  • Wind loads and environments in realistic situations surrounded by neighboring buildings may be considerably different from those in idealized or simplified situations such as codes and standards. Interference effects of change in wind passage of a building group on wind loads and wind environments are reviewed. Wind-induced interference effects depend mainly on the building geometry and arrangement of these structures, their orientation and upstream terrain conditions. The most important factor among them may be the arrangement of building structures which can change the wind direction directly. Interference effects regarding wind loads are discussed with examples of window damages by typhoon and of pressure measurements in the boundary layer wind tunnel. Wind environment problems are also discussed, specially underlined on pedestrian comfort and safety. Various evaluation techniques or standards of wind environment are introduced. The change of wind velocity between the panel-type apartment buildings is examined, depending on the distance each other.

  • The natural frequency of a laminated cantilever microbeam was studied in the present investigation. The microbeam was made of quartz on a silicon chip, and its top and bottom surfaces were coated with thin(~30nm) gold films. An ultrasonic testing platform was employed to resonate the microbeam, and its time domain signal was optically measured. The natural frequency was quantified through the fast Fourier transform of the waveform, and the result showed good agreement with a theoretical estimation from the classical beam theory. This study is expected to provide a dynamic evaluation technique for micro/nanoscale materials and micromechanical structures.

  • The probabilistic seismic safety assessment is one of the methodology to evaluate the seismic safety of the nuclear power plants. The site characteristics of the nuclear power plant should be reflected when evaluating the seismic safety of the nuclear power plant. The Korea seismic characteristics are strong in high frequency region and may be different from NRC Regulatory Guide 1.60, which is the design spectrum of nuclear power plants. In this study, seismic response of a nuclear power plant structure by Pohang earthquake (2017.11.15. (KST)) is investigated. The Pohang earthquake measured at the Cheongsong seismic observation station (CHS) is scaled to the peak ground acceleration (PGA) of 0.2 g and the seismic acceleration time history curve corresponding to the design spectrum is created. A nuclear power plant of the containment building and the auxiliary buildings are modeled using OPENSEES to analyze the seismic response of the Pohang earthquake. The seismic behavior of the nuclear power plant due to the Pohang earthquake is investigated. And the seismic performances of the equipment of a nuclear power plant are evaluated by the HCLPF. As a result, the seismic safety evaluation of nuclear power plants should be evaluated based on site-specific characteristics of nuclear power plants.

  • In this study, the flexural strength and curvature ductility factor of single and hybrid fiber reinforced ultra high strength concrete flexural members with conventional steel rebar were evaluated by experimental program with 3-UHSC beams. Test specimens were loaded by 4-pointed flexural loading. According to the test results, hybrid fiber reinforced UHPC test specimens had higher moment resisting capacity and ductility. For the safe design of hybrid fiber reinforced UHPC, test specimens were analyzed according to the sectional analysis method with material models suggested by K-UHPC design recommendation. Current K-UHPC design recommendation predict the moment resisting capacity of member conventionally and over-estimated the ductility.

  • The proposed hybrid damper installs at a coupling beam and consists of a high-damping rubber (HDR) and steel pin. The proposed hybrid damper adopted a pin-lock system acts as a viscoelastic damper under wind load (small displacement) while it behaves as a hysteretic damper under earthquake load (large displacement). In this paper, the pin-lock mechanism and structural performance of the proposed hybrid damper is evaluated through experiment. Experiments were carried out with the variables which displacement, loading frequency and steel pin quantities were used. Test results showed that the pin-lock mechanism and the performance of the hybrid damper under a large displacement were verified. Also equivalent damping ratios of HDR were increasing at a small displacement as displacement amplitudes were increasing. However HDR did not depend on frequency.

