Benefiting from the massive monitoring data collected by the Structural health monitoring (SHM) system, scholars can grasp the complex environmental effects and structural state during structure operation. However, the monitoring data is often missing due to sensor faults and other reasons. It is necessary to study the recovery method of missing monitoring data. Taking the structural temperature monitoring data of Nanjing Dashengguan Yangtze River Bridge as an example, the long short-term memory (LSTM) network-based recovery method for missing structural temperature data is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the prediction results of temperature data using LSTM network, support vector machine (SVM), and wavelet neural network (WNN) are compared to verify the accuracy advantage of LSTM network in predicting time series data (such as structural temperature). Secondly, the application of LSTM network in the recovery of missing structural temperature data is discussed in detail. The results show that: the LSTM network can effectively recover the missing structural temperature data; incorporating more intact sensor data as input will further improve the recovery effect of missing data; selecting the sensor data which has a higher correlation coefficient with the data we want to recover as the input can achieve higher accuracy.
A long-term structural health monitoring (SHM) system comprising over 700 sensors of sixteen types has been implemented on the Guangzhou Television and Sightseeing Tower (GTST) of 610 m high for real-time monitoring of the structure at both construction and service stages. As part of this sophisticated SHM system, 48 temperature sensors have been deployed at 12 cross-sections of the reinforced concrete inner structure of the GTST to provide on-line monitoring via a wireless data transmission system. In this paper, the differential temperature profiles in the reinforced concrete inner structure of the GTST, which are mainly caused by solar radiation, are recognized from the monitoring data with the purpose of understanding the temperature-induced structural internal forces and deformations. After a careful examination of the pre-classified temperature measurement data obtained under sunny days and non-sunny days, common characteristic of the daily temperature variation is observed from the data acquired in sunny days. Making use of 60-day temperature measurement data obtained in sunny days, statistical patterns of the daily rising temperature and daily descending temperature are synthesized, and temperature distribution models of the reinforced concrete inner structure of the GTST are formulated using linear regression analysis. The developed monitoring-based temperature distribution models will serve as a reliable input for numerical prediction of the temperature-induced deformations and provide a robust basis to facilitate the design and construction of similar structures in consideration of thermal effects.
Development of supersonic flying vehicle is one of the most latest issue in modern military technology. Specifically, structural integrity of supersonic flying vehicle can be verified by high temperature structural test. High temperature structural test is required to consider thermal load caused by aerodynamic heating while applying structural load simultaneously. Tubular quartz lamps are generally used to generate thermal load by emitting infrared radiation. In this study, modified heat flux model of tubular quartz lamp is proposed based on existing model. Parameters of the proposed model are optimized upon measured heat flux in three dimensions. Finally, thermal load of plate specimen is designed by the heat flux model. In conclusion, it is possible to predict heat flux applied on plate specimen and desired thermal load of high temperature structural test can be obtained.
The main purpose of this paper is to establish the high temperature structural integrity evaluating procedures for the next generation reactors, which are to be operated at over 500$^{\circ}C$ and for 60 years. To do this, comparison studies of the high temperature structural design codes and assessment procedures such as the ASME-NH (USA), RCC-MR (France), DDS (Japan), and R5 (UK) are carried out in view of the accumulated inelastic strain and the creep-fatigue damage evaluations. Also the application procedures of the ASME-NH rules with the actual thermal and structural analysis results are described in detail. To overcome the complexity and the engineering costs arising from a real application of the ASME-NH rules by hand, all the procedures established in this study such as the time-dependent primary stress limits, total accumulated creep ratcheting strain limits, and the creep-fatigue damage limits are computerized and implemented into the SIE ASME-NH program. Using this program, the selected high temperature structures subjected to two cycle types are evaluated and the parametric studies for the effects of the time step size, primary load, number of cycles, normal temperature for the creep damage evaluations and the effects of the load history on the creep ratcheting strain calculations are investigated.
Damage detection based on a reference set of measured data usually has the problem of different environmental temperature in the two sets of measurements, and the effect of temperature difference is usually ignored in the subsequent model updating. This paper attempts to identify the structural damage including the temperature difference with artificial measurement noise. Both local damages and the temperature difference are identified in a gradient-based model updating method based on dynamic response sensitivity. The sensitivities of dynamic response with respect to the system parameters and temperature difference are calculated by direct integration method. The measured dynamic responses of the structure from two different states are used directly to identify the structural local damages and the temperature difference. A single degree-of-freedom mass-spring system and a planar truss structure are studied to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

We examined the temperature-dependent structural and magnetic properties of HgI2 in the temperature range of 300~400 K. HgI2 is a diamagnetic material and can be used for X-ray or γ-ray detectors. DCmagnetization measurements on HgI2 showed that there is a small but distinguishable change in its diamagnetic properties near 375 K. The magnetic property change is not expected because Hg and I are known as nonmagnetic elements. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements revealed a structural transition in the temperature of 350~400 K. Temperature-dependent x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) demonstrated that the chemical valence states of both Hg and I did not changed in the temperature range of 300~400 K. However, XAFS revealed that the bond-length disorder was slightly increased in the temperature range, particularly, near Hg atoms. The structural changes of HgI2 are likely related to its diamagnetic property change. We will discuss the relation between the diamagnetic properties and local structural properties of HgI2 in detail.
Ti2O3 is known as a typical Mott insulator with a transition temperature of near $200^{\circ}C$. Unlike VO2, Ti2O3 does not have a structural phase transition near the metal-insulator-transition (MIT) temperature. We investigated the temperature-dependent thermal vibration change using temperature-dependent x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) at Ti K-edge in the temperature range of 300~600 K. Ti2O3 powder and films were synthesized using thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at $800{\sim}900^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction measurements show a single phased Ti2O3 at room temperature. XAFS confirmed no structural phase transition in the temperature of 300~600 K. A small but distinguishable structural disorder change was observed near the transition temperature. We will discuss the MIT behavior with the change of structural disorder.
A brief review of previous studies on the behaviour of concrete at extremely low temperature is presented in this paper. In addition, to describe temperature dependent behaviour of concrete, simple piecewise linear stress-strain relation is introduced. The proposed curve shows good agreement with experimental stress-strain curves at various temperature conditions. Moreover, numerical analyses for two PC beams are conducted to verify the influence of extremely low temperature to the structural behaviour.
A PHE (Process Heat Exchanger) is a key component required to transfer heat energy of $950^{\circ}C$ generated in a VHTR (Very High Temperature Reactor) to the chemical reaction that yields a large quantity of hydrogen. A small-scale PHE prototype made of Hastelloy-X is being tested in a small-scale gas loop at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. In order to properly evaluate the high-temperature structural integrity of the small-scale PHE prototype, it is very important to impose a proper constraint condition on its structural analysis model. For this effort, we tried to impose several constraint conditions on the structural analysis model and consequently fixed a proper and effective displacement constraints.
PHE(Process Heat Exchanger) is a key component required to transfer heat energy of $950^{\circ}C$ generated in a VHTR(Very High Temperature Reactor) to the chemical reaction that yields a large quantity of hydrogen. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute established the gas loop for the performance test of components, which are used in the VHTR, and they manufactured a PHE prototype to be tested in the loop. In this study, as part of the high-temperature structural-integrity evaluation of the PHE prototype, which is scheduled to be tested in the gas loop, we carried out high-temperature structural-analysis modeling, thermal analysis, and thermal expansion analysis of the PHE prototype. The results obtained in this study will be used to design the performance test setup for the PHE prototype.
