 성능 검토)

  • Recent studies on concrete floating structure development focused on connection system of concrete modules. Precast concrete modules are designed to be attached by prestressing in the water, exposing the structure to the loads from water and making the construction difficult. Therefore, a development of bond material became a key issue in successful connection of floating concrete modules. In this study, micro-silica mixed aqua epoxy (MSAE) is developed for the task. Existing primer aqua epoxy, originally used as a bond material for the retrofit of concrete structures using fiber reinforced polymers, is evaluated to find the optimum micro-silica added mix proportion. Micro-silica of 0~4 volume % was mixed in standard mixture of aqua epoxy. Then, the material property tests were performed to study the effect of micro-silica in aqua epoxy by controlling the epoxy silane proportion by 0, ${\pm}5$, ${\pm}10%$. The optimum mix design of MSAE was derived based on the test results. The MSAE was used to connect concrete module specimens with the epoxy thickness variation of 5, 10, and 20mm. Then, 3-point loading test was performed to verify the bond capacity of MSAE. The results show that MSAE improves the bond capacity of concrete module.

An Experimental Analysis of Ultrasonic Cavitation Effect on Ondol Pipeline Management (온돌 파이프라인 관리를 위한 초음파 캐비테이션 효과에 대한 실험적 분석)

  • In the context of Korean residential heating systems, Ondol pipelines are a prevalent choice. However, the maintenance of these pipelines becomes a complex task once they are embedded within concrete structures. As time progresses, the accumulation of sludge, corrosive oxides, and microorganisms on the inner surfaces of these pipelines diminishes their heating efficiency. In extreme scenarios, this accumulation can induce corrosion and scale formation, compromising the system's integrity. Consequently, this research introduces an ultrasonic generation system tailored for the upkeep of Ondol pipelines, with the objective of empirically assessing its practicality. This investigation delineates three variants of ultrasonic generating apparatuses: those employing surface vibration, external generation, and internal generation techniques. To emulate the presence of contaminants within the pipelines, substances in powder, slurry, and liquid forms were employed. The efficacy of the cleaning process post-ultrasonic wave application was scrutinized over time, with image analysis methodologies being utilized to evaluate the outcomes. The findings indicate that ultrasonic waves, whether generated externally or internally, exert a beneficial effect on the cleanliness of the pipelines. Given the inherent characteristics of Ondol pipelines, external generation proves impractical, thereby rendering internal generation a more viable solution for pipeline maintenance. It is anticipated that future endeavors will pave the way for innovative maintenance strategies for Ondol pipelines, particularly through the advancement of internal generation technologies for pipeline applications.

Changes on the Microstructure of an Al-Cu-Si Ternary Eutectic Alloy with Different Mold Preheating Temperatures (금형 예열온도에 따른 Al-Cu-Si 3원계 공정합금의 미세조직 변화)

  • In order to understand the solidification behavior and microstructural evolution of the Al-Cu-Si ternary eutectic alloy system, changes of the microstructure of the Al-Cu-Si ternary eutectic alloy with different cooling rates were investigated. When the mold preheating temperature is 500℃, primary Si and Al2Cu dendrites are observed, with (α-Al+Al2Cu) binary eutectic and needle-shaped Si subsequently observed. In addition, even when the mold preheating temperature is 300℃, primary Si and Al2Cu dendrites can be observed, and both (α-Al+Al2Cu+Si) areas observed and areas not observed earlier appear. When the mold preheating temperature is 150℃, bimodal structures of the binary eutectic (α-Al+Al2Cu) and ternary eutectic (α-Al+Al2Cu+Si) are observed. When the preheating temperature of the mold is changed to 500℃, 300℃, and 150℃, the greatest change is in the Si phase, and upon reaching the critical cooling rate, the ternary eutectic of (α-Al+Al2Cu+Si) forms. If the growth of the Si phase is suppressed upon the formation of (α-Al+Al2Cu+Si), the growth of both Al and Cu is also suppressed by a cooperative growth mechanism. As a result of analyzing the Al-27wt%Cu-5wt%Si ternary eutectic alloy with a different alloy design simulation programs, it was confirmed that different results arose depending on the program. A computer simulation of the alloy design is a useful tool to reduce the trial and error process in alloy design, but this effort must be accompanied by a task that increases reliability and allows a comparison to microstructural results derived through actual casting.

