This paper considers a Bayesian approach to modeling a flexible regression function under structural measurement error model. The regression function is modeled based on semiparametric regression with penalized splines. Model fitting and parameter estimation are carried out in a hierarchical Bayesian framework using Markov chain Monte Carlo methodology. Their performances are compared with those of the estimators under structural measurement error model without a semiparametric component.

In healthcare and medical research, many important variables have a measurement error such as body mass index and laboratory data. It is also not easy to collect samples of large size because of high cost and long time required to collect the target patient satisfied with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Beside, the demand for solving a complex scientific problem has highly increased so that a semiparametric regression approach could be of substantial value solving this problem. To address the issues of measurement error, small domain and a scientific complexity, we conduct a multivariable Bayesian smoothing under structural measurement error covariate in this article. Specifically we enhance our previous model by incorporating other useful auxiliary covariates free of measurement error. For the regression spline, we use a radial basis functions with fixed knots for the measurement error covariate. We organize a fully Bayesian approach to fit the model and estimate parameters using Markov chain Monte Carlo. Simulation results represent that the method performs well. We illustrate the results using a national survey data for application.
There has been a sustained interest towards the non-contact structural displacement measurement by means of videogrammetric technique. On the way forward, one of the major concerns is the spurious image drift induced by temperature variation. This study therefore carries out an investigation into the temperature effect of videogrammetric technique, focusing on the exploration of the mechanism behind the temperature effect and the elimination of the temperature-caused measurement error. 2D videogrammetric measurement tests under monotonic or cyclic temperature variation are first performed. Features of measurement error and the casual relationship between temperature variation and measurement error are then studied. The variation of the temperature of digital camera is identified as the main cause of measurement error. An excellent linear relationship between them is revealed. After that, camera parameters are extracted from the mapping between world coordinates and pixels coordinates of the calibration targets. The coordinates of principle point and focal lengths show variations well correlated with temperature variation. The measurement error is thought to be an outcome mainly attributed to the variation of the coordinates of principle point. An approach for eliminating temperature-caused measurement error is finally proposed. Correlation models between camera parameters and temperature are formulated. Thereby, camera parameters under different temperature conditions can be predicted and the camera projective matrix can be updated accordingly. By reconstructing the world coordinates with the updated camera projective matrix, the temperature-caused measurement error is eliminated. A satisfactory performance has been achieved by the proposed approach in eliminating the temperature-caused measurement error.

We study a semiparametric Bayesian approach to small area estimation under a nested error linear regression model with area level covariate subject to measurement error. Consideration is given to radial basis functions for the regression spline and knots on a grid of equally spaced sample quantiles of covariate with measurement errors in the nested error linear regression model setup. We conduct a hierarchical Bayesian structural measurement error model for small areas and prove the propriety of the joint posterior based on a given hierarchical Bayesian framework since some priors are defined non-informative improper priors that uses Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods to fit it. Our methodology is illustrated using numerical examples to compare possible models based on model adequacy criteria; in addition, analysis is conducted based on real data.

