  • Cantilever retaining wall movements generally depend on the intensity and duration of ground motion, the response of the soil underlying the wall, the response of the backfill, the structural rigidity, and soil-structure interaction (SSI). This paper investigates the effect of material properties on seismic response of backfill-cantilever retaining wall-soil/foundation interaction system considering SSI. The material properties varied include the modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio, and mass density of the wall material. A series of nonlinear time history analyses with variation of material properties of the cantilever retaining wall are carried out by using the suggested finite element model (FEM). The backfill and foundation soil are modelled as an elastoplastic medium obeying the Drucker-Prager yield criterion, and the backfill-wall interface behavior is taken into consideration by using interface elements between the wall and soil to allow for de-bonding. The viscous boundary model is used in three dimensions to consider radiational effect of the seismic waves through the soil medium. In the seismic analyses, North-South component of the ground motion recorded during August 17, 1999 Kocaeli Earthquake in Yarimca station is used. Dynamic equations of motions are solved by using Newmark's direct step-by-step integration method. The response quantities incorporate the lateral displacements of the wall relative to the moving base and the stresses in the wall in all directions. The results show that while the modulus of elasticity has a considerable effect on seismic behavior of cantilever retaining wall, the Poisson's ratio and mass density of the wall material have negligible effects on seismic response.

  • Lightning protective design of an aircraft fuel system is closely related to the safety of the flight. Recently, composite material in building an aircraft becomes more important because it can reduce the weight of the aircraft. The composite materials decrease the protection against the effect of lightning. Lightning protective design of metal material aircraft has been researched for a long time and the design technique has been announced widely. However, research on the lightning protective design using composite material aircraft is very limited. In this study, lightning protective design for fuel tank structural component, access cover, fuel filler cap and drain valve in carbon fiber composite material aircraft have been presented. To show the compliance with FAA airworthiness standard regarding the presented protection designs, three steps, including lightning strike analysis, lightning environment analysis and certification test, were conducted in accordance with FAA AC 20-53.

  • Recently, the composite material becomes more popular and its usage is kept expanding from aerospace to civil structures such as bridge decks and irrigation and drainage pipes. The major cause for the popularity can be found in its high strength, light, and excellent anticorrosive properties. Nevertheless the methods to accurately predict and analyze its structural behavior are extremely limited. This has been the major reason circumventing more prevalent use of the composite materials in civil structures. This study is a pre-study to develop the analyzing models for accurate prediction of the composite material structures. Thus, various tests were performed for GFRP pipes to estimate material characteristics of GFRP in this study. And stress-strain relation of GFRP was suggested as a bilinear relation.

  • Abalone shell is composed of 95 wt% $CaCO_3$ platelets and 5 wt% of a protein-rich organic matrix which acts as an adhesive layer, connecting aragonite tablets, thus maintaining the structural integrity of the composite. By mimicking abalone shell, we prepared a silicate plate/polymer nanocomposite by infiltrating PMMA between silicate layers and warm-pressing them at $200^{\circ}C$ for 1 h under 15 tons to make organic-inorganic composite materials. To examine the organic-inorganic composite materials after the warm-pressing procedure, the composite sample was analyzed with FE-SEM and TG. The bending strengths and densities of the composites prepared by a silicate plate and PMMA after the warm-pressing process were ~140 MPa and 1.5, respectively.

  • A material mixing method to obtain an optimal topology for a structure in a thermal environment was suggested. This method is based on Evolutionary Structural Optimization(ESO). The proposed material mixing method extends the ESO method to a mixing several materials for a structure in the multicriteria optimization of thermal flux and thermal stress. To do this, the multiobjective optimization technique was implemented. The overall efficiency of material usage was measured in terms of the combination of thermal stress levels and heat flux densities by using a combination strategy with weighting factors. Also, a smoothing scheme was implemented to suppress the checkerboard pattern in the procedure of topology optimization. It is concluded that ESO method with a smoothing scheme is effectively applied to topology optimization. Optimal topologies having multiple thermal criteria for a printed circuit board(PCB) substrate were presented to illustrate validity of the suggested material mixing method. It was found that the suggested method works very well for the multicriteria topology optimization.

