  • We have studied internal quality including chemical compositions, microscopic structure and nonmetallic inclusion of test materials. We have analyzed tensile strength value, hardness value, impact value etc. In analyzing internal quality, all of the test materials showed typical ferrite+pearlite structure. But nonmetallic inclusion showed oxide and sulfide inclusions in medium carbon steels, and sulfide inclusion is S-free cutting steels. In ca+ S-free cutting steels, the calcium aluminate and sulfide complex inclusion had low-melting points as deformation of sulfide and oxide inclusion is existed. It was found that tensile strength and hardness give maximum value in medium carbon steels, where as minimum in Ca + -free cutting steels. But values of elongation, reduction of area impact are reverse. Fracture surface of impact specimen is ductile in free cutting steels but brittle in medium cabon steels.

  • The hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of high strength TRIP/TWIP steels with the tensile strength of 600Mpa to 900Mpa grade was investigated using cathodically hydrogen charged specimens. TWIP steels with full austenite structure show a lower hydrogen content than do TRIP steels. The uniform distribution of strong traps throughout the matrix in the form of austenite is considered beneficial to reduce the hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility of TWIP steels. Moreover, an austenite structure with very fine deformation twins formed during straining could also improve the ductility and reduce notch sensitivity. In Ubend and deep drawing cup tests, TWIP steels show a good resistance to hydrogen embrittlement compared with TRIP steels.

  • The major effects of RSP sre 1) extension of solid solubilities, 2) formation of metastable phaeses, 3) microstructural refinement 4) segregationless. The main trust of this study was to investigate the effects of superimposing RSP on the structure and properties of HSLA steels. Powder was made by NGA (Nitrogen Gas Atomization) process, and consolidated by HIP. The high grain-coarsening resistance of NGA-HIP steels was attributed to a fine dispersion of oxide precipitates. The average grain size for the NGA-HIP steels was somewhat finer than that for the conventional HSLA steels, The impact properteis of NGA-HIP steels were improved over those of the conventional HSLA steels.

  • 2205 duplex stainless steels have been used for the construction of the marine environment, because of their excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. However, the resistance to hydrogen embrittlement (HE) may be less than that of 316L austenitic stainless steel. The reason why 316L stainless steels have better resistance to HE is associated with crystal structure (FCC, face centered cubic) and the higher stacking faults energy than 2205 duplex stainless steels. Furthermore 2205 stainless steels with or without tungsten were also examined in terms of HE. 2205 stainless steels containing tungsten is less resistible to HE. It is because dislocation tangle was formed in 2205 duplex stainless steels. Slow strain-rate tensile test (SSRT) was conducted to measure the resistance to HE under the cathodic applied potential. Hydrogen embrittlement index (HEI) was used to evaluate HE resistance through the quantitative calculation.

  • Microalloyed steels, which substituted by conventional quenched and tempered steels, have been used in a wide variety of structural and engineering application. The main driving force for preference of MA steels is a cost reduction which can be achieved by an omission of heat treatment. In this study, low carbon martensitic MA steels in 0.18C-0.30(0.60)Si-2.00(1.80)Mn-0.05S-1.5Cr-0.05(0.10)V-0.015Ti(wt%) were investigated to know the effects of cooling method on the mechanical properties and microstructures of Si, Mn, V added microalloyed steel at different reheating temperature. Microstructure of oil quenched steels which were comprised lath martensite, auto-tempered martensite and retained austenite, had more various structure than that of air cooled steel made of mainly bainite. Therefore, oil quenched steels, which had more various microstructure, had better strength-toughness balance compare to air cooled steels. In the impact test, fracture mode of oil quenched steels, which showed good mechanical properties, were dimple, but that of air cooled steels were cleavage.

  • The microstructure of medium-carbon non-heat treated steels by air-cooling shows ferritepearlite structure. Compared to the conventional Q/T steels, the strength of these steels containing V, Nb and Ti are similar to Q/T steels. However, their toughness are inferior. In this study, the mechanical properties and microstructures of low-carbon Mo bearing steels produced by direct-quenching process were investigated. Especially, the effect of Mo on the direct-quenched steels was examined. The direct-quenched steels containing Mo were found to have higher strength and toughness. Mo seemed to be effective in producing the fine structure and dense precipitates because of decreasing transformation temperature. The best results were 1211 MPa in UTS and 127.5 J in toughness in the oil quenched 0.15C+O.llV+ 0.035Nb+ 1.81Mo steel. Compared to 0.4% C microalloyed steels, this results showed that UTS increased by 45% and toughness by 2 times.

  • In the present study, the effect of SIDT (Strain Induced Dynamic Transformation) on the microstructure of medium carbon steels was investigated to develop spheroidized annealing-free steel wire rods. When $0.45\%C$ steels were hot-deformed under the conditions of heavy reduction at low temperatures, a microstructure quite different from conventional ferrite-pearlite structure was obtained. It was considered that this ferrite-cementite microstructure was obtained because very small retained austenite grains existing between fine SIDT ferrites prefer to transform to cementite and ferrite instead of pearlite during cooling. Through the present study, $0.45\%C$ steels containing ferrite-cementite (FC) structure instead of ferrite-pearlite structure was obtained in as-rolled state by introducing SIDT. The specimen containing the FC structure was much softer than that containing conventional ferrite-pearlite structure. Therefore, it is concluded that deforming medium carbon steels under the conditions of SIDT is a very powerful method to obtain soft steel wire rods which could be cold-forged without softening heat-treatment

  • According to conventional nitriding of tool steels, it was very difficult to produce a high surface hardness. This study has been conducted to investigate the influence of initial structures on the nitriding characteristics of tool steels in gas-nitrided for the improvement in surface hardness. The specimens (SACM645, STD61 steels) have been quenching and tempering at various temperature and then gas-nitrided for 30, 45 and 60hr at 500, 530 and $550^{\circ}C$ respectively in gasatmosphere of 30%$NH_3-70%N_2$ As hardness of initial structure was higher, the nitriding layer was deeper and hardness of the nitriding layer was higher. Deeper nitriding layers was due to higher diffusion rate by fine initial microstructure. Also the reason of high surface hardness was associated with formation of dispersed fine carbonitrides of nitrides.

  • The efforts which increase the strength of the auto-body structure and decrease its weight lead to develop a new concept of part production systems, such as Post-Form Strengthening by induction heat treatment. In this study, several cold and hot-rolled sheet steels were used to find out optimum induction heat treatment conditions. After induction heat treatment, strength of heat-treated sheet steels was increased significantly compared with that of as-rolled steels. From these results, auto-body structure which has more light and safe has been made by using this induction hardening method.
