  • Hardening of 2 component adhesive such as epoxy resin used in saturating FRP composite is triggered by mixing each component part within a batch. Chemical reactions occur explosively after a certain time after mixing the batch, viscosity and temperature rapidly increase. As a results, bond performance remarkably decreases and workability declines due to increase in viscosity. Therefore, adhesion should be completed before chemical hardening reaction is rapidly going on. This study examined pot life of structural adhesive for FRP composites by means of change in apparent viscosity and means of exothermic reaction temperature proposing in existing test standards. Result of each test method was compared and analyzed, and reasonable test method and evaluation method are suggested.

  • This paper presents a foundation pile to steel column connection that can resist large magnitude of moment and that can be easy installed. The developed joint has spherical shape and it is given the name HAT joint to mean Hallow half-sphere steel joint. Four types of HAT joints are developed. Namely, H-type, T-type, P-type and K-type. In this paper I will talk about the performance assessment of T-type(Tube Column) and P-type(Pile Column) of HAT joints with finite element analysis and experiment on a full scale model is presented.

  • Recently, the Belite cement having the high fluidity, high strength, and low heat properties, was developed, and is being promoted the efforts for application on the real structures. Accordingly, for the purpose of practical use of high strength concrete using the Belite cement, was carried out the performance evaluation experiments about the structural members(column, beam, column-beam joint, steel bond strength etc.). Specimens were made in three types of concrete(Belite:350, 600kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, OPC:350kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$) by taking into account the key parameters. In this paper, were summarized the comparative experimental results on the material properties and structural performance of Belite concrete.

  • As a part of rapid construction technology of bridge pier caps, controversial issues for design and construction of precast pier caps were discussed. Three kinds of approaches of rapid bridge pier cap construction were proposed and discussed. Especially for an approach of precast shell type structures, experimental studies were performed to evaluate structural performance and compared with conventionally constructed reinforced concrete pier cap.

  • An experimental study to evaluate structural capacity of an embedded plate connected with prestressed concrete beam was performed. Embedded steel plates and prestressed concrete beam were connected with stud-bolts at the ends of concrete beam specimens. About 1,000 kN concentrated load was applied at 450mm away from the end of beam specimen. A 3,000 kN capacity static Oil-jack was used to direct concentrated load. The maximum strain of stud-bolt recorded $90{\times}10^{-6}$(mm/mm) and wide width cracks were not founded. Any falling failures of concrete and large deformations were not founded either between steel plate and prestressed concrete specimen. As a result, construction performance can be improved using this embedded steel plate connection system apply to large space educational facilities.

  • Evaluation of the structural analysis for a 70/15 ton${\times}$105 m LLC (Level Luffing Crane) was conducted with an FEM Tool. Due to a discordance of the modeling and element type, the LLC was progressively analyzed after dividing it into the boom, main structure and rocker. All loads such as slewing, traveling and wind load, etc., that are indicated in the reference standards, were inputted as various severe conditions of the LLC. The deformation, equivalent stress(Von Mises stress), buckling characteristics were evaluated for the LLC structures. The stress concentrated areas over the allowable stress were identified, and reinforcement work was performed with a stiffener.

  • In this paper, static analysis of eddy current brake′s frame, which is one of key structural components of brake system for high speed train, was performed in order to evaluate the design by computer simulation. Calculation was carried out in general for the driving modes "braking" and "frame in upper position(brakes inactive)". Several yield stress load cases and fatigue load cases were analysed fur each of the driving modes. (omitted)

  • Estimation of geotechnical properties is an essential but challenging task since they are major components governing the safety and reliability of the entire structural system. However, due to time and budget constraints, reliable geotechnical properties estimation using traditional site characterization approach is difficult. In view of this, an alternative efficient and cost effective approach to address the overall uncertainty is necessary to facilitate an economical, safe and reliable geotechnical design. In this paper a probabilistic approach is proposed for real-time updating by incorporating new geotechnical information from the underlying project site. The updated model obtained from the proposed method is advantageous because it incorporates information from both existing database and the site of concern. An application using real data from a site in Hong Kong will be presented to demonstrate the proposed method.

  • In this study seismic analyses of steel structures were carried out to examine the effect of ground motion characteristics and structural properties on energy demands using 100 earthquake ground motions recorded in different soil conditions, and the results were compared with those of previous works. Analysis results show that ductility ratios and the site conditions have significant influence on input energy. The ratio of hysteretic to input energy is considerably influenced by the ductility ratio and the strong motion duration. It is also observed that as the predominant periods of the input energy spectra are significantly larger than those of acceleration response spectra used in the strength design, the strength demand on a structure designed based on energy should be checked especially in short period structures. For that reason framed structures with buckling-restrained-braces (BRBs) were designed in such a way that all the input energy was dissipated by the hysteretic energy of the BRBs, and the results were compared with those designed by conventional strength-based design procedure.
