Analysis of Compressive Fracture Behavior of Filled FRP Composite Box Module (충전형 FRP 합성박스 모듈의 압축파괴 거동 분석)

  • This study is a basic experimental research to apply FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) box members to slabs and girders among various architectural structures, which receive bending stress. We prepared prefabricated FRP member and connected it to an FRP box member as a large cross section before we conducted an experiment in diverse conditions to analyze characteristics of compressive fracture behavior. In this study, we carried out a compressive fracture behavior test according to fillers on the upper part of the FRP box member, loading methods, and connective types and thereby performed a finite element analysis. The comparison of analysis results with test results revealed that rigidity was found to be slightly low, while stress was concentrated on the fracture point of the sample.

  • The safety level of a structural system designed per code specifications can not be inferred directly from the reliability of members due to the load redistribution and nonlinear inelastic structural behavior. Comparison of the system and member reliability, which is scarce in the literature, is likely to indicate any possible inconsistency of design codes in providing safe and economical designs. Such a comparative study is presented in this study for moment resisting two-dimensional steel frames designed per AISC LRFD Specifications. The member reliability is evaluated using the resistance of the beam-column element and the elastic load effects that indirectly accounts for the second-order effects. The system reliability analysis is evaluated based on the collapse load factor obtained from a second-order inelastic analysis. Comparison of the system and member reliability is presented for several steel frames. Results suggest that the failure probability of the system is about one order of magnitude lower than that of the most critically loaded structural member, and that the difference between the system and member reliability depends on the structural configuration, degree of redundancy, and dead to live load ratio. Results also suggest that the system reliability is less sensitive to initial imperfections of the structure than the member reliability. Therefore, the system aspect should be incorporated in future design codes in order to achieve more reliability consistent designs.

  • A analysis of crack behavior in RC member was performed by nonlinear finite element method. Two crack models were used in F.E.M.(finite element method): one was FCM (the fixed crack model) and the other was RCM (the rotated crack model). Based on parametric study, the ratio of shear steel, strength of concrete, and a/d(shear span/effective depth) were compared with test results of references. According to the test results, when the member behavior was affected by the shear or diagonal tension, RCM was reasonable. However, when the behavior was affected by the flexibility, FCM was more appropriate. In addition, each crack model behavior for the change of shear steel ratio, the increase of strain energy was constant in FCM, but it was different in RCM because of diagonal crack distribution and crack width. Since the strength of concrete is affected not only by shear but also by flexural strength, each crack model behavior yields similar results.

Connection Behavior of FRP Box Member of Connection Method (연결방법에 따른 FRP 박스 부재의 연결거동 특성)

  • This is a basic experimental study to apply FRP modular box member to a variety of construction structures exposed to flexural strength, such as a slab and a girder. Tests were conducted under various conditions in order to analyze jointing performance features of the developed FRP modular box member as a large section. For the methods of jointing FRP modular box member, chemical connection, mechanical connection, and a combination of both were used to test both vertical and horizontal jointing. As a result of the test, using urethane+two bolts+sheets was the most efficient method of connecting FRP modular box member, and confirmed the efficient behavior by a finite element analysis.

Analytical Study on Structural Behavior of Surface Damaged Concrete Member by Calcium Leaching Degradation (칼슘 용출 열화에 의해 표면이 손상된 콘크리트 부재의 구조적 거동에 관한 해석적 연구)

  • Durability is one of the most important and attractive subjects in concrete research field because not only durability of concrete is reduced by various degradation factors but also its reduction adversely influences the structural performance and service life of concrete structure. For this reason, a considerable amount of papers associated with concrete durability have been published and those researches were mainly focused on the changes of intrinsic properties of concrete due to chemicophysical degradations. However, the relationship between durability of concrete and structural behavior of concrete member has not been well established yet. In this study, calcium leaching degradation, a cause of concrete strength reduction, was dealt with. The experiments of compressive and flexural behavior of degraded concrete member were performed to evaluate the characteristics of structural behavior according to degradation level. Finally, the results from the experiments were compared with those obtained from nonlinear FEM analysis. The results from this study clearly showed that leaching degradation leads to decrease in compressive strength and compressive behavior evolves from brittle to ductile failure pattern during the degradation process. Load capacity and flexible rigidity of the degraded RC member decreased when the degradation level increased, in compressive zone. Additionally, it was found that the values from nonlinear FEM analysis, CDP model in ABAQUS, coincided well with the experimental results.

  • Full scale structural test of 765kv electric transmission tower was performed to measure the stresses and displacement of towers under the design loadings, and the results were compared with analytical results based on three dimensional frame analysis. Also, the actual ultimate strength of the tower was measured through destructive test. Especially, to predict the behavior and failure of the connection of tubular member, finite element analysis was performed and compression test for the segments of tubular member were carried out. Valuable information for the overall and local behavior of the tower was obtained and reliability of current analytical method was confirmed.

  • In this study, one type of circular shaped composite tube was used, combined with reinforcing foam and without foam. Furthermore, CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) circular member manufactured from CFRP prepreg sheet for lightweight design. CFRP is an anisotropic material which is the most widely adapted lightweight structural member. The crashworthy behavior of circular composite material tubes subjected to static axial compression under same conditions is reported in this paper. The collapse mode during the failure process were observed and analyzed. The behavior of polymeric foams to the tubes crashworthiness were also investigated.

Effects of local structural damage in a steel truss bridge on internal dynamic coupling and modal damping

  • Structural health monitoring of steel truss bridge based on changes in modal properties was investigated in this study. Vibration measurements with five sensors were conducted at an existing Warren truss bridge with partial fractures in diagonal members before and after an emergency repair work. Modal properties identified by the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm showed evidences of increases in modal damping due to the damage in diagonal member. In order to understand the dynamic behavior of the bridge and possible mechanism of those increases in modal damping, theoretical modal analysis was conducted with three dimensional frame models. It was found that vibrations of the main truss could be coupled internally with local vibrations of diagonal members and the degree of coupling could change with structural changes in diagonal members. Additional vibration measurements with fifteen sensors were then conducted so as to understand the consistency of those theoretical findings with the actual dynamic behavior. Modal properties experimentally identified showed that the damping change caused by the damage in diagonal member described above could have occurred in a diagonal-coupled mode. The results in this study imply that damages in diagonal members could be detected from changes in modal damping of diagonal-coupled modes.

  • The structural methodology in designing a transmission tower have been performed to assume a simple truss behavior. But there're quite differences between a simple truss behavior and a real one. A suitable explanation for a structural stability can be expressed as a semi-rigid connection instead of the assumed hinged connection. This study proposes an alternative structural analysis modelling strategy for the transmission tower design. Proposed element models are truss element model, beam element model, and combined beam-truss element model. The static finite element analysis shows that there's a moment distribution between a mainpost member and the other bracing member.

  • This paper was developed to computer program, which is about to analyize nonlinear behavior of structural member and frame including to geometric and material nonlineality, and formulated to the relationship of stress-strain of steel. In order to examplity the efficiency of this program, the numerical analysis was done for H section steel beam and square steel tube column subjected to monotonic load, and braced steel frame subjected to repeated horizontal forces. The obtained results by this program were in accordance with existing experimental and analytical results respectively.