  • The regions of Central Asia have each acquired an elevated strategic importance in the new security paradigm of post-September 1lth. Comprised of five states, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, Central Asia's newly enhanced strategic importance stems from several other factors, ranging from trans-national threats posed by Islamic extremism, drug production and trafficking, to the geopolitical threats inherent in the region's location as a crossroads between Russia, Southwest Asia and China. Although the U.S. military presence in the region began before September 11th, the region became an important platform for the projection of U.S. military power against the Taliban in neighboring Afghanistan. The analysis goes on to warn that 'with US troops already in place to varying extents in Central Asian states, it becomes particularly important to understand the faultlines, geography, and other challenges this part of the world presents'. The Kyrgyz military remains an embryonic force with a weak chain of command, the ground force built to Cold War standards, and an almost total lack of air capabilities. Training, discipline and desertion - at over 10 per cent, the highest among the Central Asian republics - continue to present major problems for the creation of combat-effective armed forces. Kyrgyzstan has a declared policy of national defence and independence without the use of non-conventional weapons. Kyrgyzstan participates in the regional security structures, such as the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) and the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) but, in security matters at least, it is dependent upon Russian support. The armed forces are poorly trained and ill-equipped to fulfil an effective counter-insurgency or counter-terrorist role. The task of rebuilding is much bigger, and so are the stakes - the integrity and sovereignty of the Kyrgyz state. Only democratization, the fight against corruption, reforms in the military and educational sectors and strategic initiatives promoting internal economic integration and national cohesion hold the key to Kyrgyzstan's lasting future

A Study on a Model for University Library in the Future (미래형 대학도서관 모형개발 연구)

  • At this point, the universities preparing the 21st century, require a great reform in various ways, especially a renovation of the function of the university library that can provide intellectual and information ability in information society is raised as an imminent task. Information technology, particularly the advanced technology in networking, have already constructed networks for university libraries using the information super-highway and it has enabled formation seekers to get the retrieved results transferred to their personal computers in a second. On the other hand, university libraries playing the most important role as an information center are still not corresponding effectively with the information age since it is tied down to the previous system, policy and tradition. The duty of university library is to distribute the accumulated, processed and stored academic information promptly and accurately to professors, researchers and students who are in need, and thereby to enhance their research capability, However, the present university libraries do not seem to be functioning smoothly due to the lack of an effective administrating system, budget, facilities, and human resources, Accordingly, our university libraries are in urgent need to be of a new and futuristic form appropriate for the 21st century. They must be able to cope with the growth of users' expectation in the future. This study examined several university libraries in the America, the structures of which have been reorganized, and also looked into the network(NACSIS) for the college and research libraries in Japan. In particular, the study focused on the following aspects : 1) changing role of university library, 2) new criteria for evaluating university libraries, 3) urgent need of a network for college and research libraries, 4) administrative support for the university libraries, and 5) case studies of the university libraries in the foreign countries. Finally, this study suggests a model for our university library in the 21st century.

  • Reliability in the course of weapons system development and operation is a key measure of the ability of a system to perform the required functions under specified conditions over a specified period of time, and the mission confidence for the assessment of mission fulfillment is an important indicator of victory or defeat in a battle. Mission reliability indicates the probability that a given task will succeed or fail in an event or environmental situation over a given period of time. The existing mission reliability was calculated after creating a confidence blow map with only physical connections based on the mission. However, as modern weapons systems evolve and advance, the related equipment structure becomes increasingly complex, making it impossible to express mission relevance when mission classification is required based on functional or physical connections. In this study, the mission reliability was calculated for a gun control system, which is part of a ship's combat system, by expressing the association between the physical and functional structures using the design structure matrix technique and the interface matrix technique. We expect the study results to be used as verification data for mission reliability.

