  • In this study, a sensitivity analysis was carried out by using numerical analysis under the consideration that it is difficult to analyze the behavior of real piled raft foundations on different ground conditions through a real scale test. The program used for numerical analysis is FLAC 3D based on the finite difference method. Piles were modelled by using pile element that is one of the structure elements of FLAC 3D and the ground and raft were modelled by using continuum element. With a fixed pile arrangement of $3{\times}3$, the diameter, length, space of piles, and ground conditions were selected as sensitivity parameters and their mutual correlation were investigated. As a result, the bigger and longer pile diameter, length and pile space are, the bigger the bearing capacity of the piled raft becomes. When pile space exceeded a specific value, however, the piled raft foundation behaved like a shallow foundation supported by only a raft. Also it can be confirmed that the better ground conditions are, the more total bearing capacity of the piled raft foundation increases.

  • In this study, a micro gas sensor for $NO_x$ was fabricated using a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technology and sol-gel process. The membrane and micro heater of the sensor platform were fabricated by a standard MEMS and CMOS technology with minor changes. The sensing electrode and micro heater were designed to have a co-planar structure with a Pt thin film layer. The size of the gas sensor device was about $2mm{\times}2mm$. Indium oxide as a sensing material for the $NO_x$ gas was synthesized by a sol-gel process. The particle size of synthesized $In_2O_3$ was identified as about 50 nm by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The maximum gas sensitivity of indium oxide, as measured in terms of the relative resistance ($R_s=R_{gas}/R_{air}$), occurred at $300^{\circ}C$ with a value of 8.0 at 1 ppm $NO_2$ gas. The response and recovery times were within 60 seconds and 2 min, respectively. The sensing properties of the $NO_2$ gas showed good linear behavior with an increase of gas concentration. This study confirms that a MEMS-based gas sensor is a potential candidate as an automobile gas sensor with many advantages: small dimension, high sensitivity, short response time and low power consumption.

  • Soft X-ray photography was used to study some characters of seeds, such as fullness, damage by blight and harmful insects and degree of mechanical damages, degree of development of embryos and endosperms, size and position of cotylendons, existence and position of twin seed. Thirty nine species of woody plants (31 angiosperms and 8 gymnosperms)and four species of herbs were examined in this study. The results showed that through the mechanism of the selective sensitivity of seed structure of soft X-ray, seed characters mentioned above could be recognized regardless of size of seeds and thickness of seed coat. We concluded that it is possible to use soft X-ray photography reliably to find out the various characters of seeds.

  • Purpose : Bony strength is dependent on bone mass and bony structure. So this study was designed to investigate the relationship between the bone mass and bony trabecular characteristics. Subjects and Methods : Study subjects were 51 females (average age 68.6 years) and 20 males (average age 66.4 years). Bone mineral density (BMD, $grams/cm^2$) of proximal femur was measured by a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Regions of interest (ROIs) were selected from the digitized radiographs of proximal femur. A customized computer program processed morphologic operations (MO) of ROIs. 44 skeletal variables of MO were calculated from ROIs on the Ward's triangle and greater trochanter of femur. WHO BMD classes were predicted by MO variables of the same ROI. Classification and Regression Tree analysis was used for calculating weighted kappa values, sensitivity and specificity of MO. Results : The discriminating factors of morphologic operation were branch point, branch point [per cm sq]. Age also played important role in distinguishing osteoporotic classes. The sensitivity of MO at Ward's triangle and Greater Trochanter was 91.8%, 65.6%, respectively. The specificity of MO was 100% at Ward's triangle and Greater Trochanter. Conclusion : Bony trabecular characteristics obtained using radiological bone morphometric analysis seem to be related to bone mass.

  • The characteristic response of a structure to blast load may be divided into two distinctive phases, namely the direct blast response during which the shock wave effect and localized damage take place, and the post-blast phase whereby progressive collapse may occur. A reliable post-blast analysis depends on a sound understanding of the direct blast effect. Because of the complex loading environment and the stress wave effects, the analysis on the direct effect often necessitates a high fidelity numerical model with coupled fluid (air) and solid subdomains. In such a modelling framework, an appropriate representation of the blast load and the high nonlinearity of the material response is a key to a reliable outcome. This paper presents a series of calibration study on these two important modelling considerations in a coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian framework using a hydrocode. The calibration of the simulated blast load is carried out for both free air and internal explosions. The simulation of the extreme dynamic response of concrete components is achieved using an advanced concrete damage model in conjunction with an element erosion scheme. Validation simulations are conducted for two representative scenarios; one involves a concrete slab under internal blast, and the other with a RC column under air blast, with a particular focus on the simulation sensitivity to the mesh size and the erosion criterion.

  • In this study, structural optimum design was applied to the girder of magnet over head crane. The optimization was carried out using ANSYS Code for the deadweight of girder, especially focused on the thickness of its upper, lower, side and reinforced plates. The weight could be reduced up to around 15% with constraints of its deformation, stress, natural frequency and buckling strength. The structural safety was also verified by the buckling analysis of its panel structure. It might be thought to be very useful to design the conventional structures for the weight save through the structural optimization. Also this paper grasped the sensitivity influenced the design variables upon the objective function and the state variables.

  • Pavement distress and traffic accidents are caused by pot-hole. In addition, direct and indirect damages of road users are increasing, such as loss of life due to personal injury and damage to vehicles. Generally, the asphalt concrete pavements are continuously aging from the production process to the terminal performance period. Aging causes stripping due to cracks and moisture penetration and weakening the pavement structure to induce pot-hole. In this study, adhesion performance and moisture sensitivity were evaluated according to aging degree in order to investigate the effect of aging on asphalt pavement. As a result of the study, the viscosity of the asphalt binder was increased with aging and the bond strength of the aged was increased 2~3 times than that of the unaged. The results of accelerated aging test showed an increases in indirect tensile strength and the increase in the TSR (Tensile Strength Ratio) by 4.2~8.9 %. As a result, it is noted that the anti-stripping and adhesion performances of the aged asphalt concrete are improved compared to the unaged one under the aging conditions of asphalt binder coated on aggregates.

  • This paper presents a study on the linear compensation of nonlinear hysteric actuators using the highly magnetostrictive film pattern as a strain sensor. Elements had a hybrid structure, in which thin soft glass substrate with the highly magnetostrictive amorphous FeCoSiB film was bonded on the PZT piezoelectric substrate. The magnetostrictive film as a strain sensor detects the deflection of an actuator, and a voltage signal from the strain sensor related to the deflection of an actuator is used for the linear control of an actuator.

  • Resizing techniques have been recognized as practical methods for drift design of high-rise building since sensitivity analysis and iterative structural analysis are not required in implementation. In the techniques, the amount of material of a memberin a building for resizing is determined in terms of cross-sectional areas and sectional inertia moments as design variables. In this study, five drift design methods are developed by considering design variable linking strategy and fomulating resizing algorithm in terms of material properties of shear walls as a design variable. The developed methods are applied to the drift design of 20-story frame-RC shear wall structure, and then evaluated in the view points of practicality and efficiency.

  • The structural analysis considering the soil-structure interaction is very important in the design process of underground structures located on the site with various soil conditions. In practice, simplified modelling techniques to obtain the approximate solution are used in accordance with the specifications. However, their details are insufficient for practical engineers to obtain the stable solutions and the analysis results of each engineer occasionally my be different in spite of the same problem. In this study, the sensitivity of structural behaviour on the underground structures is analyzed according to the structural modelling techniques of existing specifications. It is performed to obtain the fundamental informations to establish the guide to obtain the stable solutions in practical analysis of the underground structures such as subway structures.