This paper describes the antenna alignment method of the tracking antenna system for LEO satellite. The purpose of the antenna alignment is to reduce the angular error due to the structural alignment and the monopulse null point alignment error. The angular error of 3 axis tracking system is the key performance parameter that should be minimized to accurately track satellite movement. The angular error is analyzed via a simulation and boresight measurement. The simulation is done with formulas to be derived from vector concept for 3-axis movement. The formulas of the structural alignment are verified by comparing the formula result with the field measurement. Also, the angular error due to monopulse null shift is obtained via boresight measurement. Based on the analyzed and measured results, the antenna alignment was performed and was verified via tracking test of operating LEO satellite.
In order to control vibration in structures, it is desirable to be able to identify dominant paths of vibration transmission from sources through the structure to some points of interest. Structural intensity vector(power flow per width of cross section) using cross spectra is able to measure the vibration power flow at a point in a structure. This paper describes the structural intensity measurement of 2-dimensional structure. Structural intensity of 2-dimensional structure can be obtained from eight point cross spectral measurement per axis, or two point measurement per axis on the assumption of far field. Approximate formulation of the relation between bending waves in structures and structural intensity makes it possible to separate the wave components by which one can get a state of the vibration field. Experimental results are obtained on an infinite plate at the near and far field in flexural vibration. The measurement error of two point measurement is rather bigger than eight point measurement on account of the assumption that Poisson's ratio is 1. The structural intensity vectors on the plate are checked the ability to identify the path of vibration power flow in random excitation and 200Hz sine excitation, the result of two point measurememt is almost the same as the result of eight point measurement in 200Hz sine excitation.
In this study, a process is proposed to calculate analytical correction values for the vertical shortening of all columns on all floors in a high-rise building that minimizes the error between the structural analysis predictions and values measured during construction. The weight ratio and the most probable value were accordingly considered based on the properties of the shortening value analyzed at several points in each construction stage and the distance between these measured points and unmeasured points at which the shortening was predicted. The effective range and shortening value normalization were considered using the column grouping concept. These tools were applied to calculate the error ratio between the predicted and measured values on a floor where a measured point exists, and then determine the estimated error ratio and estimated error value for the unmeasured point using this error ratio. At points on a floor where no measured point exists, the estimated error ratio and the estimated error value were calculated by applying the most probable value considering the weight ratio for the nearest floor where measured points exist. In this manner, the error values and estimated error values can be determined at all points in a structure. Then, the analytical correction value, defined as this error or estimated error value, was applied by adding it to the predicted value. Finally, the adequacy of the proposed correction method was verified against measurements by applying the analytical corrections to all unmeasured points based on the points where the measurement exists.

This study proposes a multi-scale template matching technique with image pyramids (TMI) to measure structural dynamic displacement using a vision sensor under atmospheric turbulence conditions and evaluates its displacement measurement performance. To evaluate displacement measurement performance according to distance, the three-story shear structure was designed, and an FHD camera was prepared to measure structural response. The initial measurement distance was set at 10m, and increased with an increment of 10m up to 40m. The atmospheric disturbance was generated using a heating plate under indoor illuminance condition, and the image was distorted by the optical turbulence. Through preliminary experiments, the feasibility of displacement measurement of the feature point-based displacement measurement method and the proposed method during atmospheric disturbances were compared and verified, and the verification results showed a low measurement error rate of the proposed method. As a result of evaluating displacement measurement performance in an atmospheric disturbance environment, there was no significant difference in displacement measurement performance for TMI using an artificial target depending on the presence or absence of atmospheric disturbance. However, when natural targets were used, RMSE increased significantly at shooting distances of 20 m or more, showing the operating limitations of the proposed technique. This indicates that the resolution of the natural target decreases as the shooting distance increases, and image distortion due to atmospheric disturbance causes errors in template image estimation, resulting in a high displacement measurement error.

A catchment modelling system is the summation of the numerous hydrologic, hydraulic and other process models necessary to simulate the response of a catchment to a storm event. Differences between the recorded catchment response and that predicted by a catchment modelling system can arise from structural errors within the catchment modelling system, evaluation errors in the control parameters, or measurement errors in the recorded data being used to assess the reliability of the evaluation of the control parameters. Presented herein is an investigation of the potential measurement errors within the recorded information, which was considered to occur from instrument error in the ultra sonic flow monitor. This investigation was undertaken using three available rating curves at the Musgrave Avenue Stormwater System in Centennial Park, Sydney, developed by Abustan (1997), Water Board (1994), and using Manning's equation.
The effect of structural uncertainties or measurement errors on damage detection results makes the robustness become one of the most important features during identification. Due to the wide use of vibration signatures on damage detection, the development of vibration-based techniques has attracted a great interest. In this work, a review on vibration-based robust detection techniques is presented, in which the robustness is considerably improved through modeling error compensation, environmental variation reduction, denoising, or proper sensing system design. It is hoped that this study can give help on structural health monitoring or damage mitigation control.
