  • Structured abstracts have been regarded as an essential information factor to represent topics of journal articles. This study aims to provide an unconventional view to utilize structured abstracts with the analysis on sub fields of a structured abstract in depth. In this study, a structured abstract was segmented into four fields, namely, purpose, design, findings, and values/implications. Each field was compared in the performance analysis of document clustering. In result, the purpose statement of an abstract affected on the performance of journal article clustering more than any other fields. Furthermore, certain types of keywords were identified to be excluded in the document clustering to improve clustering performance, especially by Within group average clustering method. These keywords had stronger relationship to a specific abstract field such as research design than the topic of an article.

  • This paper is a preliminary study to consider the introduction of structured abstracts to Korean journals in the field of library and information science (LIS). To achieve this, we first identified examples of overseas LIS journals that have adopted structured abstracts, and analyzed the occurrence statistics of each section of structured abstracts for four journals published by Emerald Publishing that emphasize the value of research and practical/social implications sections. Considering the inherent drawback of longer abstracts, we examined the abstract policies and the abstract lengths of recently published articles of four Korean LIS journals. Additionally, we identified some cases where essential elements were missing from the Korean abstracts. Finally, a proposal for the adoption of structured abstracts for Korean LIS journals was presented, focusing on the length of abstracts and the organization of sections. It is expected that the adoption of the proposed structured abstract format will facilitate the utilization of Korean LIS research in the library and information management practice.

  • The purpose of this study is to: analyze the characteristics on ill-structured problem-solving process; examine the type of memories used in their monitoring. The data were primary collected from observation and secondary the semi-structured in-depth interviews based on analysis of observation results with two students who belong to science school and a guidance. The findings of this study revealed that the ill-structured problems possess multiple representations and the upper level's problem have several sub-problems. And multiple steps simultaneously exist in particular stage of problem-solving process that is not single sequential but complex flow and have high frequency of discussion step. Type of memories used in ill-structured problems include idiosyncratic memories which is related in personal histories such as school performance, problem-related memories, abstract rules and intuition.

  • The primary purpose of this study is to compare printed index and abstract user's behaviours with digital index and abstract user's behaviours, and to verify of structured characteristics of a printed index and abstract. The major findings are as follows: (1) When the research topic is not specified enough, users tend to rely on printed indexes and abstracts search, whereas they utilize digital form in order to do retrospective search in the stage of research when the topic is determined. (2) Printed index and abstract users are expecting small number of literatures in search, whereas digital index and abstract users are expecting large number of literatures to be found The former are more satisfied with the result of search than the latter. (3) Digital index and abstract users experience more search failure than printed Index and abstract users. When they fail to find wanted materials, both users turn to the other form of indexes and abstracts. (4) Printed index and abstract users shows significantly less knowledge on online searching than digital index and abstract users.

  • This integrative review of research on the role of toys in the pretend play of young children investigated claims about the relative effects of abstract or unrealistic compared with concrete or realistic toys. Researchers and educators acknowledge the benefits of pretend play as an expression of the child's capacity of symbolic functioning and they attend to strategies for promoting pretend play at each stage of its development, including the selection and presentation of playthings. Highly structured or realistic toys were once thought to impede pretend play because they can only be used for a single intended purpose whereas less structured toys are pliant and hold the child's interest over longer periods of time as new ideas are tried out. However, the present review suggests that realistic toys are effective for very young children who still have limited representational capacity, and that realistic toys continue to give impetus to make-believe even for kindergarten children.

  • In this paper, we propose a software design method that will track the effects of modifications in a component to the rest of the components in the design phase. The prediction of the effects due to the design modifications before coding can be a valuable aid for the complex and large software development. Within the method, the target system is represented by the structured I/O system level specification which is one of the system representation level defined by the system theory. Then it is abstracted to the I/O system level. The DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification) model is constructed based on tile I/O system level specification. Finally, the DEVS model is simulated to generate the behavior of the software by the abstract simulator in DEVS simulation environment. As an application, the graphic user interface system of a metal grating production scheduling system is presented.

Abstract Output documents of existing word processors based on style informations or presentation attributes can be structured by converting them into XML(Extensible Markup Language) documents based on hierarchically logical structures such as title, abstract, chapter and so on. If so, it can be very useful to interchange and manipulate documents under Internet environment. The conversion need the complicate process calling auto-tagging by which elements of output documents can be inferred from style informations and sequences of text etc, and which is different from various kinds of simple conversion. In this paper, we defined XTML(XML Transformation Markup Language) of DTD(Document Type Definition) form and also defined the script language as instances of its DTD for the auto-tagging. XTML and its DTD are represented in XML syntax.Especially XTML includes various functions and commands to generate tree structure named as "GROVE" and also to process, store and manipulate the GROVE in order to process efficiently XML documents.documents.

  • There are many studies about cognitive and non-cognitive characteristics of gifted children in the areas of math and science until now. Also, there is a lot of research for about cognitive and non-cognitive characteristics of gifted children. But, it lacks a lot of research on the characteristics of gifted children for information science area. So, characteristics of gifted children in the areas of information science are defined as structured information recall ability, regularization ability, reasoning ability, efficiency ability, structured ability, generalization ability, and abstract ability. And real problems for each ability are proposed. To make the evaluation questions proposed in this study on the cognitive gifted characteristics when compared with student achievement and prove that there is a correlation. The results of this study can be utilized in the evaluation of information giftedness children and can be utilized in the development of gifted education programs.

  • A rhetorical segment in traditional abstract displaying a sign of particular function is frequently referred to as a move. One of the most common moves is the Background, Aim, Method, Results, and Conclusion (BAMRC). The objective of this paper is to investigate the move patterns of research article abstracts in the field of social sciences based on BAMRC moves. Using the Scopus bibliographic database, a total of 467 abstracts from 298 research journals in the field of social sciences were analyzed. The result showed a wide range of move patterns. The implication of the result of this study suggests the existing traditional abstracts in social sciences might not be sufficiently "informative" due to missing moves and due to various move orders. To this end, automatically mapping moves in traditional abstracts to sub-headings in structured abstracts can be a more challenging task, requiring additional procedures to resolve these types of compatibility issues. Future studies can compare this study's result to other fields or disciplines within social sciences in order to find a more precise nature of abstracts in the field of social sciences.