Exploration of Socio-Cultural Factors Affecting Korean Adolescents' Motivation (한국 청소년의 학습동기에 영향을 미치는 사회문화적 요인 탐색)

  • Self-efficacy, achievement goals, task value, and attribution are some of the representative motivation constructs that explain adolescents' cognition, affect, and behavioral patterns in achievement settings. These constructs have won researchers' recognition by demonstrating explanatory and predictive utility that transcends various social and cultural milieus learners are exposed to. Korean adolescents' motivation is generally in line with this universal trend and can be described adequately with these constructs. Nonetheless, there also exist a host of indigenous factors that shape these motivation constructs to be uniquely Korean. The purpose of the present article was to explore some of the socio-cultural factors that appear to wield particularly determining effects on Korean adolescents' academic motivation. Review of the relevant literature identified interdependent self-construal, traditional morals of filial piety, familism, educational fervor, academic elitism, and the college entrance system as important cultural, social, and policy-related such factors. Also discussed in this article were the roles of these factors in creating more immediate psychological learning environments for Korean adolescents, such as parent-child relationships, teacher-student relationships, and classroom goal structures.

  • It is not an easy task for forest managers to make sound decisions on forest management and operations planning because of huge sets of spatial and temporal data and complex decision-making processes involved. However, as an efficient tool, GIS techniques enable them to enhance broad understandings on forest inventory and management conditions. In this study, we developed a GIS model for field use in forest management. In building the model, we have chosen MapInfo version 4.0 as the basic engine of the model. The model also includes an interface module to help forest managers use MapInfo functions easily. It handles MapInfo functions required to manage inventory data and analyze spatial distributions of forest stands. For testing field applicability of the model, we have build field data sets for a district of Chunchun National Forest. Then, we tested functions through quarrying stand attributes and constructing thematic maps. In this paper, the structures and functions of the model as well as the results of field applications are discussed.

  • Class hierarchies often constitute the backbone of object-oriented software. Their quality is therefore quite crucial. Building class hierarchies with good qualify is a very important and common tasks on the object oriented software development, but such hierarchies are not so easy to build. Moreover, the class hierarchy structure under construction is frequently restructured and refined until it becomes suitable for the requirement on the iterative and incremental development lifecycle. Therefore, there has been renewal of interest in all methodologies and tools to assist the object oriented developers in this task. In this paper, we define a set of quantitative metrics which provide a wav of capturing features of a rough estimation of complexity of class hierarchy structure. In addition to, we suggest a set of algorithms that transform a original class hierarchy structure into reorganized one based on the proposed metrics for class hierarchy structure. Furthermore, we also prove that each algorithm is "object-preserving". That is, we prove that the set of objects are never changed before and after applying the algorithm on a class hierarchy. The technique presented in this paper can be used as a guidelines of the construction, restructuring and refinement of class hierarchies. Moreover, the proposed set of algorithms based on metrics can be helpful for developers as an useful instrument for the object-oriented software development.velopment.

Technique for the Measurement of Crack Widths at Notched / Unnotched Regions and Local Strains (콘크리트의 노치 및 비노치 구역에서의 균열폭 및 국부 변형률 정밀 측정기법)

  • Crack widths play an important role in the serviceability limit state. When crack widths are controlled sufficiently, the reinforcement corrosion can be reduced using only existing concrete cover thickness due to low permeability in the region of finely distributed hair-cracks. Thus, the knowledge about the tensile crack opening is essential in designing more durable concrete structures. Therefore, numerous researches related to the topic have been performed. Nevertheless accurate measurement of a crack width is not a simple task due to several reasons such as unknown potential crack formation location and crack opening damaging strain gages. In order to overcome these difficulties and measure precise crack widths, a displacement measurement system was developed using digital image correlation. Accuracy calibration tests gave an average measurement error of 0.069 pixels and a standard deviation of 0.050 pixels. Direct tensile test was performed using ultra high performance concrete specimens. Crack widths at both notched and unnotched locations were measured and compared with clip-in gages at various loading steps to obtain crack opening profile. Tensile deformation characteristics of concrete were well visualized using displacement vectors and full-field displacement contour maps. The proposed technique made it possible to measure crack widths at arbitrary locations, which is difficult with conventional gages such as clip-in gages or displacement transducers.