  • In this work, an analytical formulation based on both hyperbolic shear deformation theory and stress function, is presented to study the nonlinear post-buckling response of symmetric functionally graded plates supported by elastic foundations and subjected to in-plane compressive, thermal and thermo-mechanical loads. Elastic properties of material are based on sigmoid power law and varying across the thickness of the plate (S-FGM). In the present formulation, Von Karman nonlinearity and initial geometrical imperfection of plate are also taken into account. By utilizing Galerkin procedure, closed-form expressions of buckling loads and post-buckling equilibrium paths for simply supported plates are obtained. The effects of different parameters such as material and geometrical characteristics, temperature, boundary conditions, foundation stiffness and imperfection on the mechanical and thermal buckling and post-buckling loading capacity of the S-FGM plates are investigated.

  • In this work, the dynamic properties of a high performance concrete containing glass powder (GP) was studied. The GP is a new cementitious material obtained by recycling waste glass presenting pozzolanic activity. This eco-friendly material was incorporated in concrete mixes by replacing 20 and 30% of cement. The mechanical properties of building materials highly affect the response of the structure under dynamic actions. First, the resonant vibration frequencies were measured on concrete plate with free boundary conditions after 14, 28 and 90 curing days by using an alternative vibration monitoring technique. This technique measures the average frequencies of several excitations done at different points of the plate. This approach takes into account the heterogeneity of a material like concrete. So, the results should be more precise and reliable. For measuring the bending and torsion resonant frequencies, as well as the damping ratio. The dynamic properties of material such as dynamic elastic modulus and dynamic shear modulus were determined by modelling the plate on the finite element software ANSYS. Also, the instantaneous aroused frequency method and ultrasound method were used to determine the dynamic elastic modulus for comparison purpose, with the results obtained from vibration monitoring technique.

  • An impedance properties of the positive active material Li(Cr$_{0.4}$Mn$_{0.6}$)O$_2$ are measured by the changeable trend to the time. The charge-discharge capacities of 297 mAh(g)$^{-1}$ 175 mAh(g)$^{-1}$ are obtained by the made cell with the active material that the Cr was added to LiMnO$_2$ to prevent structural degradation of an electrode active material with impedance of 75 Ω to get at an initial hour. Resultantly, these variations which the impedances enhanced continually, were not watched the impeditive variations as the results of the delay time that the positive thin films and the references have been soaked all together in the solution of electrolyte of 1M LiPF$_{6}$ EC/DEC(l/2). Accordingly, it means an amount increased of the discharged capacities in the view of the results that the impeditive values were decreased are known already through a authorized paper.per.

  • This study aimed to presents a simple analytical approach to investigate the thermal buckling behavior of thick functionally graded sandwich by employing both the sinusoidal shear deformation theory and stress function. The material properties of the sandwich plate faces are continuously varied within the plate thickness according to a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The core layer is still homogeneous and made of an isotropic material. The thermal loads are considered as uniform, linear and non-linear temperature rises across the thickness direction. Numerical examples are presented to prove the effect of power law index, loading type and functionally graded layers thickness on the thermal buckling response of thick functionally graded sandwich.

  • This paper presents the convected material frame approach to study the nonlinear behavior of inelastic frame structures. The convected material frame approach is a modification of the co-rotational approximation by incorporating an adaptive convected material frame in the basic definition of the displacement vector and strain tensor. In the formulation, each discrete element is associated with a local coordinate system that rotates and translates with the element. For each load increment, the corresponding strain-displacement and nodal force-stress relationships are defined in the updated local coordinates, and based on the updated element geometry. The rigid body motion and deformation displacements are decoupled for each increment. This modified approach incorporates the geometrical nonlinearities through the continuous updating of the material frame geometry. A generalized nonlinear function is used to derive the inelastic constitutive relation and the kinematic hardening is considered. The equation of motion is integrated by an explicit procedure and it involves only vector assemblage and vector storage in the analysis by assuming a lumped mass matrix of diagonal form. Several numerical examples are demonstrated in close agreement with the solutions obtained by the ANSYS code. Numerical studies show that the proposed approach is capable of investigating large deflection of inelastic planar structures and providing an excellent numerical performance.
