  • The aim of the present paper is to show the application of optimization strategies for the cost of beams in reinforced concrete buildings and to propose pre-sizing parameters. In order for these goals to be met, an optimization software program was developed. The program combines the analysis of structures by the grid model, reinforced concrete sizing, and the simulated annealing optimization heuristic. Sizing is compliant with the NBR 6118 (2007) Brazilian standard, according to which flexural, shearing, torsion, and web reinforcements and serviceability limit states (deflection and crack width limitation) are checked. Besides the dimensions of the situations mentioned above, the influence the cost of each material (steel, concrete and formwork) has on the overall cost of structures was also determined.

  • This paper surveys and complements contributions by the National Institute of Standards and Technology to techniques ensuring that the wind tunnel procedure for the design of high-rise structures is based on sound methods and allows unambiguous inter-laboratory comparisons. Developments that enabled substantial advances in these techniques include: Instrumentation for simultaneously measuring pressures at multiple taps; time-domain analysis methods for estimating directional dynamic effects; creation of large simulated extreme directional wind speed data sets; non-parametric methods for estimating mean recurrence intervals (MRIs) of Demand-to-Capacity Indexes (DCIs); and member sizing based on peak DCIs with specified MRIs. To implement these advances changes are needed in the traditional division of tasks between wind and structural engineers. Wind engineers should provide large sets of directional wind speeds, pressure coefficient time series, and estimates of uncertainties in wind speeds and pressure coefficients. Structural engineers should perform the dynamic analyses, estimates of MRIs of wind effects, sensitivity studies, and iterative sizing of structural members. The procedure is transparent, eliminates guesswork inherent in frequency domain methods and due to the lack of pressure measurements, and enables structural engineers to be in full control of the structural design for wind.

  • Handling constantly evolving configurations of aircraft can be inefficient and frustrating to design engineers, especially true in the early design phase when many design parameters are changeable throughout trade-off studies. In this paper, a physics-based design framework using parametric modeling is introduced, which is designated as DIAMOND/AIRCRAFT and developed for structural design of transport aircraft in the conceptual and preliminary design phase. DIAMOND/AIRCRAFT can relieve the burden of labor-intensive and time-consuming configuration changes with powerful parametric modeling techniques that can manipulate ever-changing geometric parameters for external layout of design alternatives. Furthermore, the design framework is capable of generating FE model in an automated fashion based on the internal structural layout, basically a set of design parameters describing the structural members in terms of their physical properties such as location, spacing and quantities. The design framework performs structural sizing using the FE model including both primary and secondary structural levels. This physics-based approach improves the accuracy of weight estimation significantly as compared with empirical methods. In this study, combining a physics-based model with parameter modeling techniques delivers a high-fidelity design framework, remarkably expediting otherwise slow and tedious design process of the early design phase.

  • The main objective of this research is to present the procedures of combining topology, shape & sizing optimization for truss structure by employing strain energy as objective function under the constraints of volume fractions which yield more general solution than that of total weight approach. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used as searching engine for the convergence solution. A number of algorithms from previous research are used for evaluating the feasibility and stability of candidate to accelerate convergence and reduce the computational effort. It is followed by solving problem for topology & shape optimization and topology, shape & sizing optimization of truss structure to illustrate the feasibility of applying the objective function of strain energy throughout optimization stages.

  • This study is to develop design sensitivity analysis method based on continuum theory for the actual buckling load of vehicle passenger compartment with respect to sizing design variables. For nonlinear structural analysis, both geometric and material nonlinear effects are considered. The total Lagrangian formulation for incremental equilibrium analysis and one-point linear eigenvalue problem for buckling analysis are utilized. Numerical methods are presented to evaluate design sensitivity expressions, using structural analysis results from FEM code. Optical design of vehicle passenger compartment with buckling constraint solved using Gradient projection method.

  • This paper presents a method and procedure for stress analysis and sizing in development of structures of a large composite wind turbine blade. Structural requirement of IEC standard was reviewed to set up appropriate analysis method and procedure. Several structural layouts were examined in a viewpoint of a large scale wind turbine blade. For the critical load cases, stress analysis were performed using finite element method. Stacking sequence and thickness of a laminate for each part and location were determined considering stress levels and producibility. Nonlinear geometric analysis was performed to check stability problem due to local buckling of a skin structures.

  • Very High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor (VHTR) has been selected as a high energy heat source for nuclear hydrogen generation. The VHTR can produce hydrogen from heat and water by using a thermo-chemical process or from heat, water, and natural gas by steam reformer technology. A co-axial double-tube primary hot gas duct (HGD) is a key component connecting the reactor pressure vessel and the intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) for the VHTR. In this study, a preliminary design analysis for the primary HGD of the nuclear hydrogen system was carried out. These preliminary design activities include a determination of the size, a strength evaluation and an appropriate material selection. The determination of the size was undertaken based on various engineering concepts, such as a constant flow velocity model, a constant flow rate model, a constant hydraulic head model, and finally a heat balanced model.