  • Researchers have been long studying new building implementation methods to improve the quality of construction, reduce the time of assembly, and increase productivity. One of these methods is the use of modular pre-fabricated structural forms that are composed of a beam, column, short column, pyramidal end block, and connection plates. In this study, a new geometry for the pyramidal end block was proposed that helps facilitate the assembly procedure. Since the proposed configuration affects the performance of this form of connection, its behavior was evaluated using finite element method. For this purpose, the connection was modeled in ABAQUS and then validated by comparing the outputs with experimental results. The research proceeded through analyzing 16 specimens under monotonic and cyclic loading. The results indicated that using the pyramidal end block not only makes the assembly process easier but also reduces the out-of-plane displacement of the short column webs and the vertical displacement of beam end. By choosing appropriate section properties for column and beam, the connection can bear a rotation up to 0.01 radians within its inelastic region and a total of 0.04 radians without any significant reduction in its bearing capacity.

  • Traceability establishment in chemical measurements is a like a linkage established through an unbroken chain from the measured results to the international system (SI) of units. The primary process for traceability establishment is the purity assignment of a target material to be measured. In this study, we studied the purity assignment of 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OHP). The presence of 17-OHP is indicative of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) and it builds up due to the deficiency of 21-hydroxylase and 11β-hydroxylase enzyme in the human blood. The purity assignment of 17-OHP was performed by the mass balance method, in which the impurities are categorized into four classes: total related structural impurities, water, residual organic solvents, and nonvolatiles/inorganics. The total related structural impurities were characterized by HPLC-UV; water content was determined by Karl-Fisher coulometer; and the total residual solvents and nonvolatiles/inorganics were determined by TGA. The purity of 17-OHP from a commercial manufacturer was calculated as 993.30 mg/g, and the expanded uncertainty was 0.58 mg/g. The proposed method was validated by uncertainty evaluation and comparing with the actual value of purity.

  • Recently, new keywords such as "Resilience" and "Repairability" have been discussed from the perspective of the sustainability of damaged structures after a severe disaster. To evaluate the repairability and recovery of structures, it is necessary to establish an analytical method that can simulate the behavior of repaired structures. Furthermore, it is desirable to establish an evaluation method for the structural performance of repaired structures. This study investigates the repairability and recovery of steel members that are damaged by local buckling or cracks. This paper suggests a simple analytical model for repaired steel members, in order to simulate the inelastic behavior and evaluate the recoverability of the structural performance. There is good agreement between the analytical results and the test results. The proposed analytical method and model can effectively evaluate the recoverability.

  • In order to evaluate the cryogenic fracture characteristics of structural steels for superconducting magnets of fusion reactor, small punch (SP) testing was performed on austenitic stainless steel (JN1 base metal) and its TIG weldments at 293K, 77K and 4K. The mechanical properties with respect to the extracted location of the weld metal, on the effects of welding heat cycle about base metal near fusion line in TIG weldments were investigated. The mechanical property of the weld metal in TIG weldments depends on distance from welding root, root region of weldments having the lowest mechanical property. The base metal near fusion line showed degradation of mechanical property caused by cyclic heating during the TIG welding. Based on the test results, HAZ was found to be up to 5mm from the fusion line. It is shown that SP testing is a useful tool to evaluate the mechanical properties with respect to the microstructures changes such as HAZ as well as weld metal in TIG weldments at cryogenic temperature.

  • This research was designed to compare the subjective evaluation of texture image and preference between offline and online by structural characteristics of women' jacket fabrics for spring and summer. 78 participants evaluated the sensibility image and preference of various fabrics. The data were analysed by factor analysis, t-test, Pearson's productive correlation, regression, and multi dimensional scale. The results were as follows: Sensibility image factors of women' jacket fabrics were 'classic' 'sophisticated' 'natural' 'characteristic' and 'practical'. Between offline and online, sensibility images showed no differences. In sensibility images, 'classic'-'sophisticated', 'natural'-'practical', and 'practical'-'characteristic' images showed significant correlation. By analyzing the contribution of fabric structure on sensibility images, density affected on the 'classic' image offline and online. By the results of regression analysis, thickness, density and weave affected on the tactile preference. In sensibility images, 'classic', 'sophisticated' 'characteristic' images were the influencing factor. 'Sophisticated', 'natural', 'characteristic' and 'practical' images affected on the purchase preference.
